Chapter 4

The heavy steel roll-up door rose to waist height, spilling harsh white light onto the pavement.

I stepped directly into the glare, leveling my phone camera at the guard's chest.

"October twelfth, one-forty in the morning," I said, my voice projecting over the mechanical grind of the metal tracks. "VK Holdings temporary authorization code 4419."

"Put the phone away," the guard grunted, raising his clipboard to block the lens.

"I hold forty-eight percent equity in the Hart and Kline Gallery," I stated, keeping the camera steady. "The three-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-dollar structural repair fund for this building came directly from my mother's estate."

Victor stepped into the frame, his shadow cutting across the pavement. "This is a corporate audit, Sloane. Turn that off."

I pulled the folded bank transfer page from my bag and thrust it inches from the camera. The highlighted figures blocked Victor's face.

Damian moved into my peripheral vision. He crouched, setting the black hard drive case on the concrete right at the tip of my shoe. He retreated exactly three paces backward into the dark.

I did not look at him.

"Another hired investigator is willing to submit evidence," I told the recording, aiming the phone back at Victor. "His motives will be reviewed by the court."

Victor's jaw tightened. He pivoted away from the camera glare and marched straight for the metal shelving unit inside the bay. His hand clamped over the brass latch of my mother's wooden brush box.

"Warehouse assets fall under company inventory," Victor said, his fingers scraping the worn wood. "We tag everything."

I shoved my shoulder between him and the shelf, blocking his arm.

"Record this," I ordered the guard. "He is touching a personal family heirloom."

Victor leaned in close, his breath warm against my cheek.

"Don't play the martyr in front of strange men," he whispered.

The words mirrored eighteen months of quiet, suffocating dinners where he criticized my posture, my tone, my silence. He wanted me to snap. He wanted me to scream and validate the crazy-wife narrative he was building for the board.

Instead of the familiar burn of rage, a cold, absolute calm washed over me.

I smiled.

Victor blinked, his hand dropping from the latch. The polite, empty curve of my lips threw him off balance.

Red and blue lights flashed against the corrugated steel walls. A police cruiser pulled up to the curb, tires crunching over the loose gravel.

Two officers stepped out, hands resting near their belts.

"Dispatch got a silent panic alert," the taller officer announced. "Everyone step outside the bay."

I kept the camera running while the second officer photographed the broken nameplate and altered keypad. He read the temporary code into his body camera, then asked the guard who had authorized the lock change. The guard glanced toward Victor's sedan before admitting the order had arrived by email from Mara Ellison's office.

"Preserve that message," I said. "Do not forward it. Export the header and keep the original device in your custody."

The officer gave me a measured look, then nodded to the guard. "You heard her. No deletions."

I handed the brush box inventory number, the new lock code, and my phone with Victor's recorded threat to Nora. She had just parked her sedan behind the squad car.

"File the emergency property petition," I told her, loud enough for the officers to hear. "Document attempted conversion of disputed assets."

Victor straightened his tie, his face wiped clean of any frustration. "A misunderstanding between spouses, officers. We are leaving."

He turned and walked toward his silver sedan, not looking back.

Nora plugged Damian's hard drive into her laptop on the hood of her car. The streetlights overhead buzzed a low, erratic hum.

I tapped the spacebar.

"Make her sign. Now." Victor's voice played through the laptop speakers, followed by the rustle of fabric.

Nora scrolled through the file directory. "It is just the audio from the terrace to the lounge. There is no employment contract here. No wire transfer logs."

I turned to Damian. He stood by the chain-link fence, hands shoved deep in his pockets.

"Where is the rest?" I asked.

"In my office safe," Damian answered. "I can take you there right now."

A bitter laugh escaped my throat. "Is it just another room you staged?"

Damian pulled his car keys from his pocket and placed them flat on the roof of Nora's sedan. The metal jingled against the steel.

"I will drive," Damian said, looking at Nora. "You follow us in this car. Record the entire trip."

He looked back at me. "I want one chance to explain."

"I only want the files," I replied. "Keep a six-foot distance from me at all times."

Damian nodded once. He did not ask for the keys back. He turned and walked down the street toward his parked SUV.

Damian's office sat on the second floor of a brick walk-up above a closed diner. The room smelled of old paper and dust. A dented metal desk dominated the center space, flanked by a tall steel evidence cabinet. On the far wall, a cheap plastic clock was dead, the hands frozen at two-seventeen.

I stopped at the threshold, my hand resting on the doorframe.

"Go in first," I told Nora.

She stepped past me, her phone already recording.

Damian knelt in front of a heavy floor safe tucked beneath the window. He spun the dial, the tumblers clicking rapidly in the quiet room.

He pulled the heavy steel door open.

He reached inside, his hand hovering over the bottom shelf.

His shoulders went rigid.

"It is gone," Damian said, his voice entirely hollow.

I stepped into the room, keeping my distance. "What do you mean, it is gone?"

Damian stood up and backed away from the safe, raising both hands to show they were empty.

Nora leaned over the open steel box and aimed her phone flashlight inside. "There is no contract folder here."

She reached in and pulled out a small, white rectangle. A severed black memory card tumbled out with it, bouncing off the metal floor.

Nora handed me the white card.

It was Victor Kline's embossed business card.

I flipped it over.

Scrawled across the back in black ink was a single line of text: She signs by Friday, or you lose more than the money.
