Chapter 2

POV: Elena

The silence in the house was deafening.

Elena dropped her keys onto the marble console in the entryway. The metallic clatter echoed through the cavernous, two-story foyer, only emphasizing how hollow the space truly was.

She walked slowly into the kitchen.

On the granite island sat the remnants of her morning: an open bag of organic flour, measuring spoons tossed in the sink, and the faint, lingering smell of vanilla. Her gaze drifted down to her right wrist, where a fresh, angry red burn from the oven rack throbbed under the skin.

She turned her palms upward.

Her fingers were rough and calloused. There were faint scars from paring knives, cracked cuticles from harsh detergents, and dry skin from eight years of scrubbing floors, steaming suits, and cooking three meals a day from scratch. Julian had unlimited wealth, yet he had always praised her for being "grounded" and "traditional," telling her that hired maids couldn't give a family real warmth.

So she had given them her youth, her hands, and her life.

Elena looked up at the gallery wall leading toward the staircase. Dozens of silver-framed photographs lined the hallway. There was Julian on their wedding day, smiling faintly beside her. There was Leo taking his first steps, his tiny hands wrapped around her index finger.

It was all a lie.

A cruel, beautifully staged performance where she was the only one who didn't know the script.

Elena stood in the dark living room as the grandfather clock chimed ten. Then eleven.

At a quarter past eleven, the front door finally clicked open.

Loud, careless laughter broke the quiet. Julian walked in, his navy suit jacket slung loosely over one shoulder, his tie loosened at the collar. Beside him, Leo stumbled into the foyer, clutching a massive cardboard box nearly as big as his torso.

The air shifted immediately, thick with the intoxicating scent of sweet jasmine.

It clung to Julian’s shirt. It clung to Leo’s hair.

"Look, Dad! If I press this lever, the wings expand!" Leo shouted, his voice hoarse and buzzing with manic energy.

"Careful with the box, buddy," Julian said, his voice unusually relaxed. "That’s an imported collector’s edition. You won't find another one in the city."

Elena stepped out of the shadow of the hallway. "Julian? Do you know what time it is?"

Leo flinched at the sound of her voice, his wide smile dropping instantly. Julian stopped, his expression hardening into cold annoyance the moment his eyes landed on her.

"Leo has a math quiz at eight tomorrow morning," Elena said, keeping her voice as steady as she could. "He should have been in bed three hours ago."

"Oh, stop nagging, Elena," Julian scoffed, tossing his keys onto the counter. "It’s Family Day. The rules don't apply. Chloe took us to the private lounge at the plaza, then bought him dinner and took him to the flagship toy store."

"Chloe bought it for me!" Leo piped up, turning the enormous box toward Elena so she could see the glossy packaging. "It’s the limited-edition Cyber-Titan! It costs two thousand dollars! You never buy me anything cool like this!"

Elena looked down at her son. His cheeks were flushed from soda, his eyes gleaming with greedy excitement.

"Leo, you have two toy chests full of toys," Elena said softly. "And I don't buy things like that because you're seven, not because..."

"Chloe says seven is old enough to appreciate real quality," Leo cut in, puffing out his small chest. "She let me sit in the front seat of her convertible with the top down! The wind was so fast, and everybody looked at us! She smells like flowers, not like bleach and old soup."

Elena felt an ache deep in her chest, sharp and suffocating. "Leo, I cook for you every single day."

"Nobody asked you to!" the boy snapped, hugging the box tightly to his chest. "Chloe says private chefs make better food anyway. She took us to a French bistro and ordered chocolate soufflé just for me!"

Before Elena could answer, Julian’s phone buzzed in his pocket.

He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and the irritation on his face vanished completely. He stepped away toward the French doors leading to the patio, his posture relaxing, his voice dropping into a tender, intimate cadence Elena hadn't heard directed at her in years.

"Hey," Julian murmured into the receiver. "Did you get home safe?"

Elena stood frozen in the hallway, watching his silhouette against the glass.

"No, don't apologize," Julian said softly, a low chuckle escaping his lips. "You made his entire year. He hasn't stopped talking about the car... Yeah, I’ll make sure he sleeps... Thank you for today, Chloe. Truly. Get some rest, sweetheart."

He lingered for a second after hanging up, staring at the screen with a faint, dreamy smile before sliding the phone back into his pocket.

When he turned back around and saw Elena standing there, the warmth on his face died instantly.

"Tomorrow morning, I want the east guest suite on the second floor completely cleared out," Julian ordered, walking past her toward the stairs without pausing. "Change the linens, air out the room, and empty the walk-in closet."

Elena’s heart skipped a jagged beat. "What did you just say?"

Julian stopped on the third step, looking down at her like an impatient CEO addressing an incompetent subordinate.

"Chloe is staying with us for a while," Julian said flatly.

Elena stared at him, unable to fathom the words coming out of his mouth. "You're bringing her into our house? Into my home?"

"It's my house, Elena. I pay the mortgage," Julian shot back coldly. "And Chloe offered to help manage Leo's schedule. She knows the headmaster at St. Jude, she moves in the right social circles, and she can teach him proper etiquette. You clearly proved this morning that you don't belong in that world. You're holding him back."

"She's your ex-girlfriend, Julian!" Elena’s voice cracked, the fury breaking through the numbness. "You humiliated me in front of hundreds of people today so you could play house with her on the school lawn! And now you want to move her into the bedroom down the hall from ours?"

"Keep your voice down," Julian warned, his eyes narrowing with icy contempt. "Chloe is an old friend who is doing our family a massive favor out of the goodness of her heart. If you had half her class or her connections, I wouldn't have to ask her. Stop acting like a hysterical, jealous housewife."

"I am your wife!" Elena choked out, the tears stinging the edges of her vision.

"Mom, shut up!"

The shrill shout came from the foot of the stairs.

Elena turned, stunned.

Leo was glaring at her with pure venom, his small hands clenched into fists beside his expensive toy box.

"Stop yelling at Dad!" Leo screamed, his face twisted in disgust. "Why can't you just be pretty and classy like Auntie Chloe? All you do is wear ugly aprons, smell bad, and ruin everything! I wish Auntie Chloe was my real mom! You're just an embarrassment!"

The world stopped.

The grandfather clock in the corner seemed to freeze. The air vanished from Elena's lungs.

She looked down at the boy she had carried for nine months. The boy she had labored thirty-six hours to bring into the world. The boy whose fevers she had cooled with damp towels through countless sleepless nights, whose scraped knees she had kissed, whose favorite meals she had prepared every day of his life.

*I wish Auntie Chloe was my real mom.*

*You're just an embarrassment.*

Elena stood perfectly still under the chandelier's bright light.

Julian didn't scold him. He didn't tell Leo to apologize. Instead, Julian simply reached down, rested a hand gently on Leo’s shoulder, and gave him an approving nod.

"Come on, Leo. Let's get you upstairs," Julian said quietly.

They walked up the stairs together, side by side, leaving Elena standing alone on the cold marble floor below.

The stinging in Elena’s eyes disappeared. The crushing weight on her chest suddenly lifted, replaced by a profound, hollow stillness.

The devotion she had carried for eight years didn't just break.

It died.

Elena looked at her rough, scarred hands one last time, then slowly let them drop to her sides.

If they wanted Chloe to be the mother of this house... she would let them have exactly what they wished for.
