For years, she poured herself into being the perfect wife—organic meals, handmade clothes, and a smile worn thin through sleepless nights—while he sneered at her postpartum body and compared her to Instagram models. Chapter 1

I spent every waking hour making our home look like a Pinterest dream. I baked organic baby food, sewed matching family outfits, and greeted him at the door with a smile, even when I hadn't slept for forty-eight hours. But when my body changed after childbirth, my husband looked at my milk-stained shirt and asked, "Why can't you look like the fitness influencers online?" He thought I was trapped, a helpless mother dependent on his crumbs. He didn't know that the "helpless tradwife" he humiliated was actually the sole venture capitalist who secretly funded his entire tech startup. The day he brought his gym-bunny mistress into our nursery, I didn't cry. I froze his corporate accounts, served him divorce papers, and walked out into the sun. Enjoy your rented life, Mark. You just fired your biggest asset.

POV: Grace

The shrill cry from the bassinet ripped through the silence of the bedroom at 3:14 AM.

I sat up instantly, every muscle in my back locking into a painful knot. My eyes burned behind swollen lids, and my throat was so dry it felt raw. For four months, my life had been measured in ninety-minute increments of broken sleep.

I reached down to scoop Leo from his swaddle, murmuring soft reassurances against his hot forehead. He was red-faced, thrashing his tiny fists, his diaper heavy and leaking through his onesie.

Beside me, the mattress shifted with violent irritation.

Mark yanked the duvet over his shoulder, exhaling a sharp, ragged breath. "Grace, for God’s sake. Can’t you keep him quiet?"

"I’m changing him right now," I whispered, fumbling with the wipes in the dim glow of the nightlight. My hands shook from pure exhaustion. "He’s teething, Mark. He has a low fever."

"I don't need a medical update," he snapped, not even turning around. His voice was cold, clipped, and devoid of warmth. "I have a nine o'clock meeting with the regional directors. Take him downstairs."

I paused with the soiled diaper in my hand, staring at the broad curve of his back. "I’ve been up with him three times since midnight. Could you just hold him for five minutes while I wash my hands?"

"Grace, you don't have anywhere to be tomorrow," Mark said into his pillow, his tone dripping with condescension. "I do. Take him downstairs. Now."

The words struck like ice water. Swallowing the lump rising in my throat, I buttoned Leo into a clean sleeper, gathered him against my chest, and stepped out into the dark hallway.

By six in the morning, Leo had finally drifted off in the nursery swing. Instead of crawling back into bed, I dragged myself into the kitchen.

I made Mark’s favorite breakfast: soft scrambled eggs with chives, toasted sourdough, crispy bacon, and a pot of fresh pour-over coffee. I set the table with the linen napkins he preferred, placing the silverware in straight, even lines. If I kept everything perfect, I told myself, things would feel normal again.

When Mark came down the stairs at seven, he was freshly showered and impeccably dressed in his charcoal suit. He didn't look like a man who had been interrupted in the middle of the night.

He walked into the kitchen, his gaze sweeping over the spread on the island before landing on me.

His eyebrows pulled together in immediate distaste.

"What happened to you?" he asked, stopping short.

I looked down at myself. I hadn't brushed my hair; it was tangled into a rough bun on top of my head. My gray sweater had a crusted circle of dried spit-up across the left collarbone, and the dark purple bruises under my eyes looked like smudges of ink.

"I didn't have time to shower yet," I said, trying to offer him a small smile. "Leo was fussy until dawn. Here’s your coffee."

Mark didn't take the mug. He stood there, studying my face with a mixture of pity and annoyance that stung far worse than anger.

"You look like a wreck, Grace," he said flatly. "Is this how you're greeting the day now? Are you planning on walking out the front door looking like that?"

The ceramic mug felt heavy in my hands. "I just made you breakfast from scratch on two hours of sleep, Mark."

"And I appreciate that, but you used to take pride in your appearance," he replied smoothly, checking the silver watch on his wrist. "Motherhood isn't an excuse to completely let yourself go. It’s depressing to look at."

He grabbed a single piece of toast, took a quick sip of water from the tap, and picked up his leather briefcase from the counter.

"I'll grab coffee at the office," he added, turning toward the foyer. "Try to put yourself together before I get home tonight."

The front door clicked shut behind him, leaving the kitchen completely silent except for the hum of the refrigerator.

The day vanished in a blur of laundry, nursing, burping, and scrubbing counters. By ten that night, the house was dark again. Leo was finally down in his crib, and Mark had emerged from the master bathroom in clean sweatpants, smelling of sandalwood body wash.

He reclined on the living room sofa, his long legs stretched out on the ottoman, basking in the cool blue glow of his phone screen.

I filled two glasses of water in the kitchen and carried them into the living room. My lower back throbbed with every step, and my nursing bra cut painfully into my ribs.

As I approached the couch to hand him his glass, I glanced down at his screen.

He was scrolling through an Instagram feed. The video playing on his display showed a young fitness influencer named Chloe. She was standing in bright natural sunlight, wearing a matching lilac sports bra and shorts. Her waist was narrow and taut, her skin golden and flawless, free of a single stretch mark or blemish. She laughed at the camera, tossing her sleek ponytail before stepping into a gym.

Without a second thought, Mark’s thumb double-tapped the center of the screen.

A bright red heart flashed across her flat stomach.

I froze, the cold glass trembling in my hand.

Mark didn't notice me standing there. He flicked his thumb, moving on to another photo of the same girl posing by a pool, his thumb lingering on the screen before he tapped the heart again.

A sharp, hollow ache opened in my chest.

For months, he hadn't touched me. Every time I reached for him in bed, he claimed he was exhausted from work. Whenever I changed in front of him, he would avert his eyes or leave the room. I had convinced myself he was just stressed, that we were simply adjusting to the new reality of a newborn.

Seeing that bright red heart made the truth painfully obvious.
