Rejected by the Alpha, Claimed by the King Chapter 1

The crisp autumn air carried the scent of pine and damp earth as I approached the medical facility, my footsteps silent on the stone pathway. I had deliberately chosen not to announce this inspection—sometimes the most revealing truths emerged when people thought no one was watching.

As Luna of the Moonstone Territory pack, these surprise visits were part of my responsibility to ensure our members received the best possible care. The healing chambers housed our most vulnerable: warriors recovering from border skirmishes, elders battling illness, and young ones whose wolves had awakened with complications. Their welfare was sacred to me.

I pushed open the heavy wooden doors, expecting to find the usual quiet efficiency of Marcus Thompson's domain. Instead, chaos assaulted my senses.

"Where is he? Where is Clayton?" A shrill voice echoed through the sacred halls, followed by the sound of something crashing to the floor.

My wolf stirred uneasily within me as I quickened my pace toward the main healing chamber. The acrid smell of spilled herbs mixed with something else—something wrong that made my Luna instincts flare with alarm.

I rounded the corner and froze.

A wild-haired she-wolf stood in the center of the chamber, her arms gesticulating frantically as she spun in circles. Glass vials lay shattered at her feet, their precious contents—herbs that took months to cultivate—seeping into the stone floor like spilled blood. The sacred healing altar, where Marcus performed his most delicate work, was overturned.

"Ainara, please," Marcus pleaded, his usually steady hands trembling as he tried to salvage what remained of his supplies. "These medicines are for Elena Rodriguez. She needs them to heal from her injuries."

The she-wolf—Ainara—whirled toward him with manic energy. "Don't you dare tell me what I can and cannot do! I am the true Luna of this pack!"

My blood turned to ice. True Luna? The words hit me like a physical blow, stealing the breath from my lungs.

"You have no authority here," I said, my voice cutting through the chaos with Luna command. Every wolf in the room should have immediately submitted to that tone.

Ainara's head snapped toward me, her eyes wild and unfocused. Instead of the automatic submission my Luna status demanded, she laughed—a sound like breaking glass.

"Oh, look who's here. The pretender." She stepped closer, her movements erratic and unpredictable. "You think that little ceremony makes you his real mate? You think some words and a bite mark can change destiny?"

I felt my wolf rise within me, golden light flickering in my vision as my authority pressed against this blatant challenge. "I am Luna Nora Gray, mated to Alpha Clayton Wright. You will show respect or—"

"Respect?" Ainara shrieked, sweeping her arm across a nearby table. More vials crashed to the floor, including a rare batch of moonflower extract that Marcus had spent weeks preparing. "I owe you nothing! Clayton is MY mate! He told me so himself!"

The world tilted on its axis. Clayton told her what?

Marcus caught my eye, his expression a mixture of fear and something that looked like... pity? "Luna, perhaps we should discuss this elsewhere—"

"No." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "I want to hear what she has to say."

Ainara's smile was triumphant and utterly unhinged. "He comes to me every night, you know. Tells me how the Moon Goddess made a mistake with you. How he's just waiting for the right time to make things official." She leaned closer, her breath hot against my face. "He says you're too weak to be a real Luna. Too soft."

Each word was a dagger to my chest, but I kept my expression neutral. "And the pack allows this... disruption?"

Marcus's shoulders sagged. "Luna, we... Alpha Wright has made it clear that Ainara is under his protection. When we've tried to intervene..."

"He uses his Alpha tone," whispered one of the younger healers from the corner. "Says we're challenging pack hierarchy."

The pieces clicked into place with sickening clarity. My mate—my supposed partner in leadership—had been enabling this madness. Protecting this unstable she-wolf while she destroyed our pack's resources and terrorized our healers.

"How long?" I asked quietly.

Marcus wouldn't meet my eyes. "Three weeks, Luna. Since the night after the harvest moon ceremony."

Three weeks. The night after Clayton and I had renewed our mating vows in front of the entire pack. While I had been glowing with happiness, believing our bond was stronger than ever, he had been... what? Promising another she-wolf that she was his true mate?

Ainara was still talking, still destroying things, but her voice had faded to background noise. All I could hear was the thundering of my own heartbeat and the low, dangerous growl building in my chest.

My perfect mate. My devoted Alpha. The wolf I had trusted with not just my heart, but the welfare of our entire pack.

He had been lying to me all along.
