Chapter 5

Six weeks passed.

I played my part perfectly. I poured coffee, signed harmless memos, and let Rosalia repaint the foyer in gaudy gold trim. I watched Enzo drive his sports car out of my garage every morning. Dante thought he had tamed me. He walked around the penthouse with his chest out, smiling like a king.

Then, Marcus Thorne called.

The package arrived at my private box on Friday morning. It was a thick manila envelope sealed with red tape. I took it into the locked guest bedroom, sat on the edge of the bed, and opened it.

Inside were copies of medical intake logs, birth registries, and adoption files from England.

My eyes scanned the first page. It was a birth certificate from a hospital in Manchester, dated twenty-three years ago. Rosalia Ortiz had given birth to a baby boy.

I turned the page. My breath hitched.

It was an official death certificate.

*Cause of death: Congenital heart failure. Age: Eleven days.*

Dante’s real son had died before he was two weeks old.

I flipped to the next file. It was a set of yellowed transfer papers from a shuttered charity home outside Manchester. Three weeks after the infant died, Rosalia had walked into the orphanage and paid cash to adopt an abandoned baby boy. She named him Enzo.

The boy sleeping down the hall, eating my food and calling Dante "Dad," had no Bishop blood in his veins. He was an orphan Rosalia had bought to keep Dante’s wire transfers coming.

My phone vibrated against the duvet. I answered.

"Did you read it?" Marcus asked. His voice was low and quiet.

"Yes," I said. My fingers held the death certificate so tightly the paper creaked. "The baby died."

"Died in the neonatal unit," Marcus confirmed. "Rosalia panicked. If the baby died, the child support stopped. So she replaced him. But there's a problem, Emmeline."

"What problem?"

"Dante’s attorneys will fight paper evidence in court," Marcus said. "They’ll claim foreign records are forged or misfiled. We need a living witness. Someone who was in the room when Rosalia signed the adoption papers."

"Is there one?"

"The old administrator from the home," Marcus said. "A woman named Margaret Higgins. She’s seventy-two now. I’m tracking her down in northern England."

"Find her," I told him. "Pay whatever it takes. Get her on tape."

"Understood."

I hung up, put the files into my safe, and locked it.

The next morning, Dante stopped me in the hallway. He was adjusting his cufflinks.

"Empty out the desk in the small study," he said without looking at me. "Enzo needs the room for his gaming setup. Throw out the old files."

"All of them?" I asked.

"Anything from before the IPO," he said. "It's junk anyway."

It was a test. He wanted to treat me like a maid to remind me where I stood. I nodded quietly and went into the study.

I pulled open the bottom drawer. It was filled with old utility bills, tax returns, and travel receipts from two decades ago. I began sorting them into a black trash bag.

Near the back of the drawer, tucked behind an old insurance folder, my fingers brushed against a blue cardboard sleeve.

I pulled it out.

It was a surgical consent form from a private clinic in Harley Street, London. The date at the top was nineteen years ago.

*Procedure: Bilateral Vasectomy.*

*Patient: Dante Bishop.*

My eyes dropped to the bottom of the page. Under the section marked *Emergency Contact / Next of Kin*, a familiar name was written in looping cursive:

*Rosalia Ortiz. Relationship: Partner.*

The paper felt ice-cold in my hands.

Nineteen years ago, I was thirty-four years old.

I remembered that year vividly. I had broken down in tears in our old apartment on our tenth anniversary. I had begged Dante to stop using protection. I told him our startup was stable, that we had enough money, that I wanted a baby before it was too late.

He had pulled me onto his lap. He wiped my tears with his thumbs. He kissed my forehead and spoke in that warm, gentle voice he used when he wanted to soothe me.

*Not yet, Em,* he had whispered back then. *The company is just taking off. A baby will slow us down. It’s just you and me against the world, remember? We don’t need anyone else.*

He had already cut his cords.

He had flown to London, let Rosalia sign the paperwork as his partner, and sterilized himself so I could never give him a rival heir. He had looked into my weeping eyes and lied to my face while my biological clock ran out.

I stood in the quiet study for five full minutes. I didn't cry. My hands didn't shake.

I took the form, walked down the long corridor, and stepped into the sunlit breakfast nook.

Dante sat alone at the marble table. He was reading the morning market report on his tablet, a cup of black coffee steaming beside his hand.

I walked up to the table. I laid the blue consent form flat against the marble, right beside his cup.

Dante glanced down. His eyes landed on the clinic logo. He didn't flinch. He didn't drop his tablet. He just took a slow sip of his coffee.

"You went through my things," he said mildly.

"You told me to clean the drawer," I answered. My voice was completely flat. "Nineteen years ago, Dante. I begged you for a child that year."

He set his mug down with a soft click. He looked up at me, his eyes cold and untroubled.

"I did it for the family, Emmeline," he said.

"The family," I repeated.

"Rosalia and Enzo," he said, as if explaining something simple to a child. "I already had a son. A boy who would carry my name. I didn't need another heir complicating the estate."

He picked up his fork and cut into an omelet.

"Besides," Dante added, chewing slowly. "Let’s be honest with each other. You were always married to the company. You spent twelve hours a day at your desk. You never really wanted children anyway."

I looked at his face. The familiar curve of his nose. The dark eyes I had loved since we were ten years old, digging through trash cans behind an Ohio gas station.

He had stolen thirty years of my life. He had stolen my chance to be a mother. And now, he was telling me it was my own fault.

I went very still.

Inside my chest, the last lingering trace of the boy from Ohio died. A heavy iron door swung shut inside me, locking away every scrap of grief, pity, and love.

There was nothing left. Only ice.

"You're right," I said quietly.

I turned around and walked out of the kitchen.

I had a phone call to make. Margaret Higgins was waiting in England, and I was going to buy every word she had to say.
