Chapter 3

Two weeks in, the dinner table felt like a morgue.

We had tomato basil soup for the first course. The maid had set the bowls down ten minutes earlier. I barely touched mine. Across from me, Rosalia stirred hers slowly with a silver spoon.

She took three small sips. Then, her spoon clattered against the porcelain rim.

She grabbed the edge of the mahogany table. Her knuckles went stark white.

"Dante..." she wheezed.

Her skin turned a sour, chalky gray. She pushed back her chair and tried to stand, but her knees folded under her. She hit the hardwood floor with a heavy thud, gasping for air. Her fingers clawed at her throat.

"Mom!"

Enzo jumped up so fast his water glass overturned. Ice cubes scattered across the linen cloth. He dropped to his knees beside her. Rosalia was gagging, curling into a tight ball on the Persian rug.

"What did you do?" Enzo snapped. His head jerked up toward me. His eyes were wide and bloodshot. "What did you put in her bowl?"

"I didn't touch her food," I said evenly.

I stood up and reached into my skirt pocket for my phone. "I'm calling an ambulance."

"You poisoned her, you bitch!" Enzo roared.

He surged forward before I could even unlock the screen. His heavy hands slammed into my shoulders. The force threw me backward. My lower back crashed hard against the marble edge of the console table, sending a crystal vase shivering.

Pain shot up my spine. Before I could catch my breath, his open hand struck across my face.

*Crack.*

The blow whipped my head to the side. The sharp taste of copper filled my mouth. My left ear rang with a high, buzzing whine.

"Enzo!"

Dante’s voice cut through the room.

He walked in from the hallway, sliding his reading glasses into his vest pocket. He took in the scene in two seconds. Rosalia was writhing on the rug, groaning in theatrical agony. Enzo stood over me, chest heaving and fists clenched. I leaned against the console table, blood trickling from the split corner of my lip.

Dante didn't run to Rosalia. He didn't ask if I was hurt.

Instead, he pulled out his gold-cased iPhone and looked at the screen.

"Put your phone away, Emmeline," Dante said. His voice was cold and steady.

"She’s sick, Dante," I said, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. "And your son just assaulted me."

Dante looked at my reddening cheek, then looked back at his screen.

"Enzo is defending his mother," he said coldly. "And if you dial 911, the EMTs bring the police. The police bring reporters. Do you want to see tomorrow's morning headlines?"

He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

"*Billionaire CEO wife attacks husband’s family in jealousy frenzy.* Think about what that does to our stock, Emmeline. It would crash twenty points before the opening bell. You'd wipe out two billion dollars before noon."

On the floor, Rosalia let out another soft, miserable whimper. Enzo knelt back down, stroking her hair.

"Get her into the bathroom," Dante told Enzo casually. "Help her throw it up. She’ll live."

He turned on his heel and walked out. He never looked back once.

***

The next morning, the sky was completely gray. Rain beat against the penthouse windows in heavy, dull sheets.

I sat in my study. My cheekbone was swollen, turning a dark, ugly purple under the skin. My back ached whenever I took a full breath.

Dante walked in at eight. He carried a black leather folder and two mugs of coffee. He set one cup in front of me and sat down in the leather armchair across from my desk.

"How is your face?" he asked. It wasn't a question of concern. It was a check on the damage.

"It hurts," I said.

He opened the folder and slid a crisp white document across the wood.

"We need to settle this quietly," Dante said. "Rosalia spent half the night throwing up. Enzo is furious. He wants to go to the local precinct."

I looked down at the paper. It was a supplementary share transfer agreement. It reassigned an additional ten percent of our company’s voting stock to Enzo Bishop.

"Enzo struck me, Dante," I said quietly. "He threw me into a marble table."

"He reacted to seeing his mother poisoned," Dante said smoothly. He adjusted his heavy gold Rolex. "Let's be *reasonable*, Emmeline. A boy protects his mother. If he files a report, the police will test the soup. There was an emetic in her bowl. You had full access to the kitchen yesterday."

"I didn't put anything in it."

"It doesn't matter what you did," he countered, leaning forward. "What matters is the narrative. If this leaks, the board will call an emergency meeting. They will vote no confidence. You will be pushed out as CEO. Signing this ten percent over to Enzo is the only *reasonable* option. It acts as compensation for the trauma. It keeps the family together."

He leaned back, his eyes narrowing slightly. "I think that's very *reasonable* of me. Don't be unreasonable now."

Four times in ten minutes. *Reasonable.*

I looked at the bold black letters near the top of the page: *Preliminary Letter of Intent.*

It was a letter of intent. A non-binding draft. Under corporate law, it meant absolutely nothing until the formal board resolution was drafted, voted on, and filed with the SEC. Dante was so blinded by his greed that he hadn't even checked the fine print.

"Do you have a pen?" I asked.

Dante’s eyes lit up. He pulled a silver pen from his jacket and handed it over.

I didn't hesitate. I pressed the tip to the signature line and signed my name.

*Emmeline Sanders.*

I capped the pen and pushed the document back across the desk. My face stayed completely blank. No tears. No shaking hands.

"Good girl," Dante murmured, picking up the folder with a satisfied smirk. "I knew you'd see sense."

I picked up my mug and took a slow sip of black coffee. The hot liquid stung the cut inside my mouth, sharp and clean.

He thought he had me cornered. He thought he had won.

He had no idea what was coming.
