I made one mistake - I saw something I was never meant to see. Now I belong to him. The most feared mafia king in the city. Cold. Ruthless. Untouchable. He says marrying me is the only way to keep me alive. A contract. A deal. A cage made of gold and blood. I should hate him for forcing me into his world of violence and secrets. I should fear the darkness in his eyes... and the power in his touch. But the closer I get to him, the more I see the man beneath the monster. The man who would burn the world to keep me safe. And the most terrifying part? I'm not sure I want to escape anymore.

The Mafia King's Reluctant Bride Chapter 1

The first thing I noticed was the blood.

Not the gun.

Not the men in black suits.

Not even the body collapsing to the wet pavement.

Just the blood - bright, violent red - mixing with rainwater and running toward my shoes like it was alive... like it was reaching for me.

My breath caught in my throat.

Don't scream.

Don't move.

Don't exist.

The alley smelled like iron and smoke. My back pressed against the cold brick wall as thunder rolled across the night sky. I had only come this way to avoid the storm.

One stupid shortcut.

One stupid decision.

And now I was watching a man die.

The gunshot echoed again in my head even though it had already happened. My ears rang. My fingers trembled around my phone, the screen still glowing with the time.

11:47 PM.

I should have been home.

Instead, I was hiding behind a dumpster, watching three men stand over a body like death itself had come to collect a debt.

"Dispose of it," one of them said.

His voice was low. Calm.

Like he had just ordered coffee.

Two men moved forward, grabbing the body under the arms. The dead man's head lolled to the side, eyes open, empty, staring straight at me.

My stomach twisted.

Don't look.

Don't make eye contact.

Don't be here.

I slowly slid my foot back, praying the sound of rain hitting metal would hide the noise.

Then my heel splashed into a shallow puddle.

Too loud.

Too obvious.

Too late.

One of the men froze.

"Boss," he said quietly. "We're not alone."

My heart stopped.

No. No. No.

Heavy footsteps turned toward me.

I squeezed my eyes shut, pressing myself harder into the shadows, as if I could melt into the wall.

Maybe they wouldn't see me.

Maybe-

"Come out."

The voice was closer now.

Colder.

Sharper.

I didn't move.

"Now."

My legs moved before my brain could argue. I stepped out slowly, hands shaking as I lifted them.

"I-I didn't see anything," I whispered.

Lightning flashed.

And that's when I saw him.

He stood slightly apart from the others, tall, broad shoulders cutting through the rain like it avoided him. Dark hair slicked back. Black coat hanging perfectly over his frame.

But it was his eyes that destroyed me.

Cold.

Calculating.

And locked completely onto me.

He stepped closer.

Once.

Twice.

My pulse slammed so hard I thought I might faint.

"What's your name?" he asked.

Not angry.

Not rushed.

Just... certain.

"Elena," I said before I could stop myself. "Elena Rossi."

Silence stretched between us. Rain pounded around us. Somewhere, thunder cracked again.

He studied my face like he was memorizing it. Like he was deciding something important.

Then his gaze dropped to my trembling hands.

"You saw," he said.

It wasn't a question.

Tears blurred my vision. "I won't tell anyone. I swear. I don't even know who you are."

A muscle ticked in his jaw.

Behind him, one of the men shifted. "Boss, we can't risk it."

Boss.

The word echoed in my skull.

Oh God.

Oh God.

I had walked into something I couldn't escape.

The man - the boss - stepped even closer. Close enough that I could smell his cologne under the rain. Dark. Expensive. Dangerous.

"Look at me, Elena."

I did.

I shouldn't have.

But I did.

His hand came up slowly, gripping my chin. Not rough. Not gentle. Just... controlled.

"You're lying," he said softly.

"I'm not-"

"You're terrified." His thumb brushed my lower lip, wiping away rain or tears - I couldn't tell. "And terrified people talk."

"I won't," I whispered.

His eyes searched mine, like he was digging under my skin.

Then he leaned closer, his lips near my ear.

"If I let you walk away," he murmured, "you belong to me."

My breath hitched.

"I don't mean tonight," he continued. "I mean forever."

My knees nearly gave out.

"I- I don't understand."

He pulled back, studying my face again. And for a split second, something flashed in his eyes.

Not softness.

But something close.

"Take her," he ordered suddenly.

Before I could react, strong hands grabbed my arms.

"No! Please! I won't tell anyone, I swear!"

I struggled, panic exploding through me. The alley spun. Rain soaked my hair, my clothes, my skin.

"Please!" I cried, looking straight at him. "Please don't kill me!"

He watched me silently.

Then he spoke.

"I'm not going to kill you."

Relief flooded me so fast I nearly collapsed.

Then he added-

"I'm going to marry you."

Everything inside me shattered.

"What?" I choked.

"You heard me."

"I don't even know you!"

"You don't need to."

I shook my head violently. "No. No, you're insane. I'm not marrying-"

He stepped closer, and the men holding me froze instantly.

"Listen carefully, Elena," he said quietly. "There are only two outcomes tonight."

My heart pounded so loud I could barely hear him.

"You disappear," he said. "Or you become untouchable."

My stomach twisted. "By... marrying you?"

"Yes."

"Why me?"

His gaze darkened.

"Because you saw my face," he said simply. "And now... you're mine to protect."

Mine.

The word wrapped around my lungs like chains.

Tears spilled down my cheeks. "You can't just decide that."

"I already did."

The certainty in his voice was terrifying.

"I have a life," I whispered.

"You had a life."

Pain stabbed through my chest.

"Please," I said again, softer this time. "Please don't do this."

For a moment, he just looked at me.

Then he reached forward and brushed my wet hair away from my face.

"You're shaking," he said quietly.

"Because I'm scared of you."

Something dark and unreadable moved across his expression.

"Good," he said.

Then he straightened.

"Bring her."

The car door opened behind me.

"No!" I twisted, kicking, fighting. "Let me go! Please!"

But they pushed me forward anyway.

As they forced me into the back seat, I looked up one last time.

He stood in the rain, completely unmoved by the storm.

Untouched.

Untouchable.

Watching me like I already belonged to him.

The door slammed shut.

And as the car pulled away, my last thought before panic swallowed me whole was-

I should have stayed home tonight.

Because now...

I was promised to a monster.

And something deep inside me whispered a truth I didn't want to face-

He wasn't going to let me go.

Ever.
