Chapter 3

The wolfsbane burned different on the seventh day.

I noticed it the moment Alonzo walked in. He moved the same way—clipboard, syringe case, eyes flat as paper—but something in my body registered the shift before my drugged mind caught up. A tightening in my chest. A pulse behind my ribs that felt less like fear and more like recognition.

I was sitting in the center of the cell.

Not against the wall where I usually waited. Not in the corner with the seam. Right in the middle of the floor, legs crossed, hands loose in my lap. I hadn't planned it. I'd woken up there an hour before his footsteps started down the corridor, and when I tried to move back to the wall, my body refused. Something in me wanted to be seen.

"Roll your sleeve," Alonzo said.

I rolled my sleeve.

But I watched his hands this time. Really watched them. The way he set the clipboard on the floor beside his boot—always the same spot, always within arm's reach. The way he uncapped the syringe with his thumb while his other hand reached for the stamp in his jacket pocket. The red wax seal pressed firm into the corner of the page. Dillon's wolf-head insignia. The routing header at the top: BY ORDER OF ALPHA DILLON, IRONRIDGE PACK.

I was not memorizing defensively anymore.

I was building a presentation.

The needle went in. The cold came first, then the burn—slower this time, thicker, like something crawling under my skin instead of flowing. I kept my face blank. Alonzo stamped the log. Click. He picked up the clipboard and left.

The door sealed.

I sat in the center of the cell and pressed my thumb against my wrist. My pulse was there. Steady. Strong.

I whispered into the dark.

"Ember."

Not a plea. Not a question. A statement. A name I was giving to the thing that had been building in my chest since the bond broke, since Emily's heartbeat stopped, since Riley sold my mother's death for hunting grounds. The fire that had not gone out.

The warmth pulsed once beneath my sternum. Brief. Certain.

I said the name again.

"Ember."

This time, the pulse lasted longer.

---

The voices came through the wall late that night.

Two guards. I didn't know their names. I'd stopped learning the names of wolves who watched me bleed and did nothing. They were standing just outside the cell door, close enough that their conversation bled through the thin seam where the silver panels met.

"—leaving tomorrow," one of them said. "Whole procession. Alpha wants to make an entrance."

"For the Summit?"

"Yeah. All the Alphas convening under the Lycan King. Big formal thing. Dillon's planning to present Hayley as his intended Luna. Make it official."

A pause. The sound of boots shifting on stone.

"What about the one in the cell?"

"What about her? She's feral. Alpha declared it himself. She's not going anywhere."

Their footsteps faded down the corridor.

I sat very still.

The words settled into me one at a time, each one a stone dropping into dark water. *Summit. All the Alphas. Lycan King. Hayley as intended Luna.*

I took one breath. Just one.

Then everything inside me—the grief, the rage, the three years of silence I swallowed to keep my mother alive, the cold dead bond on my neck, Emily's stopped heartbeat, Riley's warm voice signing away her death—all of it compressed to a single white-hot point in the center of my chest.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist.

My pulse was faster than it should be.

I closed my eyes and reached for the memory. My father's study. The leather-bound volumes of pack law he kept on the highest shelf, the ones he said I was too young to read but never stopped me from reading anyway. I'd been sixteen. Bored. Curious. I'd pulled down the oldest one and flipped through pages of archaic clauses and formal procedures until I found something that made me pause.

The Luna Accord.

I recited it now, word for word, into the dark.

*Any formally rejected Luna retains the right to demand a public tribunal before the assembled Alphas, provided the rejection was witnessed by no fewer than ten pack members and the rejected Luna invokes the Accord within thirty days of severance.*

Ten witnesses. I'd had the entire Ironridge Pack.

Thirty days. It had been seven.

I opened my eyes.

I had a wolf I couldn't reach. A body full of wolfsbane. Silver walls. No allies. No proof except the words I'd memorized in the dark.

I also had a legal mechanism that existed in a room Dillon could not control.

I began calculating the distance to the Summit. Three territories. Maybe four days on foot if I could shift. Two if I ran straight through. Less if I didn't stop.

The warmth in my chest pulsed again. Stronger this time. Like something listening.

"We're going," I whispered to it. To her. To Ember.

The pulse spread. Slowly. Then faster.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist and felt my pulse double.

---

The next injection round came early.

I heard Alonzo's footsteps in the corridor before dawn—hours ahead of schedule. When he opened the door, his face was the same blank mask, but his movements were faster. Efficient. He didn't wait for me to roll my sleeve. He grabbed my arm and pushed the fabric up himself.

The needle went in.

The burn was immediate. Worse than before. Not slow. Not crawling. A wildfire under my skin that spread from my shoulder to my spine to the base of my skull in seconds. I gasped. Couldn't help it. My vision blurred.

Alonzo stamped the log without looking at me. He left.

I collapsed forward onto my hands.

The wolfsbane was stronger. He'd increased the dosage. No notation on the log—I'd seen the page, seen the same measurement listed as every other day. A procedural deviation. Meant to bury me deeper before the Summit. Meant to make sure I stayed silent.

But something was wrong.

The burn kept spreading. It should have peaked and settled by now, should have dragged me under into the thick drugged fog I'd learned to navigate. Instead it kept building. Hotter. Brighter. Like the wolfsbane was colliding with something inside me that refused to be suppressed.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist.

My pulse tripled.

The warmth in my chest—Ember, I'd named her Ember—did not pulse and recede this time. It spread. Through my ribs. Down my arms. Into my legs. A heat that had nothing to do with the wolfsbane, that moved against it, that pushed back.

I felt my fingers curl into the stone floor.

I felt something in my spine shift.

I felt, for the first time in seven days, the shape of something inside me that had been silent my entire life. Not gone. Not broken. Just—waiting.

"Ember," I whispered.

The warmth exploded.

It flooded through me so fast I couldn't breathe. My back arched. My hands flattened against the floor. The silver walls around me seemed to hum, a low vibration I felt in my teeth. The wolfsbane burned and burned but underneath it, rising like a tide, something was waking up.

I pressed my thumb to my wrist.

My pulse was no longer my own.
