After My Boyfriend Married His Mistress, I Married His Rival Chapter 1

It was a grey Tuesday morning in Manhattan. The wind off the street was biting cold, but I stayed outside the New York City Clerk’s Office, tucked into my best wool coat.

My phone screen lit up. 9:20 AM.

Kingsley was twenty minutes late.

I slid my thumb slowly along the smooth metal edge of my wristwatch. It was an old habit, something I did whenever my chest got too tight to breathe. My mother was lying in a hospice bed across town. The doctors had given her three weeks, maybe four. All she wanted was to see me married. Just once. To know I wasn’t alone in this world.

I had asked Kingsley ninety-eight times over the last five years.

I asked him after I sold my condo to fund his new firm. I asked him on quiet Sunday mornings, and on late nights when we fell asleep over case files on the office floor. He always had a reason to wait. *Next quarter, Azalea. After the Baxter case settles, Azalea.*

Today was attempt ninety-nine. I didn't rehearse a speech. I just stood on the pavement and waited.

The heavy glass doors pushed open from the curb side.

Kingsley walked up the granite steps. He looked effortless, as always, with his dark cashmere coat unbuttoned. But he wasn’t alone.

Ember Duncan was clinging to his arm. She wore a cream silk dress under her jacket, her lips painted bright red. She looked flushed and giddy, like a child who had just stolen the best toy in the room.

I stepped forward. “Kingsley—”

He didn't stop. He didn't even look me in the eye.

“Not now, Azalea,” he said smoothly.

He gripped Ember’s hand and pulled her straight toward the counter inside. The room was mostly empty. The clerk looked bored behind the glass partition.

I stood frozen near the door.

Kingsley handed over two driver’s licenses. He signed a document with his custom fountain pen. Ember giggled, scribbling her name right underneath his.

It took less than four minutes.

The clerk stamped the paper with a dull *thud*. Just like that, Kingsley Arnold and Ember Duncan were legally husband and wife.

Ember looped both arms around his neck and kissed his cheek. “We actually did it,” she purred, loud enough for the entire hall to hear.

Kingsley patted her hip, then turned toward me. He looked completely relaxed, like he had just signed off on a routine corporate filing. He reached down and adjusted his silver cufflink with two fingers.

“Ember needed this settled for her family’s trust,” he said, his tone breezy and flat. “You don't mind waiting a little longer, do you?”

I didn't answer.

“We have a celebratory brunch at noon,” he added, glancing down at his watch. “Take a cab back to the office. Draft the summary for the Baxter deposition before two.”

He took Ember’s elbow and led her out into the cold. The heavy glass doors swung shut behind them with a muffled click.

I stood alone in the marble corridor. Overhead, the fluorescent bulbs hummed a thin, buzzing tune.

My hands didn't shake. My eyes didn't sting. For five years, I had bent myself backward to fit into the cracks of his life. I had shrunk my dreams, spent my savings, and swallowed every excuse.

In that quiet hall, the thing inside me that had bent for so long finally snapped. It didn't break. It turned into cold, hard steel.

I reached into my pocket and took out my phone.

I scrolled past Kingsley’s name without a single beat of hesitation. I found the number I knew by heart, the man who had opposed me in courtrooms across New York for four solid years.

Caspian Lee.

I pressed call.

He answered on the first ring.

“Azalea,” his deep voice came through the line, crisp and alert.

“Are you near Lower Manhattan?” I asked. My voice came out steady, stripped of all emotion.

“Two blocks away,” he said. “What's wrong?”

“I need a husband,” I told him. “Today. Right now.”

There was a short pause. No questions. No jokes about our courtroom battles.

“Are you sure?” Caspian asked.

“Yes.”

“Stay right there.”

Nine minutes and forty seconds later, Caspian Lee walked through the revolving doors.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit, sharp and clean, without a wrinkle in sight. His dark hair was brushed back. He carried no flowers. There was no fanfare. He walked toward me with the calm, certain stride of a man who had already made up his mind years ago.

He stopped in front of me. His dark eyes searched my face for half a second.

“Let’s go,” he said quietly.

We walked to the clerk's counter together. I handed over my ID. Caspian handed over his. We answered the clerk’s dull questions. We signed our names on the dotted lines. The wet black ink looked bold and clean on the thick paper.

The clerk pressed down the seal.

“Congratulations,” the man mumbled, sliding the marriage certificate across the counter.

It was done.

“Thank you,” I whispered, staring at the paper.

Caspian looked down at me, his expression calm and steady. “Where to now?”

“St. Jude’s,” I said. “My mother.”

“I’ll drive.”

Twenty minutes later, I walked into the quiet hospice ward. The room smelled of rubbing alcohol and faint lavender.

My mother, Marianna, was propped up on thin white pillows. Her skin was grey and paper-thin, her breathing shallow. When she heard my footsteps, her eyes fluttered open.

I didn't say a word. I sat on the edge of the mattress and gently placed the gold-sealed marriage certificate into her frail, trembling hands.

She lifted the paper slowly.

Her gaze moved across the lines until it landed on the groom's name: *Caspian Lee.*

She didn't ask about Kingsley. She didn't look confused.

Instead, a soft breath escaped her lips. The deep tension around her eyes completely vanished. Her face softened into a relief so profound it looked almost like sleep.

She closed her eyes, clutching the paper against her chest, and smiled.

I sat beside her bed, held her cold fingers, and explained nothing at all.
