Chapter 3

Damian kept one forearm against the doorframe, blocking the hall without touching me.

"I can prove the photos were staged," he said.

"Then play the unedited file."

"The raw archive is locked behind a physical cloud key in my office safe. I have the command feed, the contract, and the location logs. Let me take you there."

"Get into a car with the man who sold me for one hundred and eighty thousand dollars?"

"I quit the contract."

"After the check cleared. After the cameras had what Victor wanted."

His jaw tightened. He had no defense worth hearing.

I ducked beneath his arm and dropped the receiver into my clutch. "You are not the proof, Damian. You are part of the crime scene."

I left him in the doorway.

At one in the morning, Nora Keats threw a half-empty espresso cup into her wastebasket and leaned over the glass desk. The downtown traffic hummed twenty stories below her window.

Separation document NK-117 sat between us, illuminated by the harsh glare of her desk lamp.

I set the black earpiece next to it and played the audio file from my phone.

"Make her sign. Now." Victor's voice echoed off the law firm's glass walls.

Nora tapped her silver pen against her legal pad. "Illegal inducement. Coercion. Fraudulent transfer of assets. He is building a fortress out of felonies."

"He wants the North River warehouse," I said. "He wants the inventory inside it."

I pulled a folded bank statement from my bag and slid it over the separation papers. "Eight months ago. Three hundred and twenty thousand dollars from my mother's estate."

Nora scanned the highlighted row. "You marked it as structural repairs for the gallery."

"Victor handled the contractor payments," I said. "He filed the new deed under VK Holdings."

"This is not a sudden grab," Nora said, her eyes narrowing. "This is premeditated asset stripping. But this audio snippet is not enough to stop the six o'clock email."

"Damian has the rest."

"Damian is a paid operative who lied to you for months," Nora said. "If Victor reaches the trustees first, they will freeze your authority before we can obtain emergency relief. One audio fragment will not outweigh eight photographs."

"Then I will find the rest."

Nora checked her watch. "You have five hours."

My phone buzzed against the glass desk.

A video call request flashed on the screen. The caller ID read Victor.

I swiped to accept.

Victor's face filled the screen, but the background caught my attention instantly. Corrugated steel. Yellow safety bollards.

He was standing in front of the North River warehouse.

"The board has not seen the Carlyle pictures yet," Victor said, his voice echoing in the empty street. "But the new security team just processed a lock-change authorization from VK Holdings."

"You have no legal right to that building," I said.

"I have a deed," Victor replied smoothly. He shifted the camera angle.

The lens focused on the metal shelving unit just inside the loading bay. My mother's wooden brush box sat on the top tier. Victor reached out, running his index finger along the brass latch.

"Careful, Sloane," he murmured. "Assets get damaged during transitions."

The camera zoomed in on the largest restoration brush. The letters S.H. were gouged into the worn handle, carved by my own hands when I was seventeen.

Victor tapped the bristles, treating a priceless family heirloom like a cheap pawnshop negotiation.

"Step away from the shelf," I warned.

"Sign the waiver," Victor countered. "Or I start tossing old junk into the dumpster to make room for my new inventory."

I ended the call.

Nora stood up. "Do not go down there. He wants a confrontation on his territory."

"He should not touch my mother's things," I said.

I grabbed the copies of the bank transfers and shoved them into my bag.

"Open a property-theft incident with dispatch and send the case number to my phone," I told her, already walking toward the elevator. "If he moves the inventory, I want police notified before he can rewrite the story."

"Sloane, wait," Nora called out. "You are playing his game."

"I am changing the rules," I said, hitting the lobby button.

The streetlights flickered over the cracked pavement outside the North River warehouse. The neighborhood was dead quiet, save for the distant wail of a siren.

I stepped out of my cab and walked straight toward the loading bay.

A man in a tactical vest blocked the entrance. He held a clipboard in one hand and a radio in the other.

My brass nameplate lay snapped in half on the concrete near his boots. A fresh white sticker covered the electronic lock interface, displaying a temporary authorization code: 4419.

I raised my phone and photographed the broken nameplate, the sticker, and the guard's face.

"Private property," the guard grunted, stepping forward to block the keypad.

"My property," I corrected. "Move aside."

"VK Holdings only," the guard said, crossing his arms.

Across the narrow street, a silver sedan idled in the shadows. The exhaust plumed into the cold night air. Victor was watching from the driver's seat.

Footsteps scraped against the gravel behind me.

Damian stepped out from the blind spot near the dumpsters. He wore the same dark suit from the museum, but his tie was gone.

In his right hand, he held a black hard drive case.

"It is half the audio," Damian said, stopping ten feet away. "And my GPS location logs for the last seventy-two hours."

"Put it on the ground," I ordered.

He lowered his arm but did not drop the case. "Sloane, they changed the alarm grid. If you punch your old code, it triggers a silent panic alert to the precinct."

"I said put it on the ground and do not step any closer."

"You need this drive," Damian insisted. "It proves he tracked you."

"I do not need anything from you."

"You cannot fight him alone."

"I am not fighting him," I said. "I am destroying him."

A loud mechanical grinding noise drowned out his reply.

The heavy steel roll-up door rattled in its tracks, rising steadily from the concrete floor. Harsh fluorescent light spilled out onto the pavement, casting long shadows across our feet.

Victor stood just inside the threshold.

He rested his hand directly over my mother's open brush box.

He looked past me, fixing his gaze on the guard.

"Get her in the shot too," Victor said.
