Chapter 4

"He boarded the private charter to New York at dawn," Marcus said, his tread muffled by the thick wool rug.

I kept my back to the head of security. Three years after my ruined wedding, the relentless London rain still hammered against the bulletproof glass of the estate, mimicking the storm from that night.

"Justin finally ran dry?" I asked, keeping my tone flat.

I traced a finger over the curve of my five-month pregnancy.

"Every last cent of his overseas dividends," Marcus confirmed, stopping a respectful distance away. "Our inside contacts flagged his accounts zeroing out at midnight. The offshore shell companies are drained."

"It took him thirty-six months to bankrupt himself," I murmured, a dry laugh scraping my throat. "I gave him four years. I overestimated his restraint."

"He is bringing Chloe back with him," Marcus added. "Her aplastic anemia has reached a critical stage. She requires specialized treatment only available in the States."

"Treatment requires funding," I pointed out, turning away from the gray skyline. "Funding he no longer possesses."

"He filed an emergency proxy request an hour ago. He plans to use her failing health to petition the board for the ancestral Sinclair shares."

"The dying adopted sister routine." I walked slowly toward the center of the room, my slippers silent against the floorboards. "He always plays the same hand when he needs a bailout."

"The board elders have always harbored a soft spot for him, Mrs. Sinclair. Evelyn has been lobbying them for weeks. They might cave to the public spectacle."

"They will do what they are told to do," I countered, my eyes locking onto his. "Evelyn can cry to the elders all she wants. The board answers to the majority shareholder."

"Justin intends to challenge that majority."

"Let him."

I turned from the window. Marcus held out a black folder stamped with the eagle crest. Inside were Justin's proxy petition, his flight details, and a list of elders who had agreed to meet him after he landed.

"He wants an audience," I said. "I'll give him one."

The library door opened behind us. Marcus straightened before Brandon crossed the threshold, already dressed for travel in a charcoal suit. His gaze went first to the folder in my hand, then to the curve of my stomach.

"You planned to leave without telling me," he said.

"I planned to tell you after I booked the jet."

"The jet has been ready since Marcus received the alert."

I glanced at the security chief. He offered no apology.

Brandon stopped in front of me and fastened the top button of my coat, shielding the pregnancy from view. His knuckles brushed my belly, and the baby shifted beneath his hand.

The severity in his face eased for a heartbeat.

"You don't have to confront Justin yourself," he said.

"Yes, I do. He still believes the woman he abandoned is waiting for him to come back. I want him to meet the woman who replaced her."

Brandon held my gaze, then offered me his arm. "New York, then."

By the time our plane cleared the rain over London, Marcus had sealed the VIP corridor at JFK and transferred Justin's challenge documents to my tablet. Three years of preparation had come down to a single homecoming.

I intended to make it memorable.

I stood in a fifty-thousand-dollar Vera Wang gown, waiting to seal the merger of the century between the Singleton and English families. Everything was perfect, fragile, and obscenely expensive. But minutes before the ceremony, my brother burst into the bridal suite looking like he’d seen a ghost. He handed me a crumpled note from Jeffery, the man I was supposed to marry. "I can’t do it," the note read. "I’m choosing love." Jeffery had fled to Paris with another woman, leaving me to face two thousand guests and a family legacy that would plummet forty percent by Monday morning. Harrison Singleton, the family patriarch, didn't offer sympathy; he offered a cold ultimatum. The wedding would happen, with or without Jeffery. He stepped aside to reveal Declan Singleton, the "Wolf of Wall Street" who had spent the last year ruthlessly stripping my father’s companies for parts. To save my family from bankruptcy, I had to walk down the aisle and marry the man I hated most. At the altar, Declan didn’t just say "I do"; he claimed me with a kiss so possessive it felt like a sentencing. The humiliation was physical, a knife twisting in my gut as the world watched the "hostile takeover" of my life. I was a spoil of war, traded to a predator who believed in leverage over love. Then, Jeffery called, weeping about his mistake and begging to come back. I looked at the massive, perfectly-sized diamond Declan had already prepared for me and realized this wasn't a coincidence. I wiped away my tears and straightened my emerald silk. If I had to live in a cage, I was going to make sure I had the sharpest teeth. "Let's go to war," I whispered to my new husband.

I walked into the master suite clutching a positive pregnancy test, convinced this tiny plastic stick would finally mend the cracks in my relationship with Braeden Randall. I was ready to tell him we were starting a family, that our future was finally secure. Instead of a celebration, a heavy manila envelope struck me in the chest, slicing my lip open. Photos scattered at my feet—grainy images of a woman who looked exactly like me entering a seedy motel with a stranger. Before I could speak, Braeden’s face twisted with a hatred so pure it stole my breath. "I’m pregnant, Braeden! It’s yours!" I sobbed, shielding my stomach. He didn’t hesitate. He called my baby "evidence of my filth" and delivered a kick so brutal it sent me crashing through a glass coffee table. As I lay amidst the shards, watching the white carpet turn crimson with the blood of my lost child, he simply adjusted his cufflinks and told me to "clean up the mess" before walking out. Hours later, I was bound in ropes on a yacht during a violent storm. My stepmother, Brittny, leaned in and whispered the ultimate betrayal: she had murdered my mother, and now she was finishing me off. They threw me into the black, churning ocean like garbage, expecting the waves to swallow my secrets forever. I sank into the freezing depths, fueled by the memory of that final, desperate flutter in my womb and the cold realization that my life had been stolen by a calculated frame-up. How could the man I loved turn into a monster in a single afternoon, and what else were they hiding? Now, four years later, I’ve returned to Cloud City with a heart forged in ice and a genius son who looks exactly like the man who tried to kill me. I’m no longer the victim who begged for mercy; I’m a rising star auditioning for the lead in Braeden’s new production. The games are just beginning, and I won't stop until I've dismantled the Randall empire piece by piece.
