Chapter 3

The night wrapped around me like a protective cloak as I slipped through the shadowed corridors of the Moonveil pack house. My heart hammered against my ribs, each beat a reminder of what I was risking. Three years of humiliation had culminated in this moment—this act of rebellion that Lyra had been urging me toward for months.

*They're all asleep,* Lyra whispered within me. *Even the guards are dozing. Now's our chance.*

"I know," I murmured, my fingers trailing along the cool stone wall as I navigated the familiar path to the council chambers. The moonlight filtering through the high windows cast elongated shadows across the marble floor, creating a dance of light and dark that mirrored the conflict in my soul.

The heavy oak door of the council chamber creaked slightly as I eased it open, and I froze, listening for any sign that I'd been discovered. When nothing but silence greeted me, I slipped inside, closing the door with a soft click.

"Where would he hide them?" I whispered to Lyra as my eyes adjusted to the darkness.

*Behind the Mitchell crest,* she suggested. *Your father would have insisted on keeping our family's documents near our symbol.*

I moved to the far wall where the pack crests hung in a solemn row—Moonveil's prominent in the center, with the Mitchell crest relegated to a shadowy corner since Kyle's announcement about Amanda. My fingers traced the silver wolf emblem of my birth pack, feeling for any irregularity.

There—a slight depression behind the right edge. I pressed gently, and a small panel slid open, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside lay a collection of ancient scrolls, their parchment yellowed with age but the Mitchell seal still vibrant upon them.

"The territorial covenants," I breathed, carefully extracting the documents.

I unrolled the first scroll on the council table, using my phone's flashlight to illuminate the elegant script. My father's words came back to me as I read the cleverly worded clauses:

"...the Mitchell territories shall remain under Mitchell sovereignty, with provisional stewardship granted to the Moonveil Alpha conditionally upon the continued recognition of Luna Sophia Mitchell as the Moonveil Luna..."

A smile spread across my face—the first genuine one in months. "He never read the fine print," I whispered triumphantly.

*Of course not,* Lyra scoffed. *Kyle was too busy celebrating his 'victory' to examine what he'd actually won.*

I carefully photographed each document before returning them to their hiding place. These would be my insurance—my proof that Kyle's empire was built on sand.

* * *

The waning moon cast a silvery light over the clearing as the pack gathered for what Kyle had smugly called my "farewell ceremony." He stood at the center, Amanda pressed possessively against his side, both of them wearing expressions of barely concealed triumph.

I approached slowly, my head held high despite the whispers that rippled through the crowd. The Mitchell medallion hung heavy around my neck, a reminder of who I was beyond this bond.

"Let's get this over with," Kyle said impatiently as I took my place opposite him in the sacred circle. "Do you know the words?"

"Better than you ever did," I replied softly, my voice carrying in the hushed clearing.

Lyra stirred within me, lending me her strength as I faced the man who had used me as a stepping stone to power. For a moment, I allowed myself to remember the hope I'd felt three years ago, standing in this same clearing, believing I'd found my forever.

"I, Luna Sophia Mitchell," I began, my voice clear and unwavering, "release you, Alpha Kyle Harrison, from our bond."

The moment the words left my lips, a searing pain tore through my chest—the physical manifestation of our bond severing. I gasped but remained standing, refusing to show weakness before him. Across from me, Kyle staggered slightly, his face contorting in momentary agony before he mastered himself.

"It is done," the pack elder announced solemnly.

I turned to leave, but Kyle's voice stopped me.

"The Mitchell territories remain with Moonveil," he stated loudly, for the benefit of the witnesses. "As agreed in our mating contract."

I looked back at him, allowing a small, knowing smile to curve my lips. "Check your contracts, Alpha Harrison. You might find they don't say quite what you think they do."

The flicker of uncertainty in his eyes was worth every moment of pain I'd endured.

* * *

Midnight found me at the northern border of Moonveil territory, a single satchel slung over my shoulder containing my most precious possessions and the covenant photographs. The forest was alive with night sounds—the rustle of leaves, the distant call of an owl, the soft padding of approaching footsteps.

I tensed, Lyra instantly alert within me, ready to transform if necessary.

"Luna Mitchell?" a deep voice called softly from the shadows.

Two wolves emerged from the treeline, their postures respectful rather than threatening. They shifted smoothly into their human forms—a man and woman wearing the distinctive silver and black colors of the Sterling Pack.

"Alpha Marcus sent us," the woman explained, extending her hand. "I'm Eliza, his Beta. This is Dominic, our head tracker."

"How did he know?" I asked, surprised that the Sterling Alpha had anticipated my departure.

Eliza smiled. "Alpha Marcus has been watching the Moonveil situation with... interest. He offers you sanctuary and a place within our pack, should you wish it."

I hesitated, glancing back at the territory that had been my home for three years. Somewhere in that darkness, Kyle was probably celebrating with Amanda, believing he had won.

"He thinks it's over," I murmured, more to myself than to my companions.

"Is it?" Dominic asked, his eyebrow raised in curiosity.

Lyra's anticipation surged through me as I turned toward Sterling territory and my uncertain future. "No," I said firmly. "It's just beginning."

With one last look at my past, I stepped across the border, leaving behind the woman Kyle had broken and becoming someone new—someone stronger, someone who would make him regret the day he underestimated Sophia Mitchell.
