Chapter 3

POV: Elena

The sound of Julian’s bedroom door closing upstairs echoed down the dark stairwell.

Elena didn't move. She stood in the center of the vast, hollow living room, listening to the silence settle over the house.

She didn't cry. The burning grief that had suffocated her chest for hours was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, impenetrable numbness.

Leo's cruel words still hung in the air like poison.

*I wish Auntie Chloe was my real mom. You're just an embarrassment.*

Elena walked past the gallery wall without a single glance at the framed photographs. She climbed the stairs quietly, turning toward the private study at the far end of the corridor.

Inside, the room smelled of rich mahogany and aged scotch. Julian rarely allowed her in here, treating the room as his executive sanctuary. He had always assumed she was content with kitchen counters and laundry baskets.

Elena walked directly behind the heavy desk, knelt down, and pulled a small brass key from the lining of her wallet.

She inserted it into the lowest drawer, hidden behind a false panel. It unlocked with a soft, clean click.

Inside rested a thick manila folder she had quietly kept current for seven years.

Back when Leo was an infant and Julian’s controlling temper had first flared, she had consulted an elite attorney and drafted ironclad terms. But when Julian begged for forgiveness, swearing he would change, she had locked the folder away. She had surrendered her career, her ambitions, and her independence to raise their son.

She opened the file. The title was bold and clear: *Divorce and Marital Asset Settlement Agreement.*

Elena took a pen from the desk stand. Without a second of hesitation, she turned to the final page and signed her name in sharp, elegant strokes.

She packed a single suitcase with only her pre-marriage clothes, personal identification, and bank records.

She left behind every piece of jewelry Julian had ever bought her.

***

Morning arrived with pale, cold sunlight cutting through the dining room's floor-to-ceiling windows.

By eight o'clock, the air was already filled with the clatter of silver against fine bone china.

Julian sat at the head of the oak table in a crisp charcoal suit, scrolling through market reports on his tablet while sipping an espresso. Across from him sat Chloe, dressed in an ivory silk blouse, delicately buttering a croissant.

Leo sat between them, poking at a plate of fluffy scrambled eggs with visible disgust.

"This is nasty," Leo whined, dropping his silver fork with a loud clatter. "The eggs are cold, and there isn't any black truffle butter like the hotel had yesterday. Auntie Chloe, when is your chef getting here? I can't eat this peasant food!"

Julian let out a low chuckle, not bothering to look up from his screen. "He'll be here by lunch, buddy. If you don't like it, push it away. You don't have to force down garbage."

"Leo, sweetheart," Chloe purred, reaching across the table to smooth his hair with manicured fingers. "A little gentleman should always have the finest things. Just drink your fresh juice. Auntie Chloe will buy you warm Belgian waffles on the way to school."

"You're the best, Chloe!" Leo beamed, puffing out his small chest.

Elena stepped into the dining room.

She wore a simple dark wool sweater, slim tailored trousers, and flat leather boots. Her hair was tied back in a neat, low ponytail, completely unadorned.

Under her arm, she held the heavy manila folder.

Julian glanced up briefly, his brow furrowing with habitual irritation. "You're late with the fresh coffee, Elena. And clear Leo's plate. He isn't eating your slop today."

Elena didn't reach for the plate.

Instead, she stepped forward and slammed the thick folder down onto the polished wood, right between Julian's espresso cup and his tablet.

*Smack.*

The sharp impact rattled the china. Hot espresso sloshed over the rim, spilling across the pristine white linen tablecloth.

"What the hell is your problem?" Julian snapped, jumping back and grabbing a cloth napkin to dab at his cuff. "Have you completely lost your mind?"

Chloe gasped softly, pulling her silk sleeves back with exaggerated poise. "Elena, really. There’s no need to take your morning frustration out on the table."

Elena didn't look at Chloe. She kept her eyes locked on Julian.

"Read it," Elena said, her voice terrifyingly steady.

Julian glared at her, his jaw clenching as he yanked the folder open.

His eyes hit the bold header on the first page: *DIVORCE AND MARITAL ASSET SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT.*

For a split second, Julian froze. A flash of genuine shock flickered across his face, but it vanished instantly, overtaken by a condescending sneer.

He tossed the papers back onto the table and let out a dry, incredulous laugh.

"A divorce?" Julian leaned back against his leather chair, crossing his arms with smug amusement. "Is this your pathetic attempt at a temper tantrum because Chloe is moving into the guest room?"

"The terms are finalized," Elena replied, her tone void of emotion. "Sign them."

Chloe leaned forward, peeking at the documents with a subtle, triumphant gleam in her eyes before putting on a face of gentle concern. "Elena, please... let's be rational. Julian provides an extraordinary life for you. You haven't worked in eight years. You have no career, no connections... what could you possibly do on your own?"

"Be quiet, Chloe," Elena said without turning her head.

Julian’s hand slammed down on the table, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Don't you dare speak to her like that in my house!"

"It won't be my concern for much longer," Elena said. "Just sign it, Julian."

Julian snatched up the summary sheet, scoffing loudly as his eyes scanned the asset division.

"You're waiving spousal support? You're walking away from the estate? From my equity?" Julian shook his head, looking at her like she was an absolute fool. "You really think you're making a grand statement, don't you? Let me remind you of reality, Elena. You've lived off my wealth for eight years. You don't even have a valid credit score. Without my credit card, you won't last three days before you can't even afford rent on a roach-infested studio!"

Elena didn't flinch. "That is my business, not yours."

"It becomes my business when you come crawling back to this doorstep on your hands and knees next week," Julian sneered.

He seized the pen, flipping violently to the final page. With aggressive, heavy strokes, he scrawled his signature across the dotted line.

He shoved the papers across the table, sending them skidding to a halt right in front of her.

"Let me make one thing crystal clear to you," Julian hissed, leaning forward, his voice dripping with venomous arrogance. "You sign this and walk out that door, and you will never see a single dime of my fortune. Not one cent of alimony. And you can completely forget about Leo."

Julian pointed an accusatory finger straight at her face.

"You will never see my son again," Julian threatened coldly. "I'll hire the top family attorneys in the state. I'll make sure the judge rules you an unstable, destitute runaway who abandoned her child."

At the other side of the table, Leo crossed his arms, glaring at Elena with pure malice.

"Good!" Leo shouted, his small face twisting in triumph. "I don't ever want to see you again anyway! Auntie Chloe is going to take me to school in her sports car, and she’s going to be my real mom! Get out of our house!"

Elena looked down at the boy who shared her blood.

There was no confusion in his eyes. No hesitation. Only the cold, selfish cruelty he had inherited from his father.

The very last thread tying her heart to this child snapped cleanly.

She felt no anger. She felt no sorrow.

Elena picked up her signed copy of the settlement and tucked it neatly beneath her arm.

Then, she looked directly into Julian’s mocking eyes.

"As you wish, Julian," Elena said, her voice ringing clear and sharp through the quiet room. "From this day forward, neither of you deserves me."

Julian’s sneer tightened slightly, a momentary hesitation flickering in his gaze at the unnatural stillness in her voice.

Elena didn't wait for him to respond.

She turned on her heel and walked out of the dining room.

Her boots clicked firmly against the white marble floor of the foyer. She took hold of the suitcase waiting by the archway, opened the heavy mahogany front door, and stepped out into the crisp morning light.

Behind her, the door slammed shut with a final, echoing thud.
