The Rogue He Rejected Became His Queen Chapter 1

Only that morning, I had believed I was arriving to become his Luna.

Instead, Alpha Rowan Blackthorn called me a liar, a seductress, and a rogue whore.

The man I had saved raised his hand and rejected me before an entire pack.

The mate bond tore through my chest like a hook dragged between my ribs.

A princess stood beside him in the place meant for me.

Then he ordered his guards to throw me underground.

“I, Rowan Blackthorn, Alpha of the Nightfang Pack, reject you, Mara, as my mate.”

His voice rang beneath the vaulted stone ceiling. Hundreds of wolves watched from the tiers of the ceremonial hall, their eyes bright with curiosity and contempt. Beside Rowan stood a woman in silver silk, a moonstone crown resting over her dark hair. Her scent carried cedar, winter roses, and the unmistakable strength of royal blood.

My knees struck the floor.

Pain exploded behind my breastbone. My wolf, Willow, screamed inside me and clawed at the walls of my mind. Three nights ago, beneath a full moon, Rowan and I had begun forming our bond. We had not completed the marking, but our souls had touched. I had felt his hunger, his loneliness, the fierce tenderness he hid beneath his temper.

Now that connection ripped apart fiber by fiber.

“Say you accept,” Rowan commanded.

I tasted blood. “You said this would be our mating ceremony.”

A murmur moved through the hall.

Rowan’s jaw tightened. He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen—black hair swept from a hard face, broad shoulders dressed in ceremonial leather, gray eyes like storm clouds. Four months ago, I had found him half-dead beside a ravine with silver embedded in his spine. He had remembered nothing, not even his name. I had shared my last food with him, stolen medicine from hunters, and slept in wolf form across his body to keep him alive through a blizzard.

He had called me his miracle.

He had kissed me as though I were the only home he wanted.

Then our bond awakened his memory.

He remembered being an Alpha. He remembered Nightfang. He promised to bring me here and place a Luna’s crown on my head.

Instead, he turned toward the royal woman. “Princess Lyra, this rogue found me while I was vulnerable. She used herbs and false bond magic to confuse me. I was not myself.”

The lie hurt worse than the rejection.

“I carried you for three miles after the silver trap,” I whispered.

His gaze met mine for one brutal second. Heat still sparked across my skin, a dying echo of what we had been. Then he looked away.

“She admits she had me alone,” he announced.

Laughter broke out among his elders.

My humiliation fed the pain. Every wolf in the hall could smell my grief, my blood, and the sweet scent of a broken bond. The princess did not laugh. She studied me with unsettling intensity, her pale green eyes fixed on my face as if she had seen a ghost.

“Accept,” Rowan repeated more softly.

If I refused, the bond would keep tearing until one of us went mad. He knew it. He was making me finish the weapon he had driven into me.

“I, Mara…” My voice shook, but I forced myself upright. I would not crawl for him. “I accept your rejection.”

The last thread snapped.

Darkness swallowed the edges of my vision. I remained standing long enough to see relief cross Rowan’s face—and long enough to hate him for it.

“Take her away,” he said.

Two guards seized my arms. My bare feet dragged over the polished floor. I heard Princess Lyra ask, “What punishment does your law demand?”

“Imprisonment until your family decides whether her insult requires blood,” Rowan answered.

He made me sound dangerous.

The dungeon lay beneath the western tower, wet with underground seepage. The guards chained silver-lined cuffs around my wrists and left me on a stone bench. The metal burned my skin. My wolf whimpered, too wounded to help me shift.

Hours passed. I counted drops of water. I remembered Rowan feverish in my arms, his face buried against my throat as he promised, “When I know who I am, I’ll still choose you.”

Footsteps came after midnight.

Rowan dismissed the jailer and entered carrying a lantern. He had removed his ceremonial coat. His shirt clung to the powerful body I had washed, bandaged, and warmed with mine. Against my will, my pulse jumped. The broken bond had not killed desire; it had poisoned it.

He crouched outside the bars. “Mara, I had no choice.”

“You had several. You chose the one that put me in chains.”

“Lyra’s father commands twenty thousand wolves. If I humiliated his daughter, my people would starve or die in war.”

“So you humiliated me instead.”

“I can protect you.” He unlocked the cell and stepped inside. Runes briefly glowed around the walls. “This chamber was warded for private interrogations. No scent, sound, or bond can escape it.”

Cold understanding slid through me. “Why are you telling me?”

He came closer. His heat reached me before his hands did. Every instinct that had once recognized him as mine surged stupidly awake. My wolf pressed against my mind, wounded and yearning. Rowan touched my cheek with the backs of his fingers.

“I’ll marry Lyra,” he said. “But I don’t have to give you up.”

For one breath, I could not speak.

“You want me to be your secret.”

“You know what we are together.” His thumb brushed my lower lip. His pupils widened at my scent. “The rejection was public law. What’s between us is private. I can keep you in comfortable rooms. I can visit every night. Once Lyra gives me an heir, she won’t care where I sleep.”

I jerked my face away. “You rejected my soul and came back for my body.”

“Mara, be reasonable.”

I spat blood onto his white shirt.

His expression hardened.

“You are smaller than I ever imagined,” I said. “I found you nameless, bleeding, and helpless. I loved you when you had no rank. You recovered a title and proved you had no honor.”

He gripped the bars beside my head. “Careful.”

“Or what? You’ll reject me twice?”

The lantern flame shuddered with his anger. Desire and rage rolled from him in equal waves. Once, that power had made my knees weak. Now I saw what lived beneath it: fear wearing an Alpha’s face.

“Get out,” I said.

He stared at me, breathing hard. Then he backed away.

“You’ll change your mind after a few nights down here.”

“I would rather let the silver eat through my bones.”

He slammed the cell door and left.

I sagged against the wall, shaking until the ache dulled enough for me to breathe. I had no pack, no family, and no wolf strong enough to escape. Dawn might bring an execution order from Princess Lyra’s powerful clan.

More footsteps sounded before the night ended.

These were lighter.

Princess Lyra appeared beyond the bars without a guard. She wore a black cloak over her silver gown and carried Rowan’s master key.

Her strange green eyes moved over my face again.

“Tell me everything,” she said. “And do not leave out what that handsome coward offered you in this cell.”
