When My Husband Chose His Mistress Over Our Unborn Baby Chapter 1

The lobby floor is cold. I can feel it through my white coat, through the scrubs underneath, through skin that doesn't feel like mine anymore. Someone is screaming. It takes me a moment to realize it stopped being me several seconds ago.

My mouth tastes like copper. When I breathe, something sharp catches in my ribs—cracked, probably, but I've seen enough X-rays to know it's not punctured. I would be drowning if it were punctured. I'm only bleeding.

The deceased patient's husband is being restrained by security now. Three men in dark uniforms pulling him backward while he shouts words I can't quite hear over the ringing in my ears. His wife died on my table four hours ago. Except it wasn't my table. It wasn't my surgery. It wasn't my incision that severed the uterine artery, wasn't my hands that froze when the hemorrhage started, wasn't my incompetence that killed a mother and her full-term infant in the same ten minutes.

But I signed the statement.

I stood before the hospital board in my bloodstained scrubs—still wearing them from a different surgery, one I actually performed, one where everyone lived—and I read the words Colton's lawyer had prepared. I accepted full responsibility for the death of Sarah Brennan and her daughter. I acknowledged failures in surgical judgment and procedural oversight. I expressed my deepest remorse.

The board had looked at me with something between pity and disgust. Anaya Roberts had sat in the back row, hands folded in her lap, face carefully neutral.

Afterward, Colton's lawyer told me the family had been 'informed' and that I should avoid the main lobby for a few days. I nodded. I went to the surgical wing to finish my notes. I took the main lobby exit because I always take the main lobby exit, because my mother raised me not to hide, because some part of me still believed that telling the truth—even a lie that protected someone else—would mean something.

The husband's fist connected with my cheekbone before I saw him coming. The second hit broke my nose. I remember thinking, clinically, that the cartilage made a sound like snapping celery. His wife was with him. She got my ribs. Security arrived during the fourth or fifth blow. I stopped counting.

Now I'm on the floor, and there's blood on the marble—my blood, for once, instead of a patient's—and someone in teal scrubs is kneeling beside me asking me questions I can't answer because my jaw won't move right.

"Dr. Phillips. Rosie. Can you hear me?"

I nod. It hurts.

"We're taking you to the ER. Don't try to talk."

I close my eyes.

---

The ER attending is someone I've worked with before. Dr. Patel. She's kind. She doesn't ask why I took the blame. She doesn't ask why my husband—who everyone knows has an office twelve blocks away—hasn't answered any of the hospital's calls. She just orders the scans, sets my nose without flinching when I do, and wraps my ribs with steady hands.

"You're lucky," she says quietly. "Nothing's punctured. You'll be in pain for a few weeks, but you'll heal."

I nod again. It still hurts.

She hesitates, glancing at the tablet in her hand. "We ran a full panel. Standard protocol after an assault."

"Okay."

"Rosie." She sits down on the edge of the bed. "You're pregnant."

The room goes very still.

"What?"

"About six weeks, based on HCG levels. I've already paged OB for a confirmation ultrasound, but the numbers are clear. You're pregnant."

I press my hands flat against my thighs. Surgeon's hands. Steady hands. Hands that haven't trembled in an operating room in ten years. They're shaking now.

"That's not possible," I whisper.

"The labs don't lie."

"No, I mean—" I stop. She doesn't know about the accident five years ago. She doesn't know about the damage, the scar tissue, the fertility specialist who told me I had less than a seven percent chance of ever conceiving naturally. She doesn't know I stopped hoping three years ago.

"I need to see it," I say.

Dr. Patel nods. "I'll have someone bring the portable unit."

Twenty minutes later, I'm staring at a grainy black-and-white screen. There's a flicker. Small. Fragile. Real.

"Heartbeat is strong," the ultrasound tech says. "Everything looks good so far."

I can't speak. I press my hands against my abdomen instead—a private gesture, involuntary, the first time I've touched my own body with anything other than clinical detachment in years. There's a life inside me. A life I thought I'd never have. A life that is mine.

And then the second thought arrives, cold and immediate: This child is not safe in Colton's world.

"Don't tell anyone," I say.

The tech blinks. "I'm sorry?"

"Don't put it in the system yet. Please. Just—give me a few days."

Dr. Patel frowns. "Rosie, we have to document—"

"I know." My voice cracks. "I know. Just a few days. Please."

She studies my face for a long moment. Then she nods slowly. "Seventy-two hours. After that, it goes in the chart."

"Thank you."

She squeezes my shoulder and leaves.

I'm alone with the screen now, the flicker still visible. I should feel joy. I should feel relief. Instead, I feel terror so sharp it tastes like metal.

There's a soft knock. Diana Yuen slips into the bay, her face pale.

"Dr. Phillips." She glances at the door, then steps closer. "I heard what happened. I'm so sorry."

"It's fine."

"It's not fine." She reaches into her scrub pocket and pulls out a small phone—cheap, plastic, a burner. She presses it into my hand. "Take this. Don't ask why. Just keep it on you."

"Diana—"

"Anaya has people in the nursing staff. They report to her. Something is being planned. I don't know what, but I know it involves you." Her voice drops. "Please be careful."

I close my fingers around the phone. "Thank you."

She nods and slips out as quietly as she came.

I'm discharged that evening. I take a cab back to the penthouse. Colton isn't there. There's no note. No message. No flowers.

I stand in the kitchen, hands still pressed against my abdomen, and I make a decision: I will protect this child. Even if it costs me everything.

Especially if it costs me everything.

---

The next morning, I return to the hospital for my shift. My face is swollen, purple-yellow around the eyes. My ribs scream with every breath. I move carefully.

I'm halfway down the main corridor when I see her.

Anaya Roberts. Wearing my old department head lanyard. Walking with two of Colton's private security flanking her like she's someone who matters.

She stops when she sees me. Her eyes travel over my bruised face with open satisfaction.

"Rosie." Her voice is pleasant. Warm, even. "I heard about the incident in the lobby. How awful."

I say nothing.

"The board formally accepted your statement, by the way. Your medical license is under review now. They'll probably suspend you pending the investigation." She tilts her head. "Such a shame. You were so good at your job."

I meet her eyes. I don't speak.

Her gaze drops—briefly, deliberately—to my abdomen. Then back to my face. She smiles.

"Are you feeling all right, Rosie? You look… different."

My blood turns to ice.

She knows.

She already knows.

Jagger wasn't a charity case; he was Baron's illegitimate son. The family had been illegally funneling offshore money to fund his elite lifestyle. Worse, Baron's ultimate plan was to label Frances mentally unstable, lock her away in a Swiss sanatorium for life, and bring in Jagger's biological mother to take her place. For years, Frances had played the perfect, obedient wife in their corporate marriage contract. How could they be so ruthlessly evil, plotting her agonizing death just to legitimize their dirty bloodline and steal her trust fund? But she was no longer the fragile puppet they thought she was. At the high-stakes board meeting, with all eyes expecting her to submit, she put the expensive pen down. "I refuse." Instead of adopting their bastard son, she slammed down an SEC whistleblower threat, forced a new will, and introduced her own handpicked heir. The war had just begun.
