Chapter 4

On Tuesday morning, Dante’s corporate PR team drafted the public statement.

I sat at the mahogany table in our penthouse study and watched the cursor blink on the laptop screen. The draft called the poisoning incident an "unfortunate domestic misunderstanding." It had my signature typed at the bottom.

"Just say you had a severe migraine and accidentally tipped the soup bowl over," the PR director told me over speakerphone. His voice was polite and careful. He had no idea what had actually happened. He only took orders from Dante.

"That works," I said quietly. "Send it out."

By noon, the society columns had their story. *Page Six* ran a glossy color photo of Rosalia sitting at my breakfast island. She wore a cream silk robe and held my favorite gold-rimmed teacup. The headline stretched across the top in bold black letters: *A New Chapter for the Bishop Family.*

The article called Rosalia a "longtime European muse" and introduced Enzo as the "promising young heir to the Bishop empire."

My phone buzzed constantly with texts from charity board members and old business friends. They asked careful, probing questions.

*Emmeline, are you alright?*

*Is everything okay with Dante?*

I didn't answer a single text. I let the world believe I was beaten. A humiliated wife, clinging to her husband's fortune because she had nowhere else to go.

That Saturday, we drove out to Long Island for the annual Southampton Hospital Charity Gala.

The salt air off the Atlantic was cold and sharp. The gravel driveway of the estate was lined with black luxury cars and bright flashing cameras.

Dante stepped out of our town car first. He adjusted his tuxedo jacket, smoothed his tie, and flashed his familiar, practiced smile for the press. Then Rosalia stepped out. She wore an emerald silk gown that left her shoulders bare, showing off a heavy diamond necklace Dante had bought her.

I stepped out last, dressed in a simple navy blue gown.

I had spent twenty minutes in front of the mirror applying heavy foundation over my left cheekbone. Enzo’s hand had left a deep, greenish bruise on my skin, but the thick makeup hid the shadow.

"Smile, Emmeline," Dante muttered under his breath as we walked onto the lawn. "Look like a team."

"Of course," I said softly.

I put on my best society smile. I stood at Dante's right side and let the photographers take dozens of photos.

At one point, a reporter from the *Times* called out to Dante, asking about his sudden family reunion. Dante puffed his chest out. He laughed, looking entirely in his element.

"Family is everything," Dante announced. "We couldn't be happier."

As he spoke, Rosalia stepped closer. She placed her right hand flat against the center of Dante’s chest, right over his lapel. Her long red nails dug into the black wool like claws, marking her territory in front of fifty flashbulbs. She glanced over Dante's shoulder at me and offered a tight, smug little smirk.

Dante didn't push her away. He looked down at her with pride, resting his hand over hers.

I saw the tension leave his jaw. His shoulders dropped. He ordered another scotch from the waiter and chuckled at a bad joke from a real estate developer.

He truly believed he had won. He thought the blow from Enzo and the signed letter of intent had finally broken my spirit.

Men like Dante are the easiest to destroy when they think you’ve surrendered.

We returned to the Manhattan penthouse just past midnight.

The private elevator doors slid open into the dark foyer. Enzo was already asleep in the north wing after spending the night at a club downtown. Rosalia took Dante’s arm, whispering something in his ear, and led him toward the master suite. Her heels clicked softly on the marble floor.

I didn't follow them.

I walked quietly down the hall toward the corner guest room at the far end of the apartment. I had moved my clothes there three days ago.

I stepped inside and locked the door behind me.

I unzipped my gown, let it fall to the floor, and pulled on a cotton t-shirt. In the bathroom, I turned on the faucet and washed the heavy makeup from my face with cold water. The foundation washed away, leaving the dark bruise visible on my pale skin. My jaw still felt sore when I opened my mouth, a dull ache reminding me of Enzo's knuckles.

I dried my face with a towel. Then I opened my evening clutch.

Behind my compact mirror, wrapped in a black cloth, was a cheap plastic burner phone. I had paid twenty dollars in cash for it two days ago at a dingy corner bodega in Midtown.

I turned it on and dialed a private number from memory.

The phone rang three times. Then a gravelly voice answered.

"Speak."

"Marcus," I said. My voice was barely a whisper.

"Emmeline. I was wondering when you'd call."

"I have a job for you," I said. "Three names. Rosalia Ortiz. Enzo Bishop. Dante Bishop."

"Alright. Where do I start?"

"London," I said. "Start with the flat on Kensington High Street where Rosalia lived for the last twenty years. I want bank statements, flight logs, private school records, and clinic files. Check every hospital in that borough around Enzo's birth."

Marcus paused on the line. "What am I looking for?"

"Lies," I answered. "Anything that doesn't line up. Rosalia spent twenty-three years living off my company’s money in the shadows. People who live like that always leave tracks."

"I can be in London by tomorrow afternoon," Marcus said.

"Good," I said. "Find everything. I need it bulletproof."

"You'll have it."

He hung up.

I popped the back off the burner phone, took out the battery, and hid the pieces deep inside the lining of my luggage.

I turned off the bathroom light. The guest room was quiet and cool. Across the corridor, the door to the master bedroom was firmly closed.

I climbed into the guest bed, pulled the blanket up to my shoulders, and closed my eyes.

For the first time in weeks, my chest felt completely calm.
