Unmasking the Alpha's Deceit Chapter 1

The full moon hung heavy in the night sky, casting an ethereal glow over the forest as I stood at the edge of the clearing with the rest of the Moonveil Pack. My heart thrummed with anticipation. The Full Moon Run was sacred—a time when mates ran together, celebrating their bond under the Moon Goddess's watchful eye.

"Are you ready?" I asked Kyle, my voice soft as I moved to stand beside him.

My mate—my Alpha—barely glanced my way. "Find your place, Sophia," he said dismissively, his eyes scanning the crowd.

Lyra, my wolf, paced restlessly within me. *Something's wrong,* she whispered. *He's waiting for her.*

I pushed her concern aside. Three years of marriage had taught me to temper my expectations. "I thought we would run together tonight," I ventured carefully. "It's tradition for—"

"Traditions change," Kyle cut me off, his tone final.

Before I could respond, Amanda Chen emerged from the crowd, her lithe form moving with deliberate grace as she approached. Kyle's entire demeanor shifted. His shoulders relaxed, and a smile—one I hadn't seen directed at me in months—spread across his face.

"Alpha," she greeted him, her eyes flicking briefly to me with barely concealed triumph.

"Amanda," he replied, his voice warm in a way that made my stomach twist. "Ready to lead the pack tonight?"

Lyra howled in distress as Amanda took her place beside Kyle—my place. When the run began, they shot forward together, their wolves moving in perfect synchrony at the head of the pack. Kyle's dark brown wolf, Rage, nuzzled against Amanda's grey form with an intimacy that stabbed through my chest.

*He's scent-marking her,* Lyra snarled. *In front of everyone!*

I ran alone that night, at the back of the pack, swallowing the humiliation that burned like acid in my throat.

The next morning, I clutched a stack of territorial reports against my chest as I approached Kyle's study. Perhaps if I showed him how well the Mitchell territory integration was progressing, he might remember why we were mated in the first place.

I paused outside his door, hearing low voices within. My hand froze mid-knock as Lyra urged me to listen.

"You smell divine today," Kyle's voice, husky with desire, drifted through the door.

A feminine laugh followed—Amanda's. "Only for you, Alpha."

Something in me snapped. I pushed the door open without knocking.

The scene before me confirmed my worst fears. Kyle stood with Amanda pressed against his desk, his face buried in the crook of her neck. His powerful Alpha aura filled the room—an aura he claimed was too weak to share with me because of our "incompatible bond."

They sprang apart when I entered, but not quickly enough. The intimacy of their position was unmistakable. Kyle had been scent-marking her—an act reserved for mates.

"Luna Sophia," Amanda acknowledged me with false deference, her hand lingering on Kyle's arm.

"What do you want?" Kyle demanded, making no attempt to explain or even look guilty.

I lifted the reports, my hand trembling slightly. "The quarterly territorial assessments. I thought you'd want to see them."

"Leave them," he said coldly. "And next time, knock."

As I placed the papers on his desk, the scent hit me—vanilla and cedar, Kyle's distinctive Alpha scent, now mingled with Amanda's on the surface of her skin. The scent he had told me for years repelled him when it came from me.

"Is there anything else?" he asked, impatience evident in his tone.

"No," I managed, backing toward the door. "Nothing at all."

As I closed the door, I heard him murmur to Amanda, "Where were we?"

Lyra's rage and pain echoed through me. *He's been lying to us all along.*

* * *

I waited until dinner to confront him. Kyle sat at the head of our dining table, scrolling through his phone, barely acknowledging my presence as I set down my fork with deliberate calm.

"If my scent repels you so much," I began, my voice steadier than I felt, "perhaps we should consider breaking our bond."

Kyle's head snapped up, his eyes narrowing. "What are you talking about?"

"I saw you with Amanda today," I said. "And during the run. If you've found your true mate, just say so. The Moon Goddess allows for—"

A harsh laugh cut me off. "The Moon Goddess?" Kyle leaned forward, his Alpha aura suddenly pressing down on me like a physical weight. "Let me make something clear, Sophia. I didn't mate you because of some divine intervention."

The pressure of his Alpha tone made it hard to breathe. "Then why—"

"Territory," he said simply, a smirk playing at his lips. "Your father's pack had what I needed. You were the price of admission."

Lyra howled in anguish within me, the pain of his admission cutting deeper than any physical wound.

"And now?" I whispered.

"Now I have what I need," he said, rising from the table. "And you've served your purpose."

As he walked away, leaving me alone at the table, the truth I'd been denying for three years finally crystallized: I had never been his Luna—I had only been his stepping stone.
