Chapter 3

I laced my running shoes in the dark.

Five AM. The city was still half-asleep, streetlights casting long shadows across empty sidewalks. I slipped out of the penthouse without turning on any lights. Damien wouldn't wake for another three hours. He never did.

The elevator descended in silence. Eighteen floors. I counted every one.

Outside, the air was sharp and clean. October in Manhattan. I turned east toward the river and started running.

This was mine. The only hour of the day that belonged to me. Six miles every morning, the same route I'd run for five years. Past the shuttered boutiques on Madison. Through the park where the early dog walkers nodded without really seeing me. Along the river path where the water caught the first gray light of dawn.

No one knew who I was out here. Not Damien's overlooked wife. Not Whitney's disappointing daughter-in-law. Not even the federal agent I'd been before I erased her.

Just a woman running.

I pushed harder as I hit the third mile. My lungs burned. My legs ached. Good. Pain was honest. Pain didn't lie or manipulate or forge signatures on loan documents.

A newsstand was opening on the corner of Seventy-Second. The owner was cutting the plastic wrap off stacks of papers. I slowed to a walk, catching my breath, and glanced at the headlines.

*Alpine Summit Club Announces Annual Charity Gala*

There was a photo. Damien in a tuxedo, shaking hands with someone I recognized from my files—Marcus Chen, a tech executive with three shell companies in the Caymans. Behind them, a woman in diamonds whose husband ran a hedge fund that had been flagged by the SEC twice. To the right, partially cropped out of frame, a man whose diplomatic passport had gotten him out of two customs inspections in the past year.

The article called it a philanthropic event. A gathering of Manhattan's elite to benefit underprivileged youth.

I'd seen the real guest list. Devon had pulled it from intercepted communications three weeks ago. Seventeen names on that list matched our target database. Five were under active investigation. Two had outstanding Interpol warrants they didn't know about yet.

I committed three new names to memory and kept walking.

By the time I got back to the penthouse, the sun was up. Damien's bedroom door was still closed. I showered quickly, dressed in the kind of clothes he never noticed—jeans, a plain sweater—and opened my laptop at the kitchen table.

The financial architecture file had taken me four years to build.

Fourteen shell companies. I'd traced every one. Damien thought he was clever, layering the transactions through offshore accounts and using different law firms to file the incorporation papers. But he'd made mistakes. Small ones. The kind you make when you've never been caught before.

Company Seven and Company Eleven had the same registered agent in Delaware. Different names on the paperwork, but the email address was identical—a careless copy-paste error someone made at two in the morning.

Company Three's wire transfers always happened on Thursdays. Always between two and four PM. I'd cross-referenced the timestamps with Damien's calendar. Every Thursday he had a 'standing meeting' that wasn't on his work schedule.

Company Twelve had my forged signature on the authorization documents. I'd found the original in Whitney's desk last year, hidden in a file labeled 'Estate Planning.' My handwriting, but not my hand. The pressure points were wrong. The pen had been held at a different angle. A forensic document examiner would spot it in thirty seconds.

I had them all now. The complete map.

$4.2 million in hidden assets. Enough to fund Damien's operation for another three years. Enough to make the case not just solid but devastating.

And $2.8 million in fraudulent debt, carefully constructed over eighteen months, all of it designed to bury me.

I encrypted the file and sent it to Devon.

His response came back fast.

*This is airtight. Come home.*

I stared at the words on the screen. Come home. Like there was a place waiting for me that wasn't this penthouse or a mission or a role I'd been playing so long I sometimes forgot where it ended.

I typed back: *Not yet. Whitney is about to make her final move.*

Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.

*Lauren.*

Just my name. But I heard everything he wasn't saying.

*Two weeks,* I typed. *Maybe less. I need the debt transfer documents to be executed. Once they file them, we have conspiracy in writing. Signed. Dated. Notarized. No way out.*

Another long pause.

*You're sure?*

I looked around the kitchen. The marble counters I cleaned every day. The espresso machine I'd learned to operate because Damien liked his coffee a specific way. The refrigerator full of food I'd bought and prepared and served to a man who never once said thank you.

Five years of this.

I was sure.

*Yes,* I sent back.

*Then I'll have the tactical team on standby. The moment you give the signal, we move.*

I closed the laptop as I heard Damien's bedroom door open down the hall.

Showtime.
