When My Husband Married His Mistress Without Divorcing Me Chapter 1

I got to the restaurant at seven. Early. I always came early.

The place was one of those Manhattan spots where the lighting cost more than most people's rent. Soft gold on white tablecloths. Candles in glass that didn't flicker. I'd picked it myself three weeks ago. Booked it. Paid the deposit. Sent the invitations. Damon said he was too busy. Thomas said I should just hire someone. Autumn said it didn't matter because no one cared about fiftieth birthdays anyway.

I wore the blue dress. Simple. Knee-length. I bought it on sale and then felt guilty about the sale price for two days.

A hundred people were already inside when I walked in. Damon's business partners. Autumn's college friends. Thomas's girlfriend, whose name I could never remember because he brought a new one every few months. Chelsea, of course. She stood near the bar in something white and expensive, holding a glass of champagne like it was a prop in a movie about beautiful, suffering women.

I touched the inside of my left wrist without thinking. The skin there was smooth. Empty. My mother's ring used to sit right there. I pawned it twenty-eight years ago to keep Damon's first startup alive. He never asked where it went. I told him anyway. He said that was smart of me.

I let myself hope, just for tonight, that he would say the word *wife* like it meant something.

People smiled when they saw me. The kind of smile you give someone when you're supposed to. I smiled back. I'd gotten good at it. I moved through the room and checked the seating chart and made sure the caterers had the right count. No one asked if I needed help. No one ever did.

Damon came in at seven-thirty with Chelsea on his arm.

He looked good. He always looked good. Custom suit. Hair just grey enough to look distinguished. He was laughing at something she said. His hand rested on her lower back, the way it used to rest on mine a long time ago, back when we were two broke kids at NYU who thought love and ambition were the same thing.

I watched him guide her to a table near the front. Not my table. I was sitting with Thomas and Autumn and some of Damon's clients I'd entertained a thousand times and whose names I knew better than they knew mine.

Chelsea saw me and waved. Warm. Friendly. She had that smile that looked like it cost nothing.

I waved back.

Dinner was fine. The food was good. I didn't taste it. Thomas spent the whole first course on his phone. Autumn talked to the woman next to her about some gallery opening in Chelsea—the neighborhood, not the woman—and didn't look at me once. One of Damon's partners asked me how I was doing, and I said I was well, and he nodded and turned back to his wife.

I drank water and waited for the toasts.

Chelsea stood up before dessert.

She didn't ask. She just took the microphone from the restaurant manager, who looked confused but handed it over anyway. Chelsea had that effect. People just gave her things.

"I want to say something," she said. Her voice was soft. Gentle. The whole room went quiet.

The screens on the walls—the ones they used for slideshows at corporate events—flickered on.

I didn't understand at first.

Then I saw myself.

It was footage from our kitchen. Late at night. The timestamp said 2:47 a.m. I was standing at the sink in my bathrobe, holding a glass of water. My face was blotchy. I'd been crying. I didn't remember that night specifically, but I remembered a hundred nights like it.

On the screen, I whispered to myself. The audio was bad, but you could hear it.

*I'm so tired.*

The room was silent.

Chelsea's voice came through the speakers, warm and sad, like she was delivering bad news to a child.

"I think we all need to be honest about something," she said. "Elora is a wonderful woman. She works so hard. But she's been living under a delusion for a very long time."

I couldn't move.

"She's the hired help," Chelsea said. "She's been deluding herself into thinking she's the wife."

Someone laughed.

It was Autumn.

I turned. My daughter had her hand over her mouth, but her eyes were bright. Delighted. Thomas lifted his phone. He was filming.

I looked at Damon.

He was staring at his water glass. His hand moved, just slightly, straightening it against the edge of the table. Two inches to the left.

"Damon," I said.

It was the only word I said all night.

He didn't look up.

"Don't make a scene," he said quietly.

I sat very still.

The room recalibrated around me. I could feel it. A hundred people deciding, in real time, who I was. Not Damon Carter's wife. Not the mother of his children. Not the woman who pawned her mother's ring or waitressed double shifts or held the business together in the first year when it bled money.

The hired help.

Something inside me went silent. Not broken. Just silent. Like a machine that had been running for thirty years and finally, mercifully, stopped.

At the back of the room, a man I didn't recognize stood with a small camera in his hands. He wasn't filming. He was just watching. Watching Damon's face.

Then he turned and walked out.

I went home alone just after midnight.

Damon came in at three. I heard the door. Heard him pour water in the kitchen. Heard him go to bed without checking on me.

I stood at the kitchen window with coffee too hot to taste and understood, with the clarity of arithmetic, that I had been waiting for a man who left a long time ago.

I went to the closet. Found the locked box in the back, under old scarves I never wore.

I held it in my hands.

I didn't open it yet.

But I would.

My husband, a high-ranking Capo, had signed away our son’s protection to make room for his mistress’s bastard. He sneered at me, calling Danny "soft," and sent him to an unguarded cabin in the north to toughen up. Three days later, the Russians took him. When the courier arrived, there was no ransom demand. Just a package containing a shred of blue cotton with a green T-Rex, soaked in black, stiff blood. Tom didn't shed a tear. He poured a scotch, stepped over me as I wept on the floor, and blamed me for coddling the boy. Overwhelmed by the silence of a house that would never hear my son's laughter again, I swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills to escape the pain. But the darkness didn't last. I woke up gasping, my heart hammering against my ribs. Sunlight hit my face. "Mommy?" Danny stood in the doorway, wearing his dinosaur pajamas, whole and alive. I looked at the calendar. It was May 15th. The day the letter arrived. The grief in my chest calcified into cold rage. I knew about the skimming. I knew about the fake widow status. I knew exactly how to bury my husband. I picked up the phone and dialed the one number no wife was ever supposed to call directly—the Enforcer. "I have evidence of treason," I said. "And I'm bringing the proof."
