Ten Years and a Secret Son Chapter 1

On our tenth wedding anniversary, my husband gifted me a diamond necklace to celebrate. Yet his gaze was glued to his phone, a tender smile playing on his lips.

I secretly checked his cloud drive and discovered a photo album documenting a boy's growth over five years.

Beneath the photos were captions like, "Christmas gift from Dad," and "Dad took us to Disneyland."

It wasn’t that he didn’t want kids. He just already had one with someone else.

I followed him to Brooklyn and rang the doorbell.

A five-year-old boy opened the door and shouted, "Mom, someone's here!"

Then, I saw the person I least wanted to see—my college roommate.

She blocked the doorway, her expression a mask of confusion. "I think you have the wrong address."

Just then, my husband stumbled out from the living room, his voice cracking as he begged, "Avery, let me explain…"

"Explain what?" I shot back. "That this child isn't yours?"

1

Today was our tenth wedding anniversary.

Caleb Prescott gifted me a dazzling diamond necklace, but a knot of unease tightened in my stomach.

I forced a smile. "Whatever you were looking at on your phone, you seemed to be enjoying it."

Caleb’s eyes darted away. "Just a funny video. It's late. Let's get to bed."

Before I could say another word, he turned and retreated into the bathroom.

After ten years of marriage, I knew him like the back of my hand. That flicker of panic told me everything. He was hiding something.

By the time the bathroom door creaked open, I was already in bed, feigning sleep. Caleb slipped under the covers, hugging me from behind as he always did. His body was stiff as a board, his embrace hollow and unfamiliar.

Only when his breathing settled into a deep, steady rhythm did I slip out of bed and retrieve his laptop from the nightstand.

He had forgotten to log out of his shared cloud drive. The irony was almost comical.

I opened the drive. The file list seemed innocent enough: our honeymoon photos pinned to the top, followed by albums from family vacations and his work files. I scoured every folder, determined. Then I saw it—a folder I didn't recognize: "Archive."

I clicked it. A password prompt appeared.

I tried his birthday, my birthday, our anniversary—all wrong.

Then, on a desperate whim, I typed in the date of our first date: 1015.

The page loaded. My breath caught in my throat.

It was a photo album cataloging a little boy’s life.

The first picture showed a four- or five-year-old boy holding a "Merry Christmas" sign, his eyes crinkling into a smile. In his arms was an intricate Lego set. The caption read, "Christmas gift from Dad. He was over the moon."

I scrolled down.

October: "Five years old. Dad took us to Disneyland, just like he promised."

August: "First parent-teacher conference. Dad looked so handsome in his suit."

May: "Baby's running a fever. Dad stayed with him all night…"

The earliest photo was from five years ago. A close-up of a newborn's tiny feet, captioned: "Our little prince has arrived. Six pounds, eight ounces. Dad cried."

So it wasn't that he didn't want to be a father. He already was one.

And I had believed his lies, believed him when he said a life with just the two of us was all he ever wanted. And what did that make me? A complete and utter fool.

I placed the laptop back where I found it and slid into bed.

I stared at the ceiling, sleepless, until the first light of dawn. When morning came, I went through my routine like any other day—I got up, washed my face, got dressed. The moment he left for work, I grabbed my keys and followed.
