"Are you giving him the gift tonight?" Marjorie asked.

I kept one hand inside my clutch, my thumb resting on the embossed edge of the travel envelope. "After the speeches."

"You have been guarding that thing all evening. What is it?"

"Two first-class tickets to Greece."

Her eyebrows rose. "Diane. Those had to cost a fortune."

"Eight thousand dollars. I saved for five years."

I had shaved a little from the household allowance every month, repaired coats instead of replacing them, and skipped more lunches than I could count. Paul had talked about Santorini since our first anniversary. Tonight marked twenty-five years of marriage and his retirement from the law firm he had built from a rented office and one secondhand desk.

I wanted to give him the dream he never made time to take.

Richard, one of Paul's oldest partners, leaned across the table. "He couldn't have built Reynolds & Cole without you, Diane. I still remember when you gave up the gallery after Nathan was born."

"Someone had to keep the rest of life running," I said.

"Do you miss curating?" Marjorie asked.

I looked toward the stage, where Paul stood beneath a wash of white light accepting another round of applause.

"Sometimes."

The ballroom dimmed.

The emcee lifted a microphone. "Before we send Paul Reynolds into retirement, we put together a look back at the man who made this firm what it is."

A giant screen descended behind Paul.

The first photograph showed a company picnic ten years earlier. Paul stood beside a grill, smiling at the camera.

My chest tightened.

"I was standing next to him," I said.

Marjorie glanced at me. "What?"

"In the original picture. I was holding the plate."

The image ended abruptly at Paul's shoulder.

"Probably cropped for the screen," she said, though she sounded less certain than the words.

The next slide was Nathan's high school graduation. Paul and our son wore matching blue ties.

A gray blur floated at Nathan's right side.

I leaned forward. "That is my dress. They erased everything above my shoulder."

Marjorie stopped smiling.

Slide after slide followed.

Birthdays I had planned. Holiday dinners I had cooked. Firm galas where I had arranged the seating charts and soothed offended spouses. In one ski-lodge photograph, they cropped me out so badly that my hand remained reflected in the window, still holding Paul's cup of cocoa.

Another slide showed the firm's tenth-anniversary gala. I remembered that night because I had spent three days renegotiating the hotel contract after Paul changed venues at the last minute. In the original photograph, my hand rested on his shoulder. On the screen, he stood alone beside a champagne tower I had ordered.

Then came Nathan's thirteenth birthday. I had baked the cake because he hated fondant. Paul had arrived forty minutes late, taken one photograph, and returned to a client call. In the presentation, that single photograph became proof of an attentive father. I had been cropped out with the knife still in my hand.

The pattern was too careful to blame on formatting. Someone had reviewed these images one by one and decided the story worked better without me.

A chair scraped onstage.

Nathan stepped to the microphone.

He was twenty-four now, wearing the navy suit I had bought him after his first promotion.

"Dad, you sacrificed everything for this firm," he began. "You missed games, vacations, family dinners. But you built something that will outlast all of us."

Marjorie touched my arm. "Here it comes. He is going to thank you."

I wanted to believe her.

Nathan smiled toward his father. "But no one builds an empire alone. Someone was always there when things fell apart, someone who understood the pressure and kept Dad moving forward."

I gripped the edge of the table.

"I want to thank Heather for being Dad's true pillar through the hardest years of his career."

The spotlight swung three tables away.

Heather Shaw, Paul's executive assistant, sat in a fitted crimson dress with one hand pressed theatrically to her chest.

The room erupted in applause.

Marjorie whispered, "Oh my God."

Richard went rigid across from me.

Paul laughed into the microphone. "Get up here, Heather. You earned this too."

Heather glanced toward our table before she stood. The look lasted less than a second, but I saw it. Not surprise. Not embarrassment. Assessment. She wanted to know whether I would make a scene.

I remembered all the times she had stepped into my space under the excuse of helping Paul: choosing the wine for our anniversary dinner because she knew his taste, sending Nathan a birthday gift signed from both of them, correcting me once about how Paul took his coffee as if I had not made it for him every morning since law school. I had called it overfamiliarity because the alternative was uglier.

She climbed the stairs while two servers rolled out a three-tiered retirement cake.

"Paul, I shouldn't," she said, smiling at him.

"Nonsense."

He took her hand.

Not mine.

When the cake knife appeared, Paul covered Heather's fingers with his and guided the blade through the fondant while photographers snapped picture after picture.

"Diane, say something," Marjorie hissed.

"What would you like me to do? Throw champagne?"

"At least make him look at you."

I watched my husband feed his assistant the first bite of cake while my son applauded beside them.

Something inside me became very quiet.

No tears. No shaking. Just clarity.

I opened my clutch.

The white travel envelope sat beside my phone.

I opened the airline app.

Reservation: Miller-Reynolds. Passengers: 2.

I selected Paul's name.

Cancel passenger.

A warning appeared about the nonrefundable fee.

I pressed Confirm.

"What are you doing?" Marjorie asked.

"Fixing a mistake."

I zipped the clutch, pushed back my chair, and stood.

Richard glanced nervously toward the stage. "Maybe take a minute before you decide anything."

"I have taken twenty-five years."

The applause swelled again as Paul and Heather posed with Nathan between them, a perfect family portrait with one inconvenient person removed.

I looked at the three of them and finally understood the slideshow.

It was not an accident.

It was a preview of the life they had already built without me.

I picked up my coat.

"Diane?" Marjorie asked. "Where are you going?"

I looked toward the ballroom doors.

"I'm leaving."

"For the night?"
