The Fake Nerd is a Secret Billionaire Heiress
Chapter 2
Lilyana
The concrete wall of the basketball court bit into my back through the thin fabric of my thrifted sweater. Zander’s hand was an iron shackle around my wrist, his thumb pressing directly over my pounding pulse. He was too close. I could smell the sharp, clean scent of his expensive cologne mixed with sweat, a combination that felt entirely overwhelming, entirely trapping.
"I asked you a question, nerd," Zander growled, his face dropping lower, his dark eyes drilling into mine behind my oversized glasses. "Where the fuck did you get a six-figure custom British timepieces?"
My lungs felt empty. The panic was a living, breathing thing clawing up my throat. If he kept looking, if he looked too closely at my face instead of just the watch, the whole facade would crumble on day one. I couldn't let London find me. I couldn't go back to that hell.
"I-I told you, it's fake!" I forced the words out, trying to make my voice sound small, weak, and pathetic. I let my shoulders slump, playing the part of the terrified scholarship girl. "It's a replica. A cheap piece of garbage I bought at a street market in Camden before I moved here. It’s worth twenty bucks, max!"
Zander’s eyes narrowed into slits. He didn’t release his grip. Instead, he lifted my wrist higher, twisting it slightly so the afternoon sun caught the flawless platinum casing. "A replica? Don't bullshit me. Look at the sweeping second hand. Look at the weight. The metal isn't cheap stainless steel, it's platinum. My dad collects these. I know what a real one feels like."
"You're wrong!" I snapped, a flash of my real, defensive anger slipping through before I quickly masked it with a pathetic whimper. "Please, you're hurting me. Let me go. I'm just a scholarship student. Do you really think someone like me could afford something like that? It's a knock-off. A fake. Just like... just like everything else I own."
Zander stared at me, his chest rising and falling heavily against mine. The intense, possessive rage in his eyes didn't fade, but a flicker of confusion crossed his sharp features. He was trying to reconcile the priceless heirloom with the girl standing before him in a frayed gray sweater and taped-together glasses.
"Zander! Babe, what the hell are you doing?"
A sharp, shrill voice shattered the suffocating tension.
The heavy click of designer stilettos marched across the asphalt. I looked past Zander’s broad shoulder and saw Madison Rhodes strutting toward us. She was the undisputed queen bee of Hudson University, dressed in a pristine white designer skirt and a tight pastel top. Her blonde hair was perfectly blown out, and her face was twisted into an ugly expression of pure disgust as she looked at me.
Zander didn't let go of my wrist immediately. He slowly turned his head, a muscle leaking tension in his jaw. "Not now, Madison."
"What do you mean, 'not now'?" Madison huffed, crossing her arms as she stopped right next to him. She wafted a cloud of overly sweet luxury perfume into the air. "The whole team is waiting for you, and you're over here pinning a charity case against a wall? Are you seriously wasting your time bullying a nobody? It's embarrassing."
"I said, back off, Madison," Zander warned, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low pitch.
But Madison wasn't listening. Her sharp, cat-like eyes glided down Zander's arm, landing directly on his hand wrapped around my wrist—and then, inevitably, onto the watch.
She froze. The casual smirk of superiority vanished from her face.
"Wait," Madison muttered, her eyes widening. She stepped closer, shoving her way into my personal space and tearing my arm toward her own face, forcing Zander to loosen his grip just enough for her to inspect it. "What the fuck is that?"
"It's a replica," I pleaded desperately, my heart hammering like a trapped bird. "I was just telling him, it's a fake from a street market—"
"Shut up!" Madison hissed, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. She grabbed my hand herself, her long acrylic nails digging painfully into my skin. She turned my wrist over, staring at the tiny, intricate engraving on the side of the platinum bezel—a specific, generational crest of the Carter dynasty that only old-money families would ever recognize. Her family was new-money corporate, but she spent her entire life memorizing luxury catalogs to maintain her status.
I saw the exact moment the realization hit her. The blood completely drained from Madison's face, replaced by a mixture of shock, jealousy, and deep, toxic malice.
"This isn't a fake," Madison whispered, her voice trembling with a venomous realization. She looked up at me, her eyes locking onto my oversized glasses with a terrifying intensity. "The dial... the sapphire on the crown... My mother has been on a waiting list for a lower-tier version of this model for three years. This is an authentic, custom British heirloom. It's worth at least two hundred thousand dollars."
Zander stepped back, his eyes snapping from Madison back to me, the dark suspicion returning tenfold. "Are you sure, Mads?"
"Am I sure? Zander, I know jewelry better than anyone on this campus," Madison sneered, her gaze burning holes into my cheap sweater. She let go of my arm like I was radioactive, wiping her hands on her skirt. "There is absolutely no way a pathetic scholarship rat from London accidentally bought a flawless, authentic piece like this at a street market. She’s lying through her ugly teeth."
"I'm not!" I yelled, tears of absolute frustration and fear prickling the corners of my eyes. This was turning into a nightmare. "It's a fake! You guys are insane! Just leave me alone!"
Using the momentary distraction of their shock, I violently yanked my arm free from Madison’s grip. I dropped to my knees, frantically scooping up the scattered registration papers from the concrete, my fingers trembling so badly I tore the edges of the sheets. I didn't care. I just needed to get away from them.
"Hey! I didn't tell you you could leave," Zander barked, reaching down to grab my shoulder.
"Don't touch me!" I screamed, a raw, primal burst of my true aristocratic authority slipping out. The sheer force of my tone actually made him pause for a fraction of a second.
I snatched the last paper, scrambled to my feet, and bolted. I didn't look back. I ran as fast as my worn-out sneakers could carry me, tears streaming down my face, the heavy frames of my glasses bouncing wildly against my nose. I ran until the basketball court was a distant memory, my breath coming in ragged, suffocating gasps.
...
Zander Hudson stood dead in the center of the basketball court, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his athletic shorts. He watched the girl’s retreating figure until she disappeared completely behind the gothic arches of the library building. His chest was still tight, his mind an absolute chaotic mess of confusion and an unsettling, possessive urge that he couldn't quite explain. He hated liars. And that girl was a massive, dangerous lie walking on two feet.
"Can you believe her?" Madison spat, pacing around Zander like a caged animal, her heels clicking violently against the asphalt. Her face was flushed with an ugly, dark rage. "A charity case walking around our campus wearing a fortune on her wrist? It makes me sick to my stomach."
"Drop it, Madison," Zander said coldly, his voice devoid of any emotion as he picked up his basketball from the ground. "It has nothing to do with you."
"Nothing to do with me? Zander, she is a fraud!" Madison marched right up to him, grabbing his arm, her eyes wild with malicious excitement. "Think about it. A poor nerd from London arrives in America with a six-figure watch? She didn't buy that. She either stole it from some rich family she worked for back in England, or she's a high-end scammer trying to infiltrate our school."
Zander yanked his arm out of her grip, his eyes flashing with a sudden, protective anger that surprised even himself. "I said shut the fuck up about it. Go back to your friends."
"Fine! Protect her if you want, but I know what I saw," Madison hissed, her voice dropping into a wicked, scheming whisper. She turned on her heel, a dark, twisted plan already forming in her mind.
She walked away from the courts, pulling her phone out of her designer bag. Her fingers flew across the screen, dialing her closest circle of campus sycophants. If the scholarship rat wanted to play high society, Madison was going to strip her bare in front of the entire student body.
"Hey, it's me," Madison murmured into the phone, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across her lips as she looked back toward the freshman dorms. "I need you to gather the girls. We're going to find out exactly where Lilyana Carter keeps her things. I'm going to take that watch right off her pathetic wrist, and when I expose her as a thief, she won't just lose her scholarship—she’ll leave this university in handcuffs."
