The antiseptic smell of the hospital clung to my nostrils as I walked down the corridor toward the general practitioner's office for my routine check-up. The fluorescent lights cast an unflattering glow over everything, making even the cheerful paintings on the walls look washed out and artificial. I checked my watch—I was early for once, which meant I could grab a coffee from the cafeteria afterward without rushing back to work. Turning the corner, I froze mid-step. There, outside the gynecology department, stood Damian. My Damian. My fiancé of three years. The man who had promised me forever. But he wasn't alone. His fingers were intertwined with those of a petite brunette I recognized as Valery Woods, the transfer student he'd mentioned working with occasionally.

Leaving My Possessive Fiancé Chapter 1

His free hand rested protectively on her slightly rounded belly, and the tender look in his eyes made my stomach twist into knots.

"It's okay, baby," he murmured, his voice carrying clearly in the quiet hallway. "I know you're scared, but the doctor said everything looks normal."

Valery leaned into him, her face turned up adoringly. "I just worry. What if Emily finds out? She's already making things so difficult for us."

I pressed myself against the wall, my heart thundering so loudly I was certain they would hear it. This couldn't be happening. Not my Damian. Not the man who had just last night whispered plans of our future children as we lay in bed.

"Don't worry about Emily," he replied, his voice hardening in a way I'd never heard before. "I'll make her pay for hurting you. She won't be a problem much longer."

My vision blurred as tears filled my eyes. Make me pay? For hurting her? What twisted version of reality was he living in?

I stumbled backward, desperate to escape before they spotted me. My appointment forgotten, I fled the hospital, gasping for breath in the parking lot as my entire world collapsed around me.

I spent the day in a daze, mechanically going through the motions at work while my mind replayed the scene at the hospital on an endless loop. By evening, I had composed myself enough to confront him. I deserved answers.

When Damian walked through our front door at seven, I was waiting in the living room, sitting rigidly on the edge of the sofa.

"We need to talk," I said, my voice steadier than I felt.

He glanced up, mild surprise crossing his features before he smiled—that same charming smile that had won me over three years ago. "Everything okay, babe? You look stressed."

"I saw you today. At the hospital. With Valery."

The smile slipped for just a second before he recovered, setting his keys down carefully on the side table. "Oh, that. I was just helping out a friend."

"A friend you called 'baby'? A friend you're apparently having a child with?"

His expression darkened. "You were spying on me?"

"I had an appointment. I wasn't spying—I saw you by accident." I stood up, needing to be on equal footing. "How long, Damian? How long have you been cheating on me?"

"You're overreacting," he said dismissively. "Valery's going through a difficult time. She needed someone to accompany her to an appointment. That's all."

"Stop lying to me!" My voice cracked. "I heard you. I saw you touching her stomach. I heard you promise to 'make me pay' for supposedly hurting her. What does that even mean?"

Instead of showing remorse, his eyes narrowed. "This is exactly the problem, Emily. Your jealousy is damaging our relationship. You twist everything into something sinister because you're insecure."

I stared at him in disbelief. "Are you seriously trying to gaslight me right now? I saw you with my own eyes!"

"What you think you saw," he corrected coldly. "Friends can be affectionate. Maybe if you weren't so controlling, I wouldn't need to hide innocent friendships from you."

The audacity of his lies made me physically ill. This wasn't the man I thought I knew. Had I ever really known him at all?

Two weeks later, I sat alone in a different examination room, staring at the ultrasound image the technician had just handed me.

"Congratulations," Dr. Sarah Chen said warmly. "You're approximately twelve weeks along. Everything looks healthy."

I traced the fuzzy outline of what would become my baby, tears welling in my eyes. Under different circumstances, this would have been the happiest moment of my life. Now, it felt like a cruel joke.

"Would you like me to call someone for you?" Dr. Chen asked gently, noticing my distress.

I shook my head, instinctively placing my hand protectively over my stomach. "No. No one can know about this. Not yet."

Something in my tone must have alerted her, because Dr. Chen sat down beside me, her clipboard set aside. "Emily, is everything alright at home?"

I couldn't bring myself to answer. If Damian knew about this pregnancy, he would never let me go. The baby would become another chain binding me to him, another tool for manipulation.

As I left the clinic with prenatal vitamins hidden in my purse, I made my decision. I would find a way out—for myself and for my child. Somehow, I would escape the web of lies Damian had woven around us. I just needed time to figure out how.

The Pierre Hotel smelled like gardenias and old money. I stood just inside the ballroom entrance and let the scene wash over me. Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across a hundred faces I didn't recognize and a dozen I did. Women in gowns that cost more than cars. Men in tuxedos that fit like they were born wearing them. Waiters gliding between clusters of conversation with trays of champagne so pale it looked like liquid gold. Six years ago, I would have been one of those waiters. I took a glass from a passing tray and didn't drink it. My steel-gray gown was custom Valentino, fitted so precisely it felt like armor. It cost more than my entire first-year scholarship at Columbia.
