Chapter 5

Devon's face filled my laptop screen at nine PM. Behind him, I could see the tactical operations center—screens, maps, people moving with purpose.

"We're coordinated with the U.S. Attorney's office and the FBI Financial Crimes Unit," he said. His voice was steady. Professional. "The warrant came through an hour ago. We have authorization for full tactical entry."

I nodded. Took notes I didn't need. I'd memorized every detail already.

"Three entry points," Devon continued. "Front entrance, beach access, and the service entrance on the north side. We breach simultaneously at twenty-one hundred hours. You'll be clear of the structure by then."

"Understood."

"Lauren." He stopped. "You don't have to go in first. You can wait outside. Let the team handle—"

"No." My voice was quiet. "I walk in that door. I show them my badge. I say the words. That's how this ends."

He studied me through the screen. I could see him weighing it. Calculating.

"All right," he said finally. "But the moment things escalate, you step back. Let the team do their job."

"I will."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Be careful," he said.

I almost smiled. "I'm always careful."

"I know." His expression didn't change. "I'm saying it anyway."

Something shifted in my chest. I looked at him—really looked at him. Five years of encrypted calls. Five years of him being the only person who knew both versions of me. The only person who'd ever asked if I was okay and meant it.

"Devon—"

"Don't." He shook his head. "Not yet. When this is over. When you're out." A beat. "Then we'll talk."

I nodded. Couldn't trust my voice.

"Sunday," he said. "Twenty-one hundred hours."

"I'll be ready."

The screen went dark.

I sat there in the kitchen for a long time after. The penthouse was silent. Damien was at Kira's apartment. He'd stopped pretending to come home most nights.

My phone buzzed at ten-thirty.

A message from an unknown number. I opened it.

A photograph loaded slowly. The Hamptons villa. Kira and Damien on the terrace, champagne glasses raised, golden hour light making everything look warm and perfect. Kira's head on his shoulder. His arm around her waist.

Below the image: *Don't wait up.*

I stared at it. Took a screenshot. Added it to the evidence file. Case number HV-2847, Exhibit 294. Digital provocation demonstrating ongoing emotional abuse and conspiracy to defraud.

Then I deleted the message and set down my phone.

Midnight came. I made tea I didn't drink. Opened my laptop one last time.

The case file filled the screen. Five years of my life, reduced to folders and timestamps and exhibits. I scrolled through slowly.

Exhibit 12: Audio recording, Damien and Kira, October 14th. "The maid he married."

Exhibit 47: Surveillance footage, Damien and Whitney, forged loan documents.

Exhibit 103: Wire transfer records, shell company to offshore account, $340,000.

Exhibit 158: Text message from Kira Moreno, photograph of herself in marital bed.

Exhibit 220: Phone call transcript, Whitney Patterson discussing 'making the bitch disappear.'

I read every label. Every date. Every carefully documented piece of the cage they'd built.

Then I closed the file.

Lauren Cunningham had done her job. This was the last night she'd ever exist.

I didn't sleep. At five AM, I laced my running shoes in the dark and left the penthouse. The streets were empty. Cold. I ran my six miles along the river, watching the sky turn from black to gray to pale blue.

When I got back, I showered for a long time. Let the hot water run until the mirror fogged completely.

I dried off. Walked to the guest bedroom closet. Reached past the winter coats.

The black suit was exactly where I'd left it six months ago. Tailored. Professional. The suit of a woman who commanded rooms and didn't apologize for it.

I laid it on the bed. Dressed slowly. Buttoned the jacket. Checked the mirror.

The woman looking back at me wasn't the one Damien knew. Wasn't the one Whitney had spent five years trying to break.

She was the woman I'd been before. The woman I'd never stopped being.

I opened the desk drawer. Pulled out the leather credentials case I'd kept hidden under a stack of old magazines.

Inside: my Interpol badge. My federal ID. My name—my real name—embossed in silver.

Lauren Warren, Criminal Intelligence Officer.

I clipped the case to my belt. Picked up my keys.

My phone buzzed. Another message from the unknown number.

Another photograph. Kira and Damien. Morning light. Champagne already open. The caption: *Party starts at eight. You're not invited.*

I screenshot it. Added it to the file. Closed my phone.

Then I walked out of the penthouse.

I drove myself to the Hamptons. Two hours on empty highways. No music. Just silence and the sound of my own breathing.

When I pulled up to the villa, cars already lined the circular drive. Valets in white jackets. String lights wrapped around the palm trees. Laughter floating from the terrace.

I parked at the far end. Sat in the car for thirty seconds.

Then I checked my credentials one more time.

Everything was in order.

Everything had always been in order.

I got out of the car and walked toward the villa alone.
