Chapter 4

He told me on a Tuesday.

I was sitting on the edge of the bed in the penthouse guest room—he'd moved me there after the hospital, some calculation I didn't try to understand—when he appeared in the doorway with his phone in his hand and that particular expression he wore when he'd already decided something and was only bothering to inform me as a formality.

'Sarahi's production starts Thursday,' he said. 'You're doing stunt work.'

I looked at him.

'Your accounts stay frozen until the film wraps. Try to leave the city and I'll have the penthouse locks changed by morning.' A pause. 'You don't have anywhere else to go, Ashlyn. We both know that.'

He was right. That was the thing about Greyson—he was often right about the mechanics of a situation. He understood leverage the way other people understood weather. Just a fact of the environment.

'Fine,' I said.

He left. I pressed my thumb against the bandage on my wrist and stared at the wall and thought.

I thought for a long time.

Then I went to the drawer where I kept a small emergency kit—the kind of preparedness that had become instinct after three years of this marriage—and I found what I was looking for. A coin-sized camera. The kind you could order online for sixty dollars. I'd bought it eight months ago and never used it.

I held it in my palm.

*Remember this. Remember exactly this.*

Thursday came.

---

The production was shooting at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn. Period drama—nineteenth century, corsets and cobblestones and men on horses. The costume department was housed in a long trailer, racks of heavy fabric running wall to wall.

I arrived early. The costume supervisor handed me a dress without looking at my face—thin muslin, period-accurate, the kind of fabric that breathed. The kind that wouldn't protect anything.

I found a spot at the back of the rack. A seam in the fabric lining, low and unremarkable. I pressed the camera in and smoothed the cloth over it. The lens faced out toward the set floor.

Then I put on the dress and went to work.

---

The whipping sequence was scheduled for the afternoon.

I stood on the mark and looked at the lights and didn't let myself think about what was coming. The props department had a rubber practice whip on the table—standard, sensible, the kind used on every production I'd ever heard of.

Sarahi came onto the set at two o'clock. She was in her own costume, elaborate and perfect, her hair pinned up under a velvet hat. She walked the length of the props table and stopped at the whip. Picked it up. Turned it over.

'This is rubber,' she said.

The props coordinator nodded. 'Standard for impact scenes—'

'I want the real one.' She set it down gently. 'Cowhide. For period authenticity. The sound is completely different on camera.' She smiled at the director. 'You'll see it in the footage. It matters.'

The director looked at his hands. He looked at the producer. He looked at nobody in particular for a moment.

'Get the cowhide,' he said.

I stood on my mark and breathed.

The first take, the whip opened a line across my shoulder blades. I felt it as heat first, then as something sharper. I kept my face forward. The scene called for a reaction—I gave them one, controlled, what the script required.

'Again,' Sarahi said from her monitor chair. She had iced coffee. She stirred it slowly. 'The pacing was off.'

Seven takes. That's what it cost her to be satisfied with the pacing.

By the fourth, the muslin was sticking to my back. By the sixth, I had stopped feeling individual strikes and started feeling one continuous thing, low and total, like weather inside my own body.

Seventh take. The director called cut.

I stood still for a moment. Then I walked off the mark and found a wall to put my back against—carefully, not touching it—and I breathed.

---

She waited twenty minutes. Let me think it was over.

Then she called for the crew member who handled continuity. A young man, early twenties, who had been avoiding eye contact with me all day.

'Her hair,' Sarahi said. She was looking at me, not at him. 'The character wouldn't have long hair at this point in the narrative. Cut it.'

He blinked. 'We can pin it under—'

'Cut it.' Her voice stayed soft. She touched the back of her own neck, demonstrating. 'Here. Short. It's a story choice.'

He looked at me. I looked back at him and I saw it—the moment he calculated Greyson's name against his own rent, his own career, his own morning commute.

He picked up the shears.

I found a point on the far wall. A rivet in a steel beam, about eight feet up. I fixed my eyes on it.

The first cut was at the nape of my neck. I felt the weight go. Then another. And another. Dark ribbons fell past my face to the studio floor, one after another, landing without sound on the concrete.

I did not look down at them.

I kept my eyes on the rivet.

I kept my eyes on the rivet.

I kept my eyes on the rivet.

Sarahi set down her iced coffee and said, 'Better.'

And somewhere behind me, in the seam of a costume rack, a small lens recorded everything.
