Chapter 2

Lyra sat on the damp stone bench as if it were a royal throne. I remained near the wall, rubbing my burned wrists and watching for the knife she might hide beneath her cloak.

“Start with the ravine,” she said.

I told her. I described finding Rowan caught in a hunter’s trap, delirious from silver and blood loss. I told her how I had used my own teeth to pull barbs from his back, how he had woken without a memory, and how we had survived by moving between abandoned cabins. I admitted that our attraction had been immediate, but I had resisted until he could stand, think clearly, and choose me as an equal.

“He chose you more than once?” she asked.

“Every day.”

“And tonight he asked you to become his mistress.”

The word scraped my skin. “Yes.”

Lyra leaned back. “Disappointing.”

“You don’t believe him?”

“My wolf can smell lies. Rowan reeked of them in the hall.” She shrugged. “Besides, I don’t love him. I selected him from the alliance portraits because he was the only Alpha who did not look like a damp boot.”

A startled laugh escaped me. It hurt my chest, but it was the first sound I had made that did not feel broken.

Lyra’s mouth curved. Then her expression changed. She stared at the shape of my eyes, my cheekbones, and the silver-gray streak near my temple.

She reached out, stopped before touching me, and lowered her hand. “How old are you?”

“Twenty.”

“Where were you born?”

“I don’t know. My first memory is an old rogue named Hester finding me near the southern marshes. She raised me until fever took her.”

Lyra went very still. “Did she leave you anything?”

I pulled a thin chain from beneath my torn dress. A crescent-shaped piece of white metal hung from it. I had always thought it was worthless because no trader could identify the material.

Lyra inhaled sharply.

Before I could question her, she stood. “My cousin’s court has a law. Anyone who insults a royal engagement may be claimed for judgment by the offended royal pack.”

Fear returned. “You said you’d help me.”

“I am helping. Tomorrow, my Beta will demand custody of you. Rowan will surrender you because refusing us would ruin the alliance he values more than his spine.”

“And then?”

“Then you leave this place alive.”

She would say no more.

At sunrise, servants brought food, clean clothes, and salve. At midmorning, the dungeon filled with boots. Rowan came first, flanked by his council. Lyra followed with four warriors wearing the white-and-blue crest of Moonridge.

The man beside her made the narrow corridor feel smaller.

He was taller than Rowan, with sun-brown skin, dark auburn hair tied at his nape, and a scar cutting through one eyebrow. His black uniform bore a Beta’s silver clasp. Strength sat differently on him—not displayed, simply present. When his amber eyes found mine, the air seemed to tighten.

My wounded wolf lifted her head.

Not mate, she whispered faintly.

But important.

“This is Beta Kael Ashbourne,” Lyra announced. “He will escort the prisoner to royal judgment.”

Kael’s gaze dropped to my wrists. His jaw flexed when he saw the burns.

Rowan noticed. “The restraints are standard.”

“For rabid wolves,” Kael said. His voice was low and rough. “Is she rabid?”

“She bewitched an Alpha.”

Kael looked at Rowan as if examining something stuck to his boot. “That sounds like an Alpha problem.”

Lyra hid a smile.

Rowan entered my cell. For the audience behind him, his touch was formal as he fastened ordinary iron cuffs around my hands. Under his breath, he said, “Tell them you want to remain. I can still arrange what we discussed.”

My stomach turned.

Loud enough for everyone, I replied, “I would rather face royal execution than spend another night under your surveilliance.”

Kael’s eyes flashed.

Rowan shoved me toward him. “Take her.”

Kael caught me before I fell. One arm wrapped around my waist, solid and warm. The contact sent a startling pulse through my body. I had been cold since the bond broke, but heat gathered where his palm rested against my side.

He released me immediately. “Can you walk?”

“Yes.”

Outside, a covered carriage waited with six mounted guards. Lyra did not join us. She squeezed my hand once and said, “Trust Kael.”

I had trusted the wrong man so completely that the word felt dangerous.

We traveled north rather than east.

By afternoon, I noticed the mountains were on the wrong side of the road. “Moonridge is east.”

Kael rode beside the carriage window. “We are not going to Moonridge.”

Panic tightened my throat. “Where are you taking me?”

“To people who need to see you.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only one I’m authorized to give until we cross the old boundary.”

I reached for the door. Kael’s hand shot through the window and closed around my wrist—not painfully, but with impossible speed.

“Jumping from a moving carriage will reopen your bond wound,” he said.

“How do you know about it?”

“I can hear your heartbeat stutter every time the road jolts.” His grip loosened. His thumb rested over my pulse. “I’m not taking you somewhere to be hurt.”

I looked at his scar, his broad hand, and the steady patience in his eyes. “Rowan said he would protect me too.”

Something fierce moved across Kael’s face. “Then I understand why promises mean nothing to you.”

He released me.

Near dusk, the escort entered a pine forest where mist crowded between the trunks. The horses became restless. Kael raised a fist, stopping the column.

The first arrow struck our driver through the shoulder.

Rogues burst from the fog.

The carriage overturned. I hit the roof, glass cutting my forearm. A wolf tore the door away and lunged inside. I kicked its muzzle, but my damaged bond sent agony through my chest. Teeth snapped inches from my face.

A massive russet wolf slammed into my attacker.

Kael.

He fought like controlled fire. He broke one rogue’s leg, hurled another into a tree, and placed his body between me and every blade. When a fighter came from behind, I grabbed the fallen driver’s knife and drove it into the attacker’s thigh.

Kael shifted back, naked except for blood and shadows, and caught the man by the throat.

“Who sent you?”

The rogue laughed. “Nightfang pays well.”

Rowan had not merely surrendered me. He had arranged to silence me.

Kael’s rage changed the air. He ended the attack quickly, then knelt beside me while his surviving guards secured the road. Blood ran down his ribs from a deep claw wound.

“You’re hurt,” I said.

“So are you.”

He tore a strip from a blanket and wrapped my arm first. His fingers were careful, though his entire body still vibrated with battle instinct. I could not stop looking at the blood tracking over his muscles. It should have frightened me. Instead, my breath caught with a raw awareness I had no right to feel.

His nostrils flared.

He smelled it.

Color darkened his eyes, but he only tied the bandage and sat back. “You just survived an ambush. Your body is flooded with instinct. I won’t mistake that for permission.”

The respect in those words affected me.

I touched the wound on Kael’s side. “Then don’t mistake gratitude for weakness either. Let me help you.”

His abdominal muscles tightened beneath my fingertips. Our eyes met. Heat traveled through the contact, deep and inexplicable.

He covered my hand with his.

For several breaths, neither of us moved.

Then a guard called that fresh horses were ready.

Kael withdrew, but the warmth of him remained in my palm.

“We ride through the night,” he said. “After that, no Nightfang assassin will reach you.”

I believed him—not because he demanded trust, but because he had bled before asking for it.
