The wife he gave away Chapter 1

"Sign the divorce papers, Elena, or should I bring my mistress here and let her explain why you're being replaced?"

The words hit her like a slap, and for a second, Elena couldn't breathe.

She stood frozen in the doorway of the hotel suite, her hand still gripping the handle, her heart pounding so hard she thought everyone in the room could hear it. The text message that brought her here flashed through her mind again. "Adrian's in trouble. Come quick. Room 412, The Aldridge Hotel." No name, no explanation. Just panic, and she had run, she had actually run through the lobby in her work clothes, terrified something had happened to him.

Now she understood nothing had happened to him.

Everything had happened to her.

She'd walked in just as Adrian's mouth met Vanessa's, his hand sliding into the dark hair spilling over the silk robe, and the sound that left Elena's throat wasn't a word, it was something closer to pain.

Adrian pulled back slowly, no scrambling for an excuse, no panic, just a man mildly inconvenienced by being caught. He sat on the edge of the bed and looked at her with an expression she didn't recognize. Not guilt, not even shame. Just irritation, like she was a problem he hadn't planned for today.

And beside him, Vanessa Reed adjusted her robe and smiled.

Elena's stomach turned, she knew this person. She'd typed that name into hundreds of emails. She'd seen it on his calendar a hundred times. "Meeting with V. Reed." She'd never once thought to ask who V. Reed actually was, because why would she? Adrian's secretary. A name, not a person.

Now the name had a face, and the face was smiling at her.

"Elena." Adrian said it flatly, standing up, buttoning his shirt like he had all the time in the world. "You weren't supposed to see this like this."

"See what?" Her voice came out smaller than she wanted. "See what, Adrian?"

He didn't answer right away. There was a knock, then the door opened without waiting for a response, and two men in suits walked in mid-conversation about a contract, the words dying in their mouths the second they look the room. Elena recognized one of them, Marcus, from Adrian's board. The other she didn't know, business associates, walking straight into her humiliation like it had been scheduled.

"We've been over for a while," Adrian said, like he was reading from a contract. "You know that, I know that. Now am just being honest with you instead of dragging it out."

"Being honest?." Elena let out a laugh that hurt her own throat. "You text me that you're in danger, Adrian. You made me think something terrible happened, and I find you in a hotel room with—"

"With me," Vanessa said sweetly, cutting her off.

Elena turned to look at her properly for the first time. Vanessa was younger than her, maybe by two or three years, with the kind of beauty that looked effortless and definitely wasn't. She had dark hair pulled into a low bun, sharp eyes, and a calm, satisfied look on her face, like a woman who had already won and was simply waiting for everyone else to catch up.

"You must be exhausted," Vanessa continued, tilting her head. "Running here in the middle of the day. For nothing."

"This isn't nothing," Elena said, and her voice cracked on the last word.

"Elena." Adrian crossed the room and held something out to her. A thick envelope, she didn't need to open it to know what it was. "Sign these. Let's not make this messier than it has to be."

Her hands didn't move, she stared at the envelope like it might bite her.

"Six years," she said quietly. "Six years, Adrian."

"And you think I don't know that?" Something flickered across his face, gone before she could name it. "You think this is easy for me?"

"It looks pretty easy." Her eyes flicked to Vanessa, then back to him. "It looks like the easiest thing you've ever done."

Marcus cleared his throat behind her. The other man shifted his weight, eyes darting between Elena and Adrian like he was watching a car crash and he couldn't look away from. Elena felt her face heat with humiliation. They were standing right there watching and nobody had the decency to leave.

"Take the papers, Elena." Adrian's voice hardened. "I'm trying to be decent about this."

"Decent?." She finally took a step back instead of forward, putting distance between them like he might burn her if she got too close. "You call this decent?"

"I could've just disappeared," he said. "I could've let you find out some other way. Some uglier way, I'm giving you the chance to walk away with your dignity intact."

"My dignity," Elena repeated, and something in her chest cracked wide open. "You think I have any dignity left? You made me run here thinking you were hurt and I walked in on this. In front of your associates."

For a moment, something shifted in his eyes.maybe regret but it vanished as fast as it came, replaced by the cold, controlled expression she'd grown so used to over the last two years of their marriage.

"You couldn't even look at me these past few months," she said, and hot tears blurred her vision before she could blink them back. "You couldn't sit with me, you couldn't even hold me. Where were you?"

The room went silent. Even Vanessa's smile faltered, just slightly across the room, she lifted her champagne glass and took a slow, unhurried sip, watching over the rim like this was entertainment she'd paid good money for.

"You're rewriting everything," Adrian said tightly.

"Rewriting everything?" Elena's hands were shaking now. "I begged you to talk to me, to just be present but you disappeared into work, into meetings, into her, apparently."

"Don't, that's enough" Adrian warned, his jaw tightening.

"Don't what? Don't tell the truth in front of your friends?" She gestured at Marcus, at the other man, both of whom had now found great interest in the carpet. "They already know everything else, why not this too?"

Adrian stepped closer, lowering his voice like that would somehow make this private. "I tried, Elena. I tried for years, you think I wanted things to end up like this?"

"You didn't try." She shook her head, wiping at her face with the back of her hand, hating that she was crying in front of Vanessa, hating that her hands wouldn't stop trembling. "You stopped trying long ago, long before this."

"This isn't the place," Adrian said, glancing at the men by the door.

"You brought me to this place," Elena snapped. "You did this, not me."

He held the envelope out again, his arm steady, his face unreadable. "Sign it, Elena. Let's end this with whatever's left of our respect for each other."

She looked at the papers. Then at him. Then, despite everything, despite the humiliation burning through her chest, she shook her head.

"No."

Adrian blinked, clearly not expecting that. "No?"

"I'm not signing anything today." Her voice was quieter, but steadier than she expected. "Not like this. Not with her sitting there, not with your friends watching like this is some kind of show."

"Elena—"

"I deserve better than this." Her eyes burned into his. "I deserve better than signing papers in the hotel room you brought another woman to."

Adrian's mouth opened, maybe to argue, maybe to push the envelope into her hands anyway, but before he could say anything, Vanessa rose slowly from the bed, tightening the robe around herself, that same calm, satisfied smile creeping back across her face.

She walked toward Elena, unhurried, like she had nothing left to fear.

Then she placed a hand gently over her stomach.

"At least," Vanessa said softly, "Adrian's baby survived.”
