Chapter 3

I came back to myself in pieces.

First the light—too white, too steady. Then the smell, antiseptic and recycled air. Then the pain, which was not one thing but many things happening at once: a deep grinding pressure in my hip, a tightness across my ribs that made every breath a negotiation, and my wrist, wrapped and elevated, throbbing with its own separate, insistent pulse.

I lay still and looked at the ceiling and took inventory.

Fractured pelvis. Cracked ribs. Broken wrist. The nurse had said it quietly, reading from a chart, like she was listing items on a grocery receipt. Deep facial contusions. Possible concussion. They wanted to keep me for observation.

I didn't ask who had reported the accident. I already knew no one had seen anything. That's how private garages work. That's how Sarahi Mendez worked.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist—the old habit, reaching for the necklace clasp—and found only the edge of the bandage.

The door opened at eleven-fifteen. I know because I had been watching the clock above the door for an hour, giving myself something to track.

Greyson walked in alone. No flowers. No coat off, no chair pulled close. He stood at the foot of the bed in his work clothes, a folder in one hand, and looked at me the way you look at a problem that has become inconvenient.

'You need to sign something,' he said.

I looked at him.

He opened the folder and set it on the edge of the mattress. A notarized statement. I could read the first line from where I lay: *I, Ashlyn Foster Hart, retract all statements made on or after—*

'No,' I said.

His expression didn't change. He reached out and picked up my injured wrist.

I had time to understand what he was going to do. That was the worst part. I had a full second of understanding before he did it—his grip shifting, fingers finding the fracture site with a precision that suggested he had thought about this—and then he twisted.

The sound I made was not a scream. It was smaller than that. It came out of me before I could stop it, shapeless and animal, and then I pressed my lips together and stared at the ceiling and breathed.

He set my wrist back down on the mattress.

He placed the pen in my other hand.

I signed. My handwriting looked like someone else's.

He took the folder. He left the copy on the bedside table. He did not look at my face once.

The door swung shut behind him. I listened to his footsteps move down the hall, even and unhurried, until I couldn't hear them anymore.

Then I turned my face toward the window and watched the dark outside until the painkillers pulled me under.

---

They came at two in the morning.

I heard them before I saw them—the soft squeak of rubber soles, the particular quiet of people trying to move without sound. The room was dim. I had one second to think *nurses don't move like that* before one of them yanked the IV line from my arm.

I didn't fight. I want to say I fought. But my pelvis was fractured and my wrist was freshly broken and there were two of them, and the most honest thing I can tell you is that I went still the way prey goes still—not from surrender but from the cold, clear understanding that struggle would only cost me more.

The van smelled like motor oil and cigarettes. I lay on the metal floor and watched the city lights move across the ceiling panels as we drove. I counted the turns. I don't know why. Some part of me was still taking inventory, still insisting on tracking things.

The warehouse in Brooklyn was cold. The floor was concrete. They were methodical—that's the word that kept arriving in my head, methodical, like they had done this before or had been told exactly what to do. Face. Ribs. My wrist, which I stopped being able to feel after the second time.

And then the photographs.

I won't describe them. I will only say that I looked at the wall while it happened and I thought about my mother's hands fastening the necklace at the back of my neck. I thought about the weight of the pearls. I held onto that and I did not look at the camera.

They left me on the hospital steps at five-forty-seven in the morning. I know the time because a maintenance worker found me and his watch was at eye level when he crouched down.

He asked me what happened.

'I fell,' I said.

He didn't believe me. He called for help anyway.

I lay on the cold steps and looked up at the sky, which was just starting to go gray at the edges, and I thought: *This is what the bottom feels like.*

And then, beneath that, quieter: *Remember this. Remember exactly this.*

Because I was already deciding something. I didn't have the shape of it yet. But it was there—small and hard and absolutely certain, the one thing in my body that hadn't broken.

I pressed my thumb against the bandage on my wrist and held on.
