Revenge of the jilted Carrington heiress
Revenge of the jilted Carrington heiress Chapter 1
The smell of stale antiseptic and damp wool hung heavy in the air, pressing down on Ophelia’s chest long before she had the strength to open her eyes. Every breath she forced into her lungs felt like swallowing crushed glass, a jagged reminder of the shattered windshield and the deafening screech of tires that still echoed violently inside her skull.
When she finally managed to pry her eyelids apart, the harsh glare of the flickering fluorescent lights overhead made her wince. She was not in a quiet, private recovery room where someone of her husband’s social standing should reasonably be expected to rest. Instead, she lay in a narrow, squeaking metal bed wedged into the corner of a crowded, drafty public hospital ward. To her left, an elderly man wheezed in his sleep through a cracked plastic oxygen mask; to her right, a restless child tossed and turned, crying out for a nurse who was nowhere to be found.
Ophelia tried to shift her weight, but a sharp, burning agony flared across her ribs, leaving her breathless. Her entire body felt heavy, bruised, and profoundly broken. She remembered the blinding flash of the oncoming headlights, the sickening crunch of metal wrapping around a concrete barrier, and the desperate, instinctive lunge she had made across the center console of Lucien’s luxury sports car. She had thrown her own body over his, taking the full brunt of the impact to keep him alive. She had saved him without a second thought.
Her trembling right hand, bruised deep purple and anchored by a clumsy intravenous needle, reached instinctively toward the small plastic bedside table where her cracked smartphone lay facedown.
"Come on," she whispered, her voice dry, rasped, and barely audible over the collective murmurs and groans of the ward. "Just look at your phone, Lucien. Please."
As if in answer to a cruel prayer, the black screen suddenly lit up, casting a pale, cold glow across her pale face. A single notification banner flashed at the top. It was a text message sent ten minutes ago from the number she knew by heart—her husband of three years, the man she had nearly died to protect.
Ophelia’s thumb shook as she unlocked the screen and tapped the message open.
“The lawyers will handle the paperwork. Don’t make a scene, Ophelia. Liora is shaken up from the scare, and I don't need you bothering us right now.”
The words seemed to float on the cracked glass, freezing whatever warmth remained in her veins. Don't bother us. While she lay broken in a public charity ward, fighting for every breath, Lucien was sitting by another woman’s side. He was comforting Liora, the glamorous socialite who had spent the last year whispering into his ear at every high-society gala, easing her through a minor scare while his legally wedded wife was left to rot among strangers.
A hollow, mirthless sound escaped Ophelia’s throat, turning swiftly into a harsh, painful cough that made her ribs scream in protest.
A nurse in faded blue scrubs pushed a rolling medicine cart down the narrow aisle between the beds, pausing briefly by Ophelia’s side to check the IV drip. Seeing Ophelia staring blankly at her phone, the nurse offered a tired, sympathetic smile.
"Rough night, honey?" the nurse asked quietly, her fingers adjusting the flow valve. "Your family hasn't come by yet today. Do you want me to help you call someone? Maybe your husband?"
Ophelia slowly raised her head, her slate-grey eyes locking onto the nurse with an unsettling, chilling stillness that made the woman pause. The warmth of the naive, self-sacrificing wife who had spent years shrinking herself to fit into Lucien’s elite world was gone, extinguished entirely by the cold reality of his betrayal.
"No," Ophelia said, her voice steadying, carrying a sharp, quiet edge that cut right through the ambient noise of the ward. "There's no need to call him. He's busy taking care of someone else."
The nurse frowned, sensing the heavy shift in the atmosphere, but before she could press further, a sharp rustle of heavy fabric and the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from the doorway at the far end of the ward.
Ophelia barely registered the commotion as she let her head fall back against the coarse hospital pillow. She stared up at the stained ceiling tiles, her jaw tightening as a profound, unshakable resolve settled deep into her bones. Lucien wanted a clean break. He wanted her out of the picture so he could parade his mistress in the light of day. He thought she would crawl away in tears, broken and destitute.
He had no idea who he had just thrown away.
A familiar shadow fell over the foot of her bed, blocking out the harsh overhead light, but it wasn't the nurse or a doctor returning.
"Excuse me," a sharp, deep voice interrupted, cutting through the murmurs of the room with an authority that made the other patients instantly quiet down. "Is this bed occupied by Ophelia Sterling?"
