Chapter 2

POV: Grace

The heat radiating off the clinic parking lot was suffocating, but it was nothing compared to the panic that had gripped me for the past seventy-two hours.

Leo’s fever had finally broken around dawn, leaving him limp, exhausted, and clinging to me like a small, fragile shadow. The pediatrician’s office had squeezed us into an emergency morning slot for a follow-up check.

Mark had promised he would come.

*I’ll meet you there at ten sharp,* he had told me over coffee the night before, sounding every bit the responsible father. *You shouldn't have to carry the heavy gear while you're running on empty.*

I stood by the clinic's heavy glass entrance, my phone buzzing against my palm.

*Mark: Emergency budget review just got pushed up. Can't step away. Handle the appointment and text me the doctor's notes after.*

A dull ache settled beneath my ribs. I stared at the screen, my thumb hovering over the keypad, but there was no point in typing an angry reply. He had already checked out.

I shoved the phone into the overflowing diaper bag hanging off my right shoulder. The strap dug painfully into my collarbone, slipping every time I shifted my weight. In my left hand, I gripped the diaper bag's secondary strap, while my other arm struggled to steer the bulky, heavy-duty stroller up the concrete ramp.

Leo whined softly from beneath the sunshade, his little face flushed and damp.

"Almost there, sweet boy," I muttered, my voice cracked and dry.

When I reached the heavy glass doors of the medical building, my foot caught on the metal threshold. My knee buckled under the uneven weight of the bags, and the stroller lurched forward toward the brick frame. Panic flared in my throat as I threw my hip against the frame to stop it, my sandals skidding across the slick tile.

Before the stroller could tip, the glass door swung wide from the inside.

A clean, steady hand gripped the stroller's handlebar, halting it instantly. Another hand caught my elbow, supporting my weight with effortless strength before my knees could hit the ground.

"Easy," a low, gentle voice said. "I've got you."

I gasped, looking up through strands of unwashed hair that had escaped my clip.

Standing in front of me was a tall man in a crisp white coat layered over a slate-blue button-down shirt. A stethoscope rested around his neck. He looked to be in his late twenties, with dark brown hair cut neatly around his ears, sharp cheekbones, and striking hazel eyes that took in my disheveled state not with disgust, but with quiet, immediate concern.

"Thank you," I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I'm sorry, the door was heavier than I thought."

"You don't need to apologize," he said softly.

He didn't let go of the stroller until he was certain I was balanced on my feet. Then, reaching into the pocket of his coat, he pulled out a small, unopened packet of tissues and offered them to me.

"Here," he said, his expression warm and attentive. "Take a second. You're inside now."

I realized then that sweat was dripping down the side of my face, mixing with the exhaustion etched into my skin. I took the packet with trembling fingers. "Thank you. We're here for Leo Miller's ten o'clock checkup."

The doctor smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling. "I know. I'm Dr. Ethan Cole. I've been reviewing Leo's chart from urgent care."

He didn't wait for me to struggle with the bags again. With smooth, natural efficiency, Dr. Cole hooked the strap of my heavy diaper bag over his own arm, took the stroller handles, and gestured toward the hallway.

"Room three is ready," he said, matching his pace to mine so I didn't feel rushed. "Let's get him out of the heat."

Inside the examination room, the cool air was an instant relief. Dr. Cole set my bag on the side counter and gently lifted Leo from the car seat. He handled my son with practiced tenderness, supporting the baby's neck while checking his temperature and listening to his chest. Leo, who usually screamed whenever a stranger approached, simply blinked up at him with watery blue eyes, calmed by the doctor's steady touch.

"His lungs sound clear," Ethan said, turning his head toward me while keeping one hand protectively on Leo's stomach. "The fever did its job fighting off the viral flare-up, but he’s mildly dehydrated. You did an incredible job managing his fluids at home, Grace."

Hearing my name spoken with genuine respect caused a strange, tight knot to form in my throat. I hadn't realized how long it had been since someone acknowledged the effort instead of pointing out the mess.

Before I could answer, my phone on the counter erupted into a loud, frantic ringtone.

The screen flashed with Mark's face—an incoming FaceTime call.

I flinched, instinctively reaching for it. "Sorry. It's my husband."

I swiped the green icon, holding the screen up to my face.

Mark appeared immediately. He was sitting in his air-conditioned corner office, his tie straight and his hair perfectly styled. There was no sign of an emergency meeting around him—just his pristine mahogany desk and a cup of takeout iced coffee.

"Grace, finally," Mark snapped, not bothering to greet me. "What did the pediatrician say? Did he write a prescription? I need the exact dosage numbers right now. I don't want you forgetting half the instructions like you did last month."

His sharp, condescending tone echoed clearly through the small examination room.

My face burned with humiliation. "Mark, we're in the middle of the exam—"

"Just hold the phone up to the doctor," Mark ordered, waving a dismissive hand at his camera. "Put him on. I don't have time to wait for you to stumble through an explanation later."

I froze, caught between the instinct to obey to keep the peace and the crushing shame of being treated like an incompetent child in front of Dr. Cole.

I turned the phone toward Ethan. He held out a long, lean hand, and I passed it to him.

Ethan took the phone smoothly from my fingers, his movements calm and decisive.

"Hey—what are you doing?" Mark's voice barked from the speaker.

Ethan brought the phone level with his own face. The warmth that had been in his hazel eyes moments ago vanished, replaced by an icy, unwavering intensity.

"I'd rather tell you myself," Ethan said, his voice cutting through the speaker with absolute authority.

Mark blinked on the screen, momentarily stunned into silence by the sudden shift. "Who the hell are you?"

"I am Dr. Ethan Cole, your son's pediatrician," Ethan replied coldly. "Leo is recovering from a severe viral spike that kept his mother awake for three straight nights monitoring his fever and hydration."

Mark cleared his throat, his defensive arrogance flaring back up. "Look, doctor, I pay the bills and I provide for this family. My wife is responsible for handling daytime appointments, but I need the facts."

Ethan didn't back down an inch. He held the screen steady, his gaze piercing directly into the camera.

"The facts are that your wife brought a sick infant through ninety-degree heat completely alone while carrying thirty pounds of gear," Ethan said, each word hitting with surgical precision. "If you want real-time updates and direct answers from me, you should be standing in this room."

"Excuse me?" Mark sputtered, his face turning red. "You don't know anything about my schedule—"

"It's your child too," Ethan interrupted smoothly.

Without giving Mark another second to argue, Ethan tapped the red button, ending the call instantly.

Silence fell over the room, thick and heavy.

Ethan handed the darkened phone back to me, his fingers brushing mine briefly. When he looked at me, the coldness in his eyes was gone, replaced once more by an open, steadfast reassurance that made the ground beneath me feel solid for the first time in months.

*It's your child too.*

The phrase echoed in my ears, shattering the fragile illusions I had built to justify Mark's neglect.

I looked at Dr. Cole's calm, handsome face, and a quiet, bittersweet smile broke across my lips—the first genuine release of tension I had felt since bringing Leo home.
