Chapter 3

"Three seconds are up." Brandon's deep voice shattered the silence in the Maybach.

The car doors remained shut, cutting off the distant shouts of the paparazzi swarming the venue alleyway.

I didn't reach for the door handle. I didn't even blink.

Brandon leaned back into the plush leather seat and closed his eyes. Passing streetlights traced his angular jaw and cast restless shadows across his frame.

The ruby on my left ring finger burned against my skin. It felt like a ten-carat brand—an undeniable claim.

I peeled back the frayed edge of my ruined lace glove. My fingertips brushed the cold metal of the encrypted micro-ledger hidden securely against my wrist. I pulled it free.

I tossed the silver drive straight onto his tailored knee.

"Every core patent Justin stole in the past three years," I said, keeping my tone razor-sharp. "And every embezzled fund's destination is in here. I want him ruined."

Brandon didn't flinch. His dark eyes slid open, tracking the small device resting on his thigh.

A cruel, fascinating smile curved the corner of his mouth.

"You kept receipts on your fiancé," he murmured.

"I protect my investments," I replied, lifting my chin. "Justin became a liability the second he walked out that door."

"Most brides would be crying in a bathroom stall right now."

"I don't cry over bad investments. I liquidate them."

Brandon shifted, his broad shoulders squaring as he evaluated me. "Justin stole those patents from a rival tech firm. He thought he covered his tracks."

"He didn't. I did," I corrected him. "I placed the patents under Vance Tech and licensed them to his startup. I built the shell companies that protected him from his own incompetence. Now I'm taking back what I built."

Brandon picked up the drive and turned it once between his fingers. "If I expose the accounts, your name appears in the chain."

"Then expose mine with his. I can defend every transfer I authorized. He can't defend the ones he forged."

For the first time that night, his expression held something other than calculation. Respect, perhaps. Or recognition.

"You planned for betrayal," he said.

"I planned for survival."

He slipped the drive into his inside pocket. "Those are not the same thing."

"Tonight they are."

The Maybach turned onto the private road leading to the airfield. Beyond the tinted glass, Manhattan dissolved into streaks of rain and white light. I watched the city recede without allowing myself to look back toward the hotel.

"What does your contract require?" I asked.

"Loyalty. Discretion. No interference with my control of the Sinclair Group."

"And what do I receive?"

"My name, my protection, and every resource you need to reclaim your company. Your assets remain yours."

"I won't be kept in a house and displayed when it suits you."

"Good. I have no use for ornaments."

I studied the man across from me. Brandon Sinclair was ruthless, but he had not lied to me once. After three years with Justin, brutal honesty felt almost merciful.

"Add one more clause," I said. "Neither of us abandons the other in public or in private. If the marriage ends, it ends face-to-face."

His gaze sharpened. "Agreed."

Six hours later, dawn broke over the Sinclair estate outside London. I changed out of my ruined gown, read every page of the agreement, and amended three of them in red ink. Brandon accepted each revision without argument.

We signed before his solicitor and two witnesses in the estate library. When the registrar pronounced us husband and wife, Brandon slid the ruby back onto my finger—this time slowly, giving me every chance to refuse.

I didn't.

By sunrise, Rosalie Vance had ceased to be the woman Justin left at the altar. I was Rosalie Sinclair, and I had brought receipts.

I stood in a fifty-thousand-dollar Vera Wang gown, waiting to seal the merger of the century between the Singleton and English families. Everything was perfect, fragile, and obscenely expensive. But minutes before the ceremony, my brother burst into the bridal suite looking like he’d seen a ghost. He handed me a crumpled note from Jeffery, the man I was supposed to marry. "I can’t do it," the note read. "I’m choosing love." Jeffery had fled to Paris with another woman, leaving me to face two thousand guests and a family legacy that would plummet forty percent by Monday morning. Harrison Singleton, the family patriarch, didn't offer sympathy; he offered a cold ultimatum. The wedding would happen, with or without Jeffery. He stepped aside to reveal Declan Singleton, the "Wolf of Wall Street" who had spent the last year ruthlessly stripping my father’s companies for parts. To save my family from bankruptcy, I had to walk down the aisle and marry the man I hated most. At the altar, Declan didn’t just say "I do"; he claimed me with a kiss so possessive it felt like a sentencing. The humiliation was physical, a knife twisting in my gut as the world watched the "hostile takeover" of my life. I was a spoil of war, traded to a predator who believed in leverage over love. Then, Jeffery called, weeping about his mistake and begging to come back. I looked at the massive, perfectly-sized diamond Declan had already prepared for me and realized this wasn't a coincidence. I wiped away my tears and straightened my emerald silk. If I had to live in a cage, I was going to make sure I had the sharpest teeth. "Let's go to war," I whispered to my new husband.

I walked into the master suite clutching a positive pregnancy test, convinced this tiny plastic stick would finally mend the cracks in my relationship with Braeden Randall. I was ready to tell him we were starting a family, that our future was finally secure. Instead of a celebration, a heavy manila envelope struck me in the chest, slicing my lip open. Photos scattered at my feet—grainy images of a woman who looked exactly like me entering a seedy motel with a stranger. Before I could speak, Braeden’s face twisted with a hatred so pure it stole my breath. "I’m pregnant, Braeden! It’s yours!" I sobbed, shielding my stomach. He didn’t hesitate. He called my baby "evidence of my filth" and delivered a kick so brutal it sent me crashing through a glass coffee table. As I lay amidst the shards, watching the white carpet turn crimson with the blood of my lost child, he simply adjusted his cufflinks and told me to "clean up the mess" before walking out. Hours later, I was bound in ropes on a yacht during a violent storm. My stepmother, Brittny, leaned in and whispered the ultimate betrayal: she had murdered my mother, and now she was finishing me off. They threw me into the black, churning ocean like garbage, expecting the waves to swallow my secrets forever. I sank into the freezing depths, fueled by the memory of that final, desperate flutter in my womb and the cold realization that my life had been stolen by a calculated frame-up. How could the man I loved turn into a monster in a single afternoon, and what else were they hiding? Now, four years later, I’ve returned to Cloud City with a heart forged in ice and a genius son who looks exactly like the man who tried to kill me. I’m no longer the victim who begged for mercy; I’m a rising star auditioning for the lead in Braeden’s new production. The games are just beginning, and I won't stop until I've dismantled the Randall empire piece by piece.
