After My Alpha Rejected Me, His Pack Collapsed Chapter 1

The bonfire crackled in the center of the clearing, throwing shadows across the faces of the Ironridge Pack. I stood at the edge of the crowd, scanning for Derek. The air smelled of roasting meat and pine smoke. Pack members clustered in groups, talking and laughing. It was the annual bonfire celebration. Everyone was here.

I spotted him near the central firepit. My breath caught.

Derek sat on a log bench, his broad shoulders relaxed. Beside him was Willa McDonald, a she-wolf from the neighboring Crescent Ridge Pack. She was young, maybe twenty-three. Her blonde hair caught the firelight. She wore a tight red dress that showed off her curves.

I watched as Derek lifted a piece of roasted meat to Willa's mouth. She took it from his fingers, her eyes half-closed. He smiled. Then he leaned in and pressed his nose to the side of her neck, right where a mate mark should be. His hand cupped the back of her head, holding her in place.

The clearing went quiet. Conversations stopped mid-sentence. Pack members glanced at me, then quickly looked away.

I stood frozen. My chest felt tight. I pressed my thumb against my wrist, an old habit. My pulse hammered beneath my skin.

Derek pulled back from Willa's neck. He looked up and saw me. For a second, something flickered across his face. Then it hardened.

He stood. Willa clung to his arm, her expression smug. Derek stepped forward, away from the firepit. His voice carried across the clearing.

"Sabrina."

I didn't move. Every eye in the pack was on us now.

Derek walked closer. He stopped about ten feet away. His jaw was set. His eyes were cold.

"I've been patient," he said. His tone was loud, deliberate. "Ten years, I've been patient with you."

My throat felt dry. I didn't speak.

"You're wolfless," Derek continued. "You can barely shift. You've given me no heirs. Your looks are fading. You're a burden on this pack."

The words landed like stones. I felt the pack's collective discomfort ripple through the air. No one spoke.

Derek's voice grew harder. "You're not fit to be Luna of Ironridge."

I forced myself to meet his gaze. My hands were steady at my sides, but inside, something was cracking.

"I, Derek Carlson, Alpha of the Ironridge Pack," he said, each word deliberate, "reject you, Sabrina Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

The bond snapped.

Pain tore through me like lightning. It started in my chest and radiated outward, burning through every nerve. My knees buckled. I gasped, pressing a hand to my ribs.

But I didn't fall.

Something else surged up inside me. Something ancient. Something that had been sleeping for ten years.

My wolf.

She roared to the surface with a force that cracked the ground beneath my feet. The floorboards of the wooden platform under me splintered. My vision flashed silver. For one heartbeat, I felt her fully—massive, ferocious, silver-white. The air around me shimmered with power.

Derek took a step back. His face went pale.

I forced the wolf down. It cost me everything I had, but I shoved her back into the dark. My eyes returned to normal. The ground stopped shaking.

I straightened. The pain was still there, a deep ache in my chest, but I didn't let it show.

"I accept your rejection," I said. My voice was calm. Steady.

Derek blinked. He looked thrown.

I turned my gaze to Willa. She was still clinging to his arm, her eyes wide. She looked scared now.

"Good luck," I said to her. Then I looked back at Derek. "You'll need it."

I turned and walked toward the tree line. No one stopped me. No one said a word.

Behind me, Derek's voice rang out. "You have until morning to clear out of the pack house. Willa will be moving into your quarters."

I didn't look back.

The trees swallowed me. The sounds of the bonfire faded. My legs carried me forward on autopilot. The pain in my chest throbbed with every step, but I kept walking.

I reached the border. The scent markers were faint here, barely maintained. Ironridge's territory had always been weak.

Beyond the border, headlights cut through the darkness.

An armored black SUV idled on the dirt road. It was sleek, reinforced, and bore a silver crest on the door—the crest of the Silvercrest Lycan Court.

My father's crest.

The back door opened. Marcus Hale, my father's royal Beta, stepped out. He was tall, silver-armored, his face composed. He bowed his head.

"Princess," he said quietly.

I looked past him into the SUV. Archie sat on the back seat, his golden fur gleaming in the interior light. His tail thumped when he saw me.

I felt something crack inside me. Not the bond this time. Something deeper.

I climbed into the SUV. Archie pressed his head against my leg. I rested my hand on his fur.

Marcus closed the door and got into the driver's seat. The engine purred to life.

"Home, Princess?" he asked.

I nodded. "Home."

The convoy pulled away. Through the tinted window, I watched the Ironridge border disappear into the night.

I didn't cry. I didn't look back.

I just sat in the dark, Archie warm against my side, and let the decade I'd buried finally begin to surface.
