When My Husband Gave Our Empire to His Secret Son Chapter 1

It was 2:40 in the morning when I found the papers.

I couldn’t sleep. In two weeks, Dante and I were celebrating our thirtieth wedding anniversary. We had met as poor, starving kids in Ohio, collecting scrap metal just to buy bread. Now, we ran one of the biggest tech empires in New York. I wanted to make him a surprise photo album. I needed the old Polaroids from our first winter in the city, when we only had forty dollars and a mattress on the floor.

I went into Dante’s study to look for the photo box. I opened the bottom drawer of his desk, but my hand hit a heavy blue leather binder instead.

I pulled it out and flipped it open.

The top document was a notarized trust deed. It granted twenty percent of our company’s voting shares to someone named Enzo Bishop. The date was four years ago. At the bottom, my name was scrawled on the line, but it wasn't my handwriting. It was a forgery.

Underneath the deed were thick stacks of bank records. Wire transfers. Half a million dollars every year, sent to a private bank account in London.

The transfers went back twenty-three years.

The listed guardian was Rosalia Ortiz.

My heart didn’t race. It just went completely cold, like ice water running through my veins. Rosalia Ortiz had been my bully in college. She was the rich sorority girl who called me "dumpster trash" because of my scholarship. And now, she had been living on my money for over two decades.

I sat in Dante’s leather chair and read every single page. I didn't cry. I didn't gasp. I sat there in the dark for two hours until the grandfather clock in the hallway struck five.

Then, I picked up the folder and walked upstairs to our bedroom.

I pushed the door open and flipped on the bedside lamp. The bright yellow light hit Dante’s face. He groaned, putting an arm over his eyes.

"Emmeline?" he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep. "What time is it? Turn that off."

I dropped the blue folder onto his chest.

It hit him with a heavy thud. Dante blinked, looking at the papers. He recognized the blue leather instantly. His face didn't pale. He didn't jump up or panic. He just sat up against the pillows and rubbed his eyes.

"You went through my desk," he said. His voice was flat.

"Who is Enzo Bishop?" I asked. My voice sounded very calm, almost gentle.

Dante looked down at the forged signature. He didn't deny it. He didn't even flinch.

"He’s my son," he said.

A heavy silence filled the room.

"Twenty-three years," I said softly. "You have a twenty-three-year-old son in London with Rosalia Ortiz."

"Yes."

I looked at him. This was the man who held my hand when we had nothing. The man who looked into my eyes ten years into our marriage and told me we were better off childfree. He said a baby would ruin our startup. He said it was just the two of us against the world.

"When did you decide I was never going to be a mother, Dante?" I asked.

He sighed, sounding annoyed, as if I were a child making a fuss over nothing. "Be reasonable, Emmeline. You were always working. The company needed you. I handled what needed to be handled."

"You stole my shares," I said. "You forged my name."

By six in the morning, the sky outside our penthouse windows turned a dull, dirty gray. Central Park looked dead and cold below us.

Dante got out of bed and put on his silk robe. He stood near the window, adjusting his gold Rolex. He wasn't hiding anymore. His voice turned hard and sharp.

"Here is how this is going to work," he said, turning to face me. "Enzo is twenty-three now. He’s finished his studies in London. He is moving to New York, and Rosalia is coming with him. They are moving into this penthouse."

I stared at him. "Excuse me?"

"It's a modern arrangement," Dante sneered. "You will welcome them. You will show New York that we are united. If you try to fight me, I will file for divorce tomorrow. I'll make it as ugly and public as possible. The press will eat it alive, and the stock will crash fifty percent. You will lose everything you spent your life building."

He took a step toward me. His eyes were cold.

"A company needs an heir, Emmeline. A Bishop boy will take over this company. Accept it."

He had never said the word *heir* to me in thirty years. Not once.

Standing in the gray morning light, I finally understood. Dante hadn't just cheated on me. He had been fighting a quiet, secret war against me for decades. And he truly believed he had already won.

"I see," I said quietly.

I didn't yell. I didn't throw anything. I simply walked out of the bedroom and went straight to my home office down the hall.

On the wall hung a small glass frame. Inside it was a crumpled, faded ten-dollar bill. It was the first ten dollars Dante and I had earned together thirty years ago, collecting aluminum cans in the snow. I had kept it as a reminder of where we came from.

I took the frame off the wall. I popped open the back and pulled the old bill out.

I looked at it for two seconds. Then, I turned on the electric shredder beside my desk and pushed the bill inside.

The machine hummed, slicing the green paper into tiny, useless ribbons.

I didn't shed a single tear.

I straightened the pens on my desk, sat down in my chair, and opened my laptop. Then, I pulled out my phone and dialed my private attorney.

"Victoria," I said when she answered. "It's Emmeline. We need to talk."
