Chapter 2

Three days later, the private elevator chimed.

The brass doors slid open, and the foyer filled with luggage. Eleven matching leather suitcases, stacked like a wall. Behind them stood Rosalia Ortiz.

She wore a cream cashmere coat and sunglasses the size of saucers. In her hands, she clutched a heavy velvet jewelry box dripping with gold clasps. She didn’t look fifty. Her skin was pulled tight, and her neck was wrapped in diamonds Dante had paid for.

She walked right past me. Her perfume smelled heavy, like vanilla and spoiled lilies. She didn't say hello. She didn't nod. She just handed her coat to the empty air, expecting someone to take it. It dropped onto the marble floor.

I stayed by the kitchen counter. I didn't move.

I remembered her face from twenty-five years ago at NYU. She had been the sorority president in a backless silk gown. I was a sophomore working the catering line to pay for textbooks. When I handed her a glass of champagne, she took one look at my secondhand shoes, laughed to her friends, and said, *Careful, girls. The scholarship girl still smells like a dumpster.*

Now, here she was, standing in the penthouse I paid for.

Rosalia took off her sunglasses. Her eyes flicked over my gray cashmere sweater and my bare face. She gave me a thin, blank smile.

"Dante said the place was big," she said. Her voice was high and airy. "It feels a bit crowded, though. Have we met before?"

She knew exactly who I was. The cruelty in her eyes hadn't changed at all.

"We haven't," I lied smoothly.

I picked up the pot and poured myself a cup of black coffee. The dark liquid filled the ceramic mug. My hands didn't shake.

Rosalia didn't wait for another word. She ran a manicured finger over the Italian marble island. Then she walked to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. She ran her hand along the glass, tapping a diamond ring against it.

"The view is decent," she said to the room. "We'll need to change the drapery, of course. Blue is so cold."

She inspected the penthouse like a buyer at an open house. She already thought it belonged to her.

I took a slow sip of my coffee and said nothing. Silence is cheap. Information is expensive.

Over the next two weeks, Rosalia turned our home into a battlefield.

She didn't scream or throw plates. Her warfare was quiet and precise. Every morning, she found a new way to pick at my skin.

She would sit across from me at the breakfast table, buttering toast, and sigh. "Some women have to work so hard to earn their place," she murmured, watching me over her cup. "It’s tragic, really. A real woman doesn’t need a spreadsheet to be valued."

When Dante walked into the room, she looked up at the abstract art on the wall and wrinkled her nose. "The decor is so... self-conscious, isn't it, darling? It feels like someone trying too hard to look established. Like new money trying to hide the dirt."

Dante only chuckled. He adjusted his gold Rolex and kissed the top of her head. He liked seeing her pick at me. It made him feel like a king with two queens fighting for his scrap of attention.

One evening, while Dante was pouring scotch at the bar, Rosalia leaned toward me. Her voice dropped just enough to carry across the room.

"Tell me, Emmeline," she asked, tilting her head with fake pity. "Don't you find it strange? Spending fifty years on earth, working day and night, and never leaving a mark on the world?"

I looked at her over my laptop. "I built an eight-billion-dollar firm, Rosalia."

"A firm," she echoed with a delicate laugh. "Paper and servers. But nothing human. No bloodline. When you die, the company just moves on to someone else. You never left a real mark. It must feel so empty."

Dante didn't defend me. He took a sip of his scotch and looked out the window, pretending he hadn't heard.

Then there was Enzo.

He was twenty-three, tall, with Dante’s dark hair and Rosalia’s cruel mouth. He lived like a prince who had just conquered a small country.

He didn't call me Emmeline. He didn't call me Mrs. Bishop.

"Hey," he said one afternoon, walking into the kitchen in sweatpants. "The wife needs to move her sedan. I'm taking the Porsche out."

I didn't move from my chair. "My name is Emmeline."

"Yeah, whatever," he sneered, grabbing a bottle of green juice from the fridge. "Move it. You're blocking my angle."

Down in the private basement garage, he didn't just park. He parked his custom matte-black sports car sideways, taking up both assigned parking spaces. Dante had bought it for him with company funds. The license plate read: *HEIR1*.

That night, Enzo posted a photo on his social media.

It was a picture of the dining table in our penthouse. A crystal bowl of caviar, expensive wine, and the reflection of Dante laughing in the background. In the caption, Enzo wrote four words:

*Heirlooms deserve heirs.*

I sat in my dark office, looking at the screen. The blue light glowed against the white walls.

I saved the screenshot. Then I sent it to Victoria.

*Let them keep dancing,* I typed.

They thought they were pushing me into a corner. They thought every insult was breaking my spirit. They had no idea they were just handing me the rope to hang them with.
