The Heiress In Disguise Chapter 1
The city lights glowed like stars trapped behind glass.
From the rooftop, Ava Montgomery watched the world move below her. Fast cars, loud music, people pretending their lives were perfect.
She knew that feeling well.
Pretending was something she had learned to do perfectly.
By day, she was the spoiled heiress everyone envied.
By night, she was the woman no one could ever catch.
The papers called her The Night Fox, the mysterious vigilante who stole secrets, not jewels.
Ava smiled under her black mask.
Her next target was only a few floors below.
The air was cold, brushing across her skin as she crouched on the edge.
Her dark clothes blended with the shadows.
The city stretched out around her, endless and bright.
Tonight, she was not the heiress who smiled for cameras.
She was something else. Someone freer.
She touched the side of her earpiece.
"Nina, I am in position," she whispered.
Nina's cheerful voice came through.
"Security cameras are looping for five minutes. You are clear to go, princess."
Ava rolled her eyes. "Do not call me that."
Nina laughed softly. "Fine. Queen of Secrets, then."
Ava smiled despite herself. "Better."
She hooked the rope to the ledge, tested it once, and jumped.
The rope tightened, swinging her smoothly through the cool air.
Her body moved with ease, every motion quiet and trained.
The window in front of her was dark, reflecting only her masked face.
She pressed a small device to the lock.
It clicked open with a soft sound.
She slipped inside the building.
The office was silent and smelled of metal and glass cleaner.
The walls glowed faintly from the city lights outside.
Every surface looked expensive, but too clean to feel real.
Ava moved carefully, her steps silent against the floor.
She reached the main computer.
Her heart beat a little faster.
This was what she came for.
Her father's company had partnered with Kane Enterprises before, and every rumor said something was wrong with the deals.
Tonight, she wanted proof.
She slid a small USB drive into the port.
Lines of data filled the screen.
Documents, bank records, contracts.
Ava smiled. "Got it."
Nina's voice came again. "Everything okay?"
"Perfect," Ava said quietly. "I am almost done."
"Be fast. You only have one minute left on the camera loop."
"Understood."
Ava moved quickly, copying files onto the drive.
She had done this before, but tonight felt different.
She did not know why until she heard a voice behind her.
"Stealing at midnight? That is bad manners, Miss Fox."
Ava froze.
The air in the room seemed to vanish.
She turned slowly toward the voice.
The lights came on, bright and golden.
A man stood by the doorway.
Tall. Calm. Dressed in a dark suit that fit perfectly.
His face was sharp, his eyes a cool gray that looked both alive and unreadable.
He was not shouting. He was not angry.
He was simply watching her.
Ava's pulse raced.
No one was supposed to be here.
"Who are you?" he asked.
She said nothing.
Her silence was her armor.
He tilted his head slightly.
"You are not going to speak? That is fine. I prefer quiet company."
He took a few slow steps forward.
The sound of his shoes against the floor was steady, controlled.
Ava took a step back.
Her mind calculated every exit, every risk.
"You can go," he said softly. "But next time you break into my office, at least bring me coffee."
Her breath caught.
"Your office?"
He smiled. "Leo Kane. CEO."
Her stomach dropped.
The name hit her like cold water.
Leo Kane.
The man her father respected and feared.
The man she had sworn to avoid.
She whispered under her breath, "Perfect."
He raised an eyebrow. "What was that?"
"Nothing," she said quickly, forcing calm into her voice.
Leo's eyes lingered on her mask.
"I could call security," he said, "but I will not."
Ava frowned slightly. "Why not?"
"Because I am curious," he said. "You risked a lot to come here. That means you want something more than money."
He was right.
She wanted truth.
She wanted revenge.
But he did not need to know that.
She smiled through the mask. "Curiosity can be dangerous, Mr. Kane."
"So can silence," he said quietly. "And yet, we both enjoy it."
Their eyes met for a long second.
Something strange passed between them.
Not trust. Not fear.
Something electric.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at it briefly, breaking the moment.
Ava moved fast.
She pulled the USB from the computer, stepped onto the window ledge, and looked back at him.
"See you around," she said.
He gave a faint smile. "I am counting on it."
She jumped into the night.
The cold air hit her face as she slid down the rope.
The city glowed beneath her, full of secrets and noise.
Her heart beat fast, a mix of fear and thrill.
It was dangerous, but she loved it.
When her feet touched the rooftop across the street, she let out a shaky breath.
Nina's voice came through again.
"Mission done?"
"Yes," Ava said, smiling. "Files secured."
"And?"
Ava hesitated. "And I met someone."
"Who?"
"Leo Kane."
There was silence, then Nina's shocked voice. "Wait, the Leo Kane? The billionaire?"
Ava nodded. "He caught me, but he did not stop me."
Nina gasped. "You think he knows who you are?"
"I do not think so," Ava said. "But he will remember me."
By morning, Ava was no longer The Night Fox.
She was back to being the perfect daughter.
Perfect hair, perfect dress, perfect smile.
Her family's breakfast table looked like a magazine photo.
Her mother arranged flowers. Her father read the newspaper.
"Another thief in the city," her father said. "These people have no respect for power."
Ava sipped her coffee. "Maybe they have a reason."
Her father looked up. "What did you say?"
"Nothing," Ava replied, smiling sweetly.
Her mother gave her a sharp look. "Ava, remember tonight's gala. The Kane family will be there. Be polite."
Ava froze. "The Kane family?"
"Yes," her mother said cheerfully. "You will finally meet Leo Kane. He is quite the businessman."
Ava's spoon hit her cup.
She kept her face calm, but her mind was racing.
She had already met him.
Just not as Ava Montgomery.
That night, the ballroom glittered with gold and glass.
Music floated through the air, soft and graceful.
Everywhere she looked, people smiled too wide, laughed too loud, and watched one another carefully.
Ava entered with quiet confidence.
Her red gown shimmered with each step.
Heads turned.
She smiled politely, though her mind was elsewhere.
She scanned the room until she saw him.
Leo Kane stood near the staircase, talking to a group of investors.
He looked calm and distant, like a man who always knew more than he said.
Then his eyes found hers.
They both froze.
He looked surprised, but only for a moment.
Then that faint, knowing smile appeared again.
Ava felt her pulse quicken.
She took a deep breath and lifted her chin.
For a second, the memory of last night flashed in her mind.
The same eyes watching her in the dark.
The same voice, quiet and curious.
She forced a small smile.
He did not know who she was, and she planned to keep it that way.
Her father's voice broke through her thoughts. "Ava, there you are. I want you to meet someone important."
She turned, pretending not to know who it was.
Leo Kane stood beside her father now, offering his hand.
"Miss Montgomery," he said politely.
Ava took his hand. "Mr. Kane."
Her father smiled proudly. "I am glad to see you two getting along already."
Ava smiled. "We have met before."
Leo's eyes flickered with surprise. "Have we?"
"Not formally," she said quickly. "At another event, perhaps."
He studied her for a moment. "Yes. Perhaps."
The polite smiles stayed, but both knew something unspoken had begun.
Later, when she slipped out to the balcony, she let the cold air fill her lungs.
She whispered to herself, "This just got complicated."

Faced with saving her or her sister, Jacob chose the latter without hesitation. Only in her final moments did Caroline realize his heart was never hers.
Reborn, she made a different choice, choosing power over love.

Darcie Miller survives elite St. Jude's Academy on sarcasm and invisibility, steering clear of golden quarterback Charles Sterling-her most ruthless tormentor. But when her father's bankruptcy hands everything to the Sterling family, Darcie faces a humiliating ultimatum: move into Charles's mansion as his live-in "academic handler" to keep him eligible for graduation.
Now the girl who despises him holds his future in her hands, and the boy who shattered her reputation might be the only one who truly sees her. In a world of cold marble and buried secrets, hate is about to catch fire-and obsession could burn them both.

On her wedding night at The Plaza Hotel, Clara went looking for her husband.
Instead, she found him in the dimly lit parking garage, passionately pinning down her bridesmaid.
She couldn't even scream or expose them. Just hours before the ceremony, Julian had tricked her into signing away her twenty percent shares of their co-founded company, leaving her completely penniless and unable to pay her grandmother's life-saving medical bills.
Fleeing in absolute despair, a sudden hotel blackout plunged her into a second nightmare. She was dragged into a pitch-black room and brutally violated by a heavily drugged stranger.
When a shattered Clara returned to the office to audit the books and reclaim her power, Julian demoted her to a dusty desk by the trash cans.
He flaunted his mistress in the executive suite and deliberately sent Clara into a horrifying trap. He arranged for vicious clients to drug and assault her, demanding high-definition blackmail photos so he could divorce her with absolutely nothing.
"Since you want to play rough, you can service Mr. Petrocelli tonight," the thug sneered, locking the VIP room door.
Clara was pushed to the brink of hell. Why was the man she devoted three years of her life to trying to destroy her so completely? And why did the freezing cedarwood scent of the stranger who ruined her in the dark perfectly match Conrad Vance, the ruthless CEO and Julian's untouchable uncle?
Rather than let Julian win, Clara smashed a glass bottle, held the jagged edge to her own throat to force the men back, and threw herself off the second-floor balcony into the freezing night.
But the bone-crushing impact never came. A massive figure shot out from the shadows and caught her, and her brutal counterattack finally began.

I was tossed into a dark alley like rotting garbage, bleeding and grieving the child I had just lost.
When I was finally brought back to my fiancé Angelo's penthouse, instead of comfort, I was met with absolute disgust.
His family declared me "unclean" after the kidnapping. Angelo coldly announced he was burying the scandal by marrying my sweet, innocent cousin, Carissa.
When we were alone, Carissa stood over my bed, her voice dripping with venomous delight.
"My father arranged the kidnapping. And now, Angelo and I can finally be together."
Before I could react, she forced a silver letter opener into my hand, deliberately stabbed her own shoulder, and let out a bloodcurdling scream.
Angelo stormed in, struck me across the face, and gathered a sobbing Carissa into his arms, looking at me with absolute revulsion.
The family matriarch appeared at the door, her cold eyes sweeping over the scene before she gave a chilling order to the maids.
"Clean this up."
They pinned me down and brutally drove the blade directly into my chest.
I choked on my own blood, staring at the man who had promised me the world as he turned his back, calling my murder a "mercy."
As my heart beat its final agonizing rhythm, I made a silent vow to the shadows that if there was a next life, I would have my vendetta.
When I opened my eyes again, there was no blood, only the soft silk of my nightgown.
I had returned to the day before my eighteenth birthday.
This time, I wouldn't play the desperate victim. I was going to ally with the Devil of Chicago and burn them all to the ground.

Isolde Mitchell knew her wealthy husband was cheating on her, but the true nightmare began when her mother-in-law summoned her.
The older woman coldly announced that the mistress was pregnant with a boy and would be moving into their estate.
Because Isolde's family had gone bankrupt and she had only given birth to a frail daughter, she was deemed completely worthless.
When Isolde packed her bags and demanded a divorce, her husband Clark just laughed.
He threatened to use their ironclad prenup to leave her penniless and take full custody of her daughter just to torture her.
To make matters worse, he forced Isolde to secure a failing business deal with the ruthless billionaire Jacques Valdez, essentially ordering her to sell her body to get the signature.
"If you fail, you will never see Bria again."
He even sent his goons to snatch the little girl from her preschool to prove his point.
Isolde was completely cornered, trembling with a mix of rage and absolute despair.
How could the man she married be such a monster? She would rather die than let them destroy her daughter, but how could a bankrupt mother fight a powerful dynasty with absolutely nothing?
Out of options, she looked at the private business card the terrifying billionaire Jacques had unexpectedly given her daughter.
Swallowing her pride, she decided to make a deal with the devil himself, ready to use his power to tear her husband's family apart.

On the morning of our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, I found a cream-colored document tucked inside my husband's suit pocket.
It was a twenty-million-dollar asset transfer for his former receptionist, Carmen. But what made my blood run cold was the contingent beneficiary: Leo, my newborn son who the hospital claimed was kidnapped twenty-three years ago.
When I confronted Devonte, he didn't even try to explain. He handed me a fake Cartier watch, canceled all my credit cards, and publicly called me delusional.
The next day, he moved Carmen into our mansion and emptied all our joint accounts into offshore trusts.
"If you don't sign these papers and walk away, I will have you committed," he threatened, his mother nodding in agreement.
They had orchestrated the kidnapping of my baby, hiding him with the mistress while I spent half my life sedated and screaming in grief. Now, to keep his secret, Devonte was going to lock me in a psychiatric ward and bury me in debt.
I didn't understand how the man I loved could be such a monster. Why did he steal my child? What else was hidden in that confidential adoption file?
Pushed to the absolute brink, I refused to be his victim.
When his goons came to my temporary apartment to drag me away, I turned to the rugged union electrician who had just fixed my lights.
"If you need a husband to keep you out of a psych ward, I'll marry you," he said, offering himself as my legal shield.
I took his hand. It was time to tear my husband's perfect life apart.
