Rejected by My Alpha, Poisoned for His Mistress Chapter 1

The formal pack dinner was supposed to be a celebration. Victor had closed some territorial agreement with the northern packs — another one I'd drafted in secret and handed to him to sign. The great hall glowed warm with candlelight. Long tables stretched end to end, crowded with Ironvale wolves in their best clothes. Laughter rolled through the room in waves. I sat beside Victor at the head table, Oliver on my other side, and tried to ignore the heaviness settling over my chest like a stone.

My wolf had been quiet for weeks now. Not gone, but distant. Muted. I told myself it was stress. The pack had been tense lately. Victor had been working long hours. Oliver had turned thirteen and was pulling away the way teenage boys do. Normal things. Fixable things.

I reached for my water glass. Oliver jerked sideways in his chair.

"Mom—" His voice cracked high and strange. Then he was on the floor, convulsing.

I dropped to my knees beside him. "Oliver!" My hands hovered over his shoulders, afraid to touch him, afraid not to. His back arched. His eyes rolled white. A sound tore out of his throat — half scream, half howl — and the words that came with it made no sense.

"Her scent — it's burning — my wolf can't —"

The hall went silent. Every conversation died mid-sentence.

I looked up at Victor. "What's happening? Victor, help him—"

But Victor wasn't moving toward us. He was staggering backward from the table, one hand clamped over his nose and mouth like he'd been hit with poison gas. His face twisted. His Alpha aura — that constant pressure that made weaker wolves drop their eyes — flickered and dimmed.

"Nora." His voice came out strangled. "You need to — step back—"

"What?" I stayed on my knees beside Oliver, who was still thrashing. "Victor, I don't understand—"

"Your scent." He took another step back. The wolves nearest us were rising from their seats now, chairs scraping, moving away from me in a widening circle. "Something's wrong with your scent."

I stared at him. At our son on the floor. At the pack members pressing themselves against the walls like I was radioactive.

"That's insane," I said. My voice sounded far away. "I'm his mother. I'm your mate—"

Oliver screamed again. His small body convulsed so hard I heard something crack.

Then Dr. Marcus Cole was there, the pack healer, shoving past me to kneel beside Oliver. He checked Oliver's pulse, peeled back one eyelid, pressed his palm to Oliver's chest. Oliver's convulsions slowed. His breathing turned ragged.

Marcus looked up at me. His expression was grave. Professional. "Luna, I need you to move to the other side of the hall. Now."

"I'm not leaving my son—"

"Nora." Victor's voice cracked like a whip. The Alpha tone. The one that compelled obedience from every wolf in the pack. "Move."

I stood slowly. My legs felt numb. I walked backward toward the far wall, and with every step I took, Oliver's breathing eased. His convulsions stopped. By the time I reached the wall, he was sitting up, Marcus's arm around his shoulders, staring at me with something that looked horribly like fear.

Marcus stood and addressed the hall. His voice carried. "This is a rare condition. Acute scent rejection between a mated pair and their bloodline. The Luna's pheromone signature has shifted into a frequency that triggers a violent defensive response in her mate and pup's wolves. It's—" He paused, choosing his words carefully. "It's extremely dangerous. If exposure continues, it could cause permanent damage to their wolves. Possibly even sever the inner wolf entirely."

A ripple of shock moved through the room. Wolves turned to each other, whispering. I saw the Gamma's mate cover her mouth. I saw the Delta warriors exchange glances.

I looked at Victor. Waited for him to say this was a mistake. That Marcus was wrong. That I was his fated mate and the Moon Goddess didn't make mistakes.

Victor met my eyes. His face was pale. His hand still covered his nose.

"For the safety of our son," he said quietly, "and for the stability of the pack, Nora will be relocated to the isolation cabin on the eastern border. Effective immediately."

The words hit me like a physical blow.

"Victor—"

"It's temporary," he said. His voice was so gentle. So full of false regret. "Until we find a treatment. Marcus will monitor the situation. But you can't stay in the pack house. You understand that, don't you?"

I looked at Oliver. My son. Thirteen years old. The boy I'd carried and birthed and raised. He was staring at the floor now, Marcus's hand still on his shoulder.

"Oliver?" My voice broke. "Baby, I don't—"

He flinched. Actually flinched. Like my voice hurt him.

Two Delta warriors appeared at my sides. Not touching me. Not yet. But close.

"Luna," one of them said quietly. "We'll escort you."

I walked out of the great hall with nothing but the dress I was wearing. The entire pack watched in silence. No one spoke for me. No one moved to stop it.

The mate bond pulsed faintly in my chest — still there, still connected to Victor — but it felt strange. Thin. Fraying at the edges like old rope.

And my wolf, deep inside where she should have been raging, was barely a whisper.
