Revenge of the jilted Carrington heiress
Chapter 5
The transition from the noisy, cramped confines of the public charity ward to the private medical transport felt like crossing the threshold from one reality into an entirely different universe. The moment Soren lifted Ophelia into his arms, the chaotic noises of the hospital seemed to fade into a distant hum. The medical team his brother had summoned moved with a quiet, practiced precision that brooked no argument, shielding her from the curious stares of the other patients with professional discretion.
Within minutes, she was resting comfortably inside a climate-controlled, custom-fitted medical transit vehicle that felt more like a luxury executive lounge than an ambulance. Soft leather seating lined the spacious cabin, and advanced medical monitors hummed quietly in the background, displaying her vital signs with pristine clarity. Roderick climbed in right behind them, closing the heavy door with a solid, muffled thud that cut off the outside world entirely.
As the vehicle glided smoothly away from the curb, picking up speed on the empty highway toward the Carrington family's private estate, Roderick reached into his coat and pulled out a bottle of water, unscrewing the cap before handing it to her with a gentle, reassuring look.
"Drink a little bit of this, Ophelia," Roderick said, his voice losing the sharp edge he had used back in the ward. "You’ve had a massive shock, and your body is running on pure adrenaline right now. Take it easy."
Ophelia took the bottle with a trembling hand, murmuring a quiet thank you as she took a small sip. The cool water felt soothing against her dry throat, grounding her slightly amidst the whirlwind of events that had just unfolded. She looked from Roderick to Soren, who sat beside her on the plush leather bench, keeping a protective hand near her shoulder as if still half-believing she might vanish into thin air.
"I still feel like I'm dreaming," Ophelia admitted softly, her slate-grey eyes resting on her eldest brother. "Twenty-two years I thought I was completely alone in this world. And now... now you tell me I belong to a family that never stopped looking for me."
"You were never alone, Ophelia," Soren replied, his deep voice steady and absolute. "Even when we couldn't find you, every resource we had, every waking hour of our lives, was dedicated to the single goal of bringing you home. You don't ever have to worry about surviving on your own again."
Roderick leaned back against the seat, crossing his long legs as his eyes hardened slightly, a cold shadow crossing his handsome features. "Which brings us back to the pathetic excuse of a husband you left behind in that city," he said, his tone turning razor-sharp. "Soren and I have been briefed on your life for the past three years, but we want to hear it directly from you. How did a Carrington end up married to a man like Lucien Sterling?"
Ophelia stiffened slightly at the mention of his name, a bitter taste rising in her mouth. She looked down at her lap, watching her fingers trace the edge of the blanket.
"I met him three years ago when I was working as a junior financial analyst at a mid-sized firm," Ophelia explained, her voice carrying a quiet, heavy sorrow. "Lucien had just started climbing the corporate ladder, presenting himself as an ambitious, hardworking man who was fighting against ruthless competitors. He seemed vulnerable, charming, and deeply affectionate. He made me feel like I finally had a safe space in the world. So when he asked me to marry him, I said yes."
"And you gave him everything," Soren stated, not as a question, but as a grim observation.
"I gave him my loyalty, my support, and my silence," Ophelia whispered, her jaw tightening as the memories of the past three years rushed back. "Whenever his business deals hit a wall, I stayed up late nights helping him restructure his proposals, quietly making sure his reports looked flawless so his superiors would notice him. I thought we were building a life together as partners. But the moment his career started taking off, everything changed. He started spending more time away from home, dinners turned into late-night meetings, and then Liora entered the picture."
"Liora Vance," Roderick spat the name out as if it left a foul taste on his tongue. "The C-list actress who thinks wearing designer gowns makes her part of high society. Lucien traded a diamond for a piece of cheap glass."
"He didn't just trade me, Roderick," Ophelia said, looking up, her slate-grey eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce intensity. "Last night, when we were driving back from a charity function, another vehicle swerved violently into our lane. Lucien panicked behind the wheel, freezing up completely. If I hadn't thrown myself across the center console to shield him from the point of impact, the steering column would have crushed his chest. I took the brunt of the collision. My ribs cracked, my head slammed against the dashboard, and I woke up bleeding in a public ward."
Soren’s breathing stopped entirely. The air in the luxury cabin plummeted in temperature, turning glacial as the terrifying, absolute fury of the eldest Carrington brother surged to the surface. The muscles in his jaw worked tightly, and his obsidian eyes darkened into pools of pure ice.
"And while you were bleeding in that wretched ward," Soren said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that made even Roderick shift in his seat, "where was he?"
Ophelia let out a cold, humorless laugh, reaching down to pick up her cracked smartphone from the seat beside her. She pressed the screen to wake it up, opening the text thread and turning the phone toward her brothers so they could read the glowing words for themselves.
“The lawyers will handle the paperwork. Don’t make a scene, Ophelia. Liora is shaken up from the scare, and I don't need you bothering us right now.”
Roderick leaned forward, scanning the message once, twice, his lips parting in sheer disbelief before curling into a wicked, predatory sneer. "He actually sent that. After you saved his worthless life with your own body, he texts you from his mistress's bed telling you not to bother him."
"He thought I was a broken orphan with no one to protect me," Ophelia said, her voice steady, hard, and stripped of every ounce of hesitation she had carried for the last three years. "He thought he could throw me away like trash when I was no longer useful to him."
Soren reached out, taking the phone gently from her hand and locking the screen with a single press of his thumb. He set the device down on the center console, his gaze locking onto Ophelia with a look of profound, unwavering pride.
"He wanted a clean break, Ophelia?" Soren asked quietly, a dangerous, absolute promise echoing in every syllable of his voice.
"Yes," Ophelia answered, meeting his gaze without flinching.
Roderick cracked his knuckles, a sharp, cold smile spreading across his face as he pulled out his own tablet and began tapping furiously across the screen, bringing up Lucien Sterling's corporate registry, asset portfolios, and loan structures.
"Good," Roderick murmured, not looking up from his screen as the vehicle sped onward through the night. "Because the man who dared treat a Carrington heir like trash is about to find out what absolute ruin really looks like."
"Shall we pay him a visit tomorrow, little sister?" Soren asked softly, his hand resting reassuringly over hers.
