Chapter 3

That evening, I sat on the floor of my quarters with my phone in one hand and a decision I'd already made in the other.

The Shadowridge mind-link frequency hummed faintly in the back of my consciousness—a channel I'd kept open out of habit more than anything else. For five weeks, Jack had flooded it nightly. Howls that echoed into the empty space between us. Fragmented sentences that swung wildly between rage and something he probably thought was tenderness. "Come back." "You're being unreasonable." "The pup needs its pack." "I can fix this."

I'd stopped listening after the first week. But the channel had stayed open because closing it felt final in a way I hadn't been ready for.

I was ready now.

I pulled up the mind-link settings and found the frequency control buried in the mental architecture every wolf learned to navigate by adolescence. Shadowridge's channel glowed faint blue in my mind's eye—still active, still transmitting Jack's nightly static into a space I no longer occupied.

I severed it.

The connection went dark. The faint hum disappeared. The ghost-channel that had been carrying Jack's desperation into my skull for five weeks flatlined into absolute silence.

I felt nothing. No grief. No relief. Just the clean, empty quiet of a door that had finally closed.

I set the phone down and opened my laptop.

The Lycan Crown's employment portal had been open in a browser tab for three days. I'd read the contract terms so many times I'd memorized them. Five-year service agreement. Training young wolves under direct Crown jurisdiction. Housing provided. Salary deposited into an account requiring no pack affiliation or Alpha approval.

No pack affiliation. No Alpha approval.

I filled out the digital forms with the same methodical precision I'd used to redirect the ceremony feast five weeks ago. Name. Previous pack affiliation—I typed "Shadowridge" and felt nothing. Current bond status—I selected "Severed" from the dropdown menu and moved on. Pregnancy status—I checked the box marked "Yes" and attached the healer's records from my pocket.

When I reached the signature field, I paused.

Signing this meant I was really leaving. Not temporarily. Not as a threat or a negotiation tactic. I was severing the last institutional thread connecting me to Shadowridge, and there would be no going back.

I signed.

The system processed the submission in under ten seconds. A confirmation message appeared: "Contract accepted. Report to Ironveil training grounds on arrival. Welcome to the Lycan Crown's service."

I closed the laptop.

Outside, the winter storm I'd been tracking all week had finally arrived. Snow drove sideways past the window, wind howling through the pack house eaves. Perfect. The storm would erase my tracks. By the time anyone realized I was gone, I'd already be across the border.

I packed a single bag. Clothes. The healer's records. The confirmation email printed and folded into a waterproof envelope. I left everything else—the ceremony dress still hanging in the closet, the books on the shelf, the small collection of things I'd accumulated over two years of believing I'd be Luna.

None of it mattered.

I shouldered the bag and walked out. The pack house corridors were empty—most wolves were inside, sheltering from the storm. I passed the warriors' lounge where Jack had laughed six days ago. The ceremony hall where he'd rejected me five weeks ago. The Alpha's office where I'd retrieved my documents and felt absolutely nothing.

I walked through all of it without looking back.

The storm hit me the moment I stepped outside. Snow stung my face. Wind tore at my coat. I shifted into my wolf form—easier to navigate the terrain, harder to track—and ran.

The Shadowridge border was three miles through back-country forest I knew better than anyone. I'd run these paths my entire life. Every ridge. Every hidden stream. Every shortcut Jack had never bothered to learn.

I reached the border marker—a stone cairn half-buried in snow—and stopped.

This was it. The line between the life I'd had and the one I was choosing. Once I crossed, there was no coming back. Not as the same wolf. Not to the same pack.

I thought about Jack. About the altar. About the warriors' lounge and the smug certainty on his face when he'd said I'd crawl back.

I thought about the pup growing inside me. Five months. A life that deserved better than this.

I crossed the border.

The moment my paws touched Ironveil territory, something inside me cracked.

Not the bond. That had been dead for five weeks.

This was something older. Deeper. The last fragile thread of hope I'd been carrying without realizing it—the irrational belief that maybe, somehow, this could still be fixed.

It couldn't.

I stopped running. Shifted back to human form. And for the first time since the altar, I cried.

Not quietly. Not composed. I stood alone in the storm with snow driving into my face and sobbed—great, ugly, wrenching sounds that the wind swallowed before they could travel. I cried for the life I'd lost. For the bond that had broken. For the wolf who'd promised to run beside me and hadn't shown up.

I cried until my throat was raw and my chest ached and there was nothing left.

Then I stopped.

I pressed two fingers to the cold mark on my neck. It pulsed once—faint, distant, already fading. I wiped my face. Shifted back into my wolf form. And ran toward the Ironveil gate.

By the time I reached the border checkpoint, my eyes were dry. My breathing was steady. The cold dead mark was hidden beneath my collar.

The Lycan border guard—a massive grey wolf who shifted to human form to process my entry—took my documents without comment. He scanned the contract confirmation. Checked my identification. Logged my arrival in the system.

"Welcome to Ironveil," he said.

His tone was neutral. Professional. He didn't ask why I was arriving alone in a winter storm with a single bag and a pregnancy I couldn't hide. He didn't need to. The Lycan Crown's territories saw a lot of wolves crossing borders for reasons they didn't want to explain.

I thanked him and walked through the gate.

The storm was already easing. The wind died down. The snow thinned to scattered flakes drifting through the dark.

I stood on Ironveil soil and felt the future open in front of me—uncertain, terrifying, and entirely mine.

I pressed my hand to my belly. Five months. A pup who would never know the pack that had watched its mother get rejected at an altar.

I had a contract. I had a plan. I had nothing left to lose.

And I had just enough left to build something new.
