Chapter 3

The white towers appeared at dawn, rising from the mountains like pieces of the moon. Thousands of acres of forest surrounded silver walls. Wolves patrolled the ridges, but none challenged Kael after seeing the crest on his cloak.

“This is Silvercrest,” I whispered.

Every rogue knew the name. Silvercrest was not merely a pack. It was the royal seat, the neutral power that maintained the sacred roads, settled wars between Alphas, and guarded the temples where pack blessings were renewed.

Kael rode close enough that his knee brushed mine. After the ambush, the carriage had been abandoned, and he had placed me on his horse in front of him. His arm had circled my waist for hours. Each rise and fall of the animal pressed my back to his chest. He never took advantage, never let his hand wander, yet awareness had built between us until my skin felt too tight.

“Why do you bring me here?” I asked.

He looked toward the gates. “You deserve to hear the answer from them.”

I should have been angry. Instead, exhaustion made me lean into him. His breath touched my ear.

“Are you in pain?” he asked.

“Yes.”

His arm tightened. “We’re almost there.”

The gates opened without ceremony. Lyra waited in the courtyard, having raced ahead by the eastern moon-path after sending us north as a decoy. She wore riding clothes and a triumphant expression.

“You took long enough,” she called.

“We were ambushed,” Kael replied.

Lyra’s smile vanished. “Nightfang?”

“The survivor named them.”

She looked ready to march south and burn Rowan’s hall herself.

Servants and guards gathered as Kael helped me dismount. His hands closed around my waist. For one suspended moment, I slid down the hard length of his body. My feet touched the ground, but he did not release me until he was certain I could stand.

A woman appeared at the top of the palace steps.

She wore no crown, only a pale dress and a shawl around narrow shoulders. Her hair was silver-black. Her face was thin with illness, yet the curve of her mouth, the angle of her cheekbones, and the unusual gray streak at her temple mirrored mine.

The world tilted.

She stared at me. A broken sound escaped her.

Then she ran.

“Your Majesty,” guards protested.

She ignored them and crossed the courtyard barefoot. When she reached me, she stopped as though terrified that touching me would make me vanish.

Her eyes dropped to the pendant at my throat.

“Where did you get that?”

“It has always been mine.”

Her hand rose. I let her turn the crescent seal over. On the back, beneath decades of dirt, a tiny nine-tailed wolf had been engraved.

The woman collapsed against me.

“My baby,” she sobbed.

Her grief entered my body like a remembered song. My wolf surged forward, not with fear, but recognition. Mother, Willow breathed.

Strong arms caught us both. A man with silver at his temples had descended the steps without my noticing. Power rolled from him so intensely that every nearby wolf bowed. His gold eyes moved over my face, then closed as if the sight wounded him.

“I am Aldric Silvercrest,” he said hoarsely. “Wolf King of the united packs.”

The woman clung to me. “Selene. I am Selene.”

I could barely breathe. “Queen Selene.”

“Your mother,” she said.

The courtyard dropped to one knee.

Everyone except Kael.

He stood behind me, close enough to catch me if I fell, his expression quiet and watchful.

Inside the palace, royal healers took blood from my palm and placed it on an obsidian moonstone. The stone blazed white. Hidden writing appeared across the crescent pendant: Elara, first daughter of the Silver Crown, born beneath the Nine-Moon Convergence.

Mara had been the name Hester gave me because I could not remember another.

My true name was Elara.

Lyra sat beside me while the healers repeated the test twice. “My mother is King Aldric’s younger sister,” she explained. “Queen Selene is my aunt. I visited this palace every summer. When I saw you, I thought grief had made me imagine the resemblance.”

“You chose Rowan because he was handsome,” I said faintly.

“It was not my finest political analysis.”

Despite everything, I laughed.

The laugh became a sob.

Queen Selene wrapped me in her arms. Her scent—moonflower and clean snow—made an empty place inside me ache. I had spent twenty years believing no one had searched for me. Yet portraits covered the private solar: a dark-haired infant wearing my pendant, sketches of how she might look at five, ten, fifteen, and twenty. Maps were marked with failed searches. Chests held untouched birthday gifts.

My father stood at the window, shoulders rigid. “We will explain everything. We will answer every question. And then Nightfang will answer ours.”

At Rowan’s name, the bond wound twisted.

Kael moved before anyone else. He knelt in front of my chair and offered his hand without touching me. I took it.

Warmth spread up my arm. The pain eased.

The healers exchanged startled looks.

“What is that?” I asked.

The eldest healer frowned. “Resonance. Rare, but not impossible between wolves whose spirits are compatible.”

Kael tried to pull away. My fingers tightened around his.

My father’s gaze landed on our joined hands, but he said nothing.

A messenger entered and whispered to him. Aldric’s expression hardened.

“What happened?” I asked.

He hesitated.

“No more secrets.” My voice sounded new to me—not louder, but carrying enough command that the room stilled. “Tell me.”

“Nightfang claims you died during a rogue ambush,” he said. “Rowan has sent formal condolences to Moonridge and requested that his engagement to Lyra proceed without delay.”

The coward had tried to murder me, then buried me in a letter.

A terrible calm settled over me.

I looked down at the royal seal glowing against my chest. I remembered chains, laughter, and Rowan’s hand on my mouth as he proposed a hidden life.

“Let him believe I’m dead,” I said.

Lyra’s smile returned, sharp as a blade. “I was hoping you would say that.”

Queen Selene held me closer. “You have nothing to prove, daughter. We can destroy him by decree.”

“No.” I met my father’s golden eyes, then Kael’s amber ones. “He called me powerless because he thought no one would punish him for hurting a rogue. If you crush him for me, he will blame royal strength. I want him to face the woman he discarded.”

Kael’s thumb moved once over my knuckles. The restrained contact sent a pulse through my chest, not painful this time.

“What do you want?” he asked.

I thought of Rowan lifting a cup at his wedding feast, certain he had traded a nameless woman for a crown.

“I want him to climb as high as possible,” I said. “Then I want him to learn whose heart he broke to get there.”
