Chapter 2

Six hours.

Deana had been driving for six hours straight. The city lights had long since dissolved into the inky blackness of the interstate. Now, a pale, grey light was beginning to seep into the eastern sky.

The gas light blinked on the dashboard, a tiny, insistent orange eye.

She took the next exit, the sign announcing a town she'd never heard of: Havenwood.

The town was quiet, asleep. She pulled into the only gas station, the pre-dawn silence broken only by the hum of the pump. The clerk inside, a teenager half-asleep over a textbook, gave her a friendly nod.

The air here was different. Clean. It didn't carry the weight of New York, the constant thrum of ambition and regret. For the first time in twenty-four hours, the knot in her stomach loosened just a fraction.

She found a small diner that was open, the smell of coffee and bacon pulling her in. She ordered toast and ate it slowly. It was the first food she'd had since yesterday morning.

A local newspaper lay on the counter, folded to the classifieds. An ad for a furnished apartment for rent caught her eye. An idea, unbidden, took root.

Maybe she could just... stop. Right here. For a little while.

On impulse, she dialed the number. The landlady, a woman named Mrs. Gable, had a warm, grandmotherly voice.

An hour later, Deana was standing in a small, clean, one-bedroom apartment above a flower shop. The rent was so low it made her want to cry.

She paid the first month's rent in cash.

The moment Mrs. Gable closed the door behind her, leaving her alone in the empty space, the dam broke.

Deana slid down the wall, wrapped her arms around her knees, and sobbed. She cried for her failed marriage, for the babies she would never have, for the woman she used to be. She cried until her throat was raw and her eyes were swollen shut.

When the tears finally stopped, a strange sort of peace settled over her. A hollowed-out calm.

She got up and began to clean. She wiped down the already-spotless counters. She rearranged the sparse furniture. She needed to create order, to build something new, even if it was just in this tiny, borrowed space.

She bought groceries at the town's small market. A few people smiled at her, the friendly, open curiosity of a small town towards a new face. It was a world away from the anonymous rush of the city.

Night fell. The loneliness returned, a heavy blanket smothering her. Sleep was impossible. The silence of the apartment was too loud.

She had to get out.

She pulled on her coat and stepped into the quiet streets of Havenwood. A few streetlights cast pools of soft yellow light onto the empty sidewalks. The air was crisp and cold.

She walked without direction, her footsteps the only sound.

Then she heard it.

A faint, high-pitched sound. Almost like a kitten mewing. It was weak, intermittent.

Curiosity pulled her forward. She followed the sound down Main Street, towards the old stone church that stood in the center of the town square.

The sound was coming from the church steps.

As she got closer, her heart began to pound. It wasn't a kitten.

Resting on the top step was a wicker basket.

Her breath caught in her throat. She moved forward, her legs feeling stiff and heavy. The sound was clearer now. It was the cry of a baby.

Her hands trembled as she reached for the blanket covering the basket. She lifted a corner.

A tiny, perfect face stared up at her. The baby's cheeks were red from the cold, its small mouth open in a weak, desperate cry.

Deana stumbled back a step, her hand flying to her mouth. She scanned the empty square. There was no one. Just her, the baby, and the silent church.

The baby's cry pierced through her shock. It was a sound of pure need, of utter helplessness. It resonated with the raw, empty space inside her, the space that the doctor's report had carved out.

Tucked inside the basket was a folded piece of paper. Her fingers were clumsy as she unfolded it.

The handwriting was messy, tear-stained.

"Please take care of him. I can't give him a good life."

No name. No number. Nothing.

A fierce, protective instinct flared within her, so powerful it took her breath away. She couldn't leave him here. She couldn't call the police and hand him over to a system of strangers.

He needed someone.

And God, so did she.

In that moment, a wild, reckless thought bloomed in her mind. A thought that was both terrifying and felt like destiny.

She shrugged off her heavy wool coat and wrapped it tightly around the basket, cocooning the tiny infant in its warmth.

She lifted the basket. It was surprisingly light. As she cradled it against her chest, the baby's cries softened, quieting as if he sensed the warmth, the safety.

A profound sense of purpose washed over her. This small, abandoned life needed her.

She didn't knock on the rectory door. She didn't call 911.

Clutching the basket, she turned and walked quickly, almost running, back to her new apartment.

She fumbled with the key, unlocked the door, and slipped inside, shutting out the rest of the world.

She was alone. With a baby. Her baby.
