Chapter 2

Five weeks after the rejection, I learned that packless doesn't mean invisible. It means the opposite.

Every wolf in Shadowridge could see me. They just chose not to look.

The Deltas who used to nod when I passed now found fascinating reasons to study the floor. The she-wolves who'd asked my opinion on ceremony flowers crossed to the other side of corridors when they saw me coming. The elders—the same ones who'd told me to be patient, to be understanding, to consider the pack's morale—now had urgent business elsewhere whenever I entered a room.

I was still here. Still technically within the territory. But the pack had realigned around a new social reality, and in that reality, I was already gone.

The worst part wasn't the avoidance. It was the mark.

The cold scar on my neck—the dead bond Jack had severed at the altar—spiked without warning. Sharp, icy pulses that had nothing to do with my own emotions. It took me three days to understand what was happening. The bond was dead, but the frequency wasn't entirely silent. Whenever Jack experienced something intense—rage, satisfaction, whatever he felt when Molly called—the severed connection transmitted it through my body like a ghost signal I couldn't turn off.

I felt his moods. His spikes of irritation. His moments of smug certainty.

I felt him, and I hated it.

The Harvest Pack Run was one of Shadowridge's oldest rituals. Every wolf ran together under the autumn moon—Alphas, Deltas, Omegas, everyone. It was supposed to be sacred. Communal. The one night where rank dissolved and the pack moved as a single body through the forest.

Jack promised he would run beside me.

I believed him. Not because I trusted him anymore, but because my pregnancy was showing now—a visible curve under my shirt that I could no longer hide—and running alone while carrying a pup was dangerous. He knew that. He'd said the words himself two nights before: "I'll be there. I promise."

I arrived at the gathering point just after sunset. The clearing was already full of wolves in various stages of shifting—bones cracking, fur rippling, the low hum of pack energy building as three hundred wolves prepared to run. I shifted into my wolf form and waited at the edge of the assembly point.

Jack didn't appear.

One by one, the other wolves finished shifting and moved toward the run path. I stayed where I was. Waiting. The clearing emptied. The sound of the pack—paws on earth, low howls, the rhythm of bodies moving together—faded into the dark.

I was alone.

The mind-link came through Jack's Beta. Formal. Apologetic in that way that wasn't actually an apology.

"Alpha Powell has been called to attend to a packmate in distress. He sends his regrets."

I didn't ask which packmate.

I already knew.

I stood at the edge of the run path—every other wolf already deep in the forest, the ritual I'd been part of my entire life happening without me—and felt the last thread snap.

Not the bond. That had been dead for five weeks.

This was something else. The irrational, biological pull that had kept whispering *maybe*. The small, stupid hope that had made me show up tonight at all. It went completely silent. Not gradually. All at once.

My wolf—who'd been so quiet since the rejection, barely more than a whisper inside me—spoke a single word.

*Enough.*

I shifted and ran.

Not with the pack. Away from it. Through the back-country terrain I knew better than anyone—the ridge paths and hidden streams Jack had never bothered to learn. I ran until my lungs burned and my legs ached and the sound of the pack was gone entirely. I ran until the only thing I could hear was my own heartbeat and the wind in the trees.

When I returned to my quarters hours later, the decision was already made.

I was leaving Shadowridge.

The next morning, I tracked Jack to the warriors' lounge. I needed my travel documents from the Alpha's safe—the last practical item tethering me to Shadowridge's administrative systems. The safe was in his office, which connected to the lounge through a side door.

I heard his voice before I reached the entrance.

Easy. Confident. Performing.

"She'll crawl back. Rejected mates always do. Give it another week."

Laughter. Male voices I recognized—his Betas, the wolves who'd stood beside him at the altar and watched him reject me without saying a word.

I stopped in the doorway.

One of the Betas saw me. His face went white. The laughter died mid-breath.

Jack turned.

For three seconds, no one moved. The room was frozen—six wolves caught mid-conversation, coffee cups halfway to mouths, smug grins still dying on their faces.

I crossed the room.

Not fast. Not slow. I walked with the same measured pace I'd used to leave the altar five weeks ago. I reached the table where Jack sat and placed his pack-house keys on the surface between us. Not thrown. Not slammed. Set down with the finality of a filed document.

"I'm severing every remaining tie to Shadowridge Pack," I said.

My voice was calm. Clear. It carried to every corner of the room.

Jack stared at me. The smugness on his face—the easy certainty that had been there seconds before—curdled into something he couldn't name. Confusion. Disbelief. The first edge of something that might have been fear.

I walked past him to the office door. The safe was behind his desk—standard pack protocol, combination unchanged since his father's tenure. I opened it. Retrieved my travel documents. Closed it.

When I turned back, Jack was standing.

"Olive—"

"Don't," I said.

He stopped.

I looked at him. Really looked. At the wolf who'd promised to run beside me and hadn't shown up. At the Alpha who'd rejected me in front of three hundred witnesses and then told his Betas I'd crawl back.

I felt nothing.

Not rage. Not grief. Not even contempt.

Just a cold, clarifying certainty that I was done.

I walked out.

Behind me, the warriors' lounge stayed silent. No one called after me. No one followed.

The cold mark on my neck pulsed once—a final ghost signal from the bond that used to be—and then went still.

I pressed my hand to my belly. Five months. A pup who deserved better than this. A future I was going to build alone.

I had Kiara watching Molly. I had my documents. I had a plan.

And I had nothing left to lose.
