My Mate Chose His Mistress Over Our Unborn Child Chapter 1

The mark on my neck went cold at 7:58, right in the middle of Ronan saying my name.

I felt it before I understood the words — a drop in temperature under my skin, sharp as a hand pressed flat against ice. Then his voice, pitched loud enough to carry to the last row of the pack gathered under the winter sky: "I, Ronan West, Alpha of Ironcrest Pack, reject you, Mia Spencer, as my mate and Luna."

The cold spread. Not fast. Deliberate, like something closing a door in an empty room, click by click, until there was nothing behind it at all. My wolf, who had been pacing and snarling in my chest for weeks — since the night I first smelled the second heartbeat under my own — went silent so completely I thought for one heartbeat that she had died with the bond. And the warm, secret thread of scent I'd been guarding, telling no one, not even her, went out like a candle someone pinched between wet fingers.

I didn't move. I didn't make a sound.

Aura stepped into the space beside him before the echo of his words finished traveling across the clearing, orchid and satisfaction rolling off her skin in waves. Ronan's hand found the small of her back the way it used to find mine. The pack, kneeling in rows around the platform, murmured her new title into the frozen air like a blessing.

"Kneel," Ronan said, and the Alpha tone rolled out over the crowd, over me, pressing down on every spine in that clearing.

Mine didn't bend. I stood in the front row with my knees locked and my chin level, and if he noticed, he gave no sign. He was already turning to receive the pack's congratulations, already someone else's Alpha in every way that mattered.

I walked to the pack house alone while the bonfires roared behind me.

The study was dark and smelled like his cologne and old paper. I found the Renunciation forms in the second drawer, where Adele kept them filed under bloodline contingencies, and I signed my name in the same steady hand I'd used to write grocery lists that morning. No one stopped me. No one was watching. That was the whole point of leaving this way.

From my quarters I took the folded report Petra Voss had pressed into my hands three hours after I drove myself to the pack clinic, bleeding, alone, while Ronan's side of our bond had gone quiet in Paris. Confirmed miscarriage. Six weeks. I didn't read it again. I folded it into Nana's old recipe book, between a page for sourdough starter and one for chicken broth, and slid the book into my bag.

Then I went through every drawer, every shelf, every hook by the door, and pulled out anything that carried his scent, anything he'd given me — the bracelet from our mating ceremony, the sweater he'd worn for a year before letting me have it, the little wooden wolf he'd carved during our rogue winters when we had nothing else to give each other. I laid them all out across the bed in one straight, silent line, like evidence at a trial no one would ever hold.

Something in my chest — not the silence, something underneath it — lurched and snapped its teeth. It wasn't my wolf's voice. It was something older, something that had been sleeping so long I mistook it for absence. It didn't roar. It just turned over once, restless, and went still again.

I left before dawn. No note. No scent trail past the tree line I knew the trackers would check first. I crossed the boundary marker at the edge of Ironcrest land with the recipe book against my ribs and nothing else that was truly mine, and for the first time in years, that felt like the correct amount of luggage.

My phone buzzed forty hours later, somewhere outside Albany.

Callum's name on the screen. I almost didn't answer.

"He signed the papers this morning," Callum said, low, like he didn't want his own voice carrying. "Told me it was a tantrum. Said you'd come back by the full moon." A pause, static, wind on his end. "Mia — he can't find the link. Not blocked. Gone. His wolf's been pacing the study since midnight and it won't stop. He's got three tracking teams past the border already, and he told them not to come back without your scent."

I looked at the recipe book on the passenger seat, at the borders of a map I hadn't chosen yet.

"Then tell them," I said, "they're hunting a woman who doesn't exist anymore."

I hung up before he could answer, and kept driving north.
