Chapter 6

Kiara POV

I turned my head sharply toward Xavier and my breath catching in my throat.

The car was silent except for the low hum of the engine, but his words echoed loudly in my mind.

He knew not just my name but every single thing about myself and family.

“How do you know that?”

I asked, unable to hide the edge in my voice. “About me… about Tristan?”

He didn’t look at me immediately.

Instead, he remained relaxed in his seat, one arm resting lazily against the leather and his gaze fixed ahead as if the answer was too obvious to deserve effort. “There’s very little I don’t know,” he said calmly.

Something about the way he said it sent a chill down my spine then his eyes shifted to me.

“Especially when it concerns my family,” he added and my chest tightened, family...

Right, Tristan was engaged to Aurora and Aurora happens to be his daughter.

Now everything suddenly felt more complicated. “Tristan,” he continued, his tone unreadable, “is not just your past, he is my daughter’s future.”

I swallowed hard. “And yet,” he went on, watching me now with unsettling focus, “he was once your fated mate.”

The words settled heavily between us and I looked away instantly, heat rushing to my face.

That was the one truth I hadn’t wanted him to know and the one thing that made this whole situation even more… twisted.

“Am I wrong?” he asked quietly.

I shook my head, unable to speak and silence stretched between us. “I see,” he murmured.

There was no judgment in his tone but somehow, that made it worse. “Regardless of the past,” he continued after a moment, “Tristan and Aurora will be married soon.”

My chest tightened again. “I expect things to proceed without… complications.”

I bit my lip and a thousand responses burned at the tip of my tongue but I swallowed them all, because what could I say?

That I was fine?

That I didn’t care?

That I wasn’t still breaking inside?

Instead, I turned my head toward the window, letting the passing lights blur together.

I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing my pain.

A few minutes later, something else hit me.

The road and the direction made my stomach dropped because I hadn’t told him where I lived but the car was heading straight toward my house.

Slowly, I turned back to him.

He sat there like he owned the world, completely unbothered as if tracking down every detail of my life was nothing more than routine. “Do you always investigate people this thoroughly?” I asked quietly.

He didn’t answer but he didn’t deny it either which somehow made the entire situation more worse.

I tried to focus on anything else but my thoughts betrayed me and they drifted back to that night, to his touch and the way his lips had claimed mine without hesitation.

Impossible to forget and my breath hitched slightly, without thinking, my fingers lifted to my neck… brushing the faint mark he had left behind.

The same mark Tristan had seen and it nearly driven him mad.

Heat spread through my body at the memory.

“You’re staring.”

His voice cut through my thoughts like a blade and I froze then quickly looked away. “I wasn’t.......”

“Mm.”

That single sound told me he didn’t believe me at all.

The car slowed then stopped, I blinked and we were already outside my house.

I let out a quiet breath, suddenly aware of how fast my heart was beating. “Oh… we’re here.”

I reached for the door, eager to escape the tension filling the car. “Thank you for the ride,” I said quickly.

Before I could step out, his hand closed around my wrist firmly and my breath caught.

The contact was brief but it sent warmth racing through my entire body. “kiara.”

The way he said my name in a possessive manner made my pulse stutter and I turned back slowly, meeting his gaze. “Yes?”

My voice came out softer than I intended and his eyes searched mine for a moment like he was trying to read something beneath the surface.

Then.......“We won’t be seeing each other again.”

The words hit harder than I expected, it was unexpected and felt painful even though I only knew him for a few days.

I stared at him, caught off guard and for a second, I couldn’t even breathe. “Oh.”

That was all I managed and I forced a small nod. “Understood.”

His grip loosened then disappeared completely and just like that the warmth vanished.leaving behind something cold and emptiness.

I stepped out of the car without another word.

The door shut behind me with a quiet click, I didn’t turn back immediately because something inside me felt… off like I had just lost something I didn’t even realize I wanted.

After a second, I glanced over my shoulder the car was still there the windows was dark and I couldn't see through it so I lifted my hand awkwardly and gave a small wave before turning toward the house but why did that feel so… personal?

The house was dark, quiet and empty when I entered, I closed the door behind me and leaned against it for a moment, exhaling slowly.

A few seconds later I heard the car driving off. I let out the breath I didn't know I was holding.

Upstairs, I stripped out of the uniform immediately, tossing it onto the bed like it had burned me.

I stared at it for a moment, it was short, tight and quiet revealing and a symbol of everything I refused to become. “No,” I muttered to myself.

I wasn’t going to degrade myself for money.

I wasn’t going to let Tristan or anyone reduce me to that, I had worked too hard and nobody could degrade my effort and hard work.

I walked to my desk and grabbed my phone, typing out a quick message to Nyla.

I’m home and I’m not coming back to that job.

I stared at the screen for a moment before hitting send then I added another message, I’ll explain tomorrow.

There was no way I was going to return to that place after what happened tonight. I made a mental note to apologize to the manager as well.

I dropped the phone onto the bed and sat down beside it, rubbing my temples.

Everything felt overwhelming, my father, the debt, Tristan, Xavier and the choices in front of me but none of them were easy or safe.

Only one thing was clear, I wasn’t going to beg and I definitely wasn’t going to belong to someone who didn’t deserve me.

Still as I lay back against the bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind betrayed me one last time.

Dark eyes, deep voice and a strong hand gripping my wrist. “We won’t be seeing each other again.”

My chest tightened slightly and I let out a slow breath. “Good,” I whispered but for some reason, It didn’t feel good at all.

I watched Grace's hands tremble as she tore open the envelope, her breath held in that fragile moment between hope and disappointment. The morning light streamed through our kitchen window, catching the dust motes that danced around us in our small Kentucky home—a home that had witnessed twenty years of my silent endurance. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was my only companion in the sterile hospital room. I stared at the ceiling, counting the tiny holes in each tile as I had for the past eighteen hours. The American Express alert chimed on my phone at exactly 2:47 PM, interrupting my review of quarterly investment reports.
