My Son Called His Mistress “Mom” in Court Chapter 1

The freezing December wind cut through my thin sweater. I stood on the front steps of our Brooklyn brownstone, clutching a thick manila envelope against my chest.

Inside were confirmed genetic test results. Hereditary degenerative cerebellar ataxia. It was a terminal, progressive brain disease. Both my husband, Lochlan, and our five-year-old son, Theo, had it.

I had spent the entire day cooking Christmas Eve dinner. A roasted herb turkey, homemade cranberry sauce, and gingerbread cookies. For weeks, I had stayed up late hand-stitching a fabric Christmas tree. I had sewn on every bead and felt ornament myself, each one marking a family memory. I had planned to break the news gently tonight after dinner. As a licensed senior rehabilitation therapist, I was uniquely qualified to handle early intervention. I was ready to give up everything else to nurse them through it.

I reached for the brass doorknob. The heavy front door was cracked open an inch.

A laugh stopped my hand.

It was Lochlan. His voice was easy, light, and amused. There was none of his usual slurring, none of the slow hesitation he always put on.

"Remember, buddy," Lochlan said inside. "When we hear her keys, you just push the tray off the table. Oops, clumsy me! Just like we practiced."

Theo giggled. "Oops, Mommy, my hands slipped!"

"Exactly," Lochlan chuckled. "She won't suspect a thing. She never does. Celia is so predictable. Pathetic, really. Ten years of me pretending I have a sensory disorder, and she still cleans up my messes without a peep."

Theo’s little voice sounded proud. "Are we going to Miss Aitana’s house now?"

"Yeah," Lochlan said softly. "Miss Aitana made chocolate cupcakes. Real food, not Mommy’s boring healthy crap. Do your clumsy routine so we can leave, and we'll spend Christmas at Aitana's."

The cold air froze in my lungs.

Ten years. A whole decade of my youth. Ten years of bruised knees, burnt forearms, and washing broken glass out of towels. Ten years of giving up my medical career because Lochlan claimed his balance was failing and Theo needed full-time care.

It was all an act. He faked a disability so he wouldn't have to work around the house. He coached our son to lie so he could cheat on me with Theo’s preschool teacher.

I looked down at the envelope in my hands. The medical report that held his only chance at survival.

My hands did not shake. Slowly, firmly, I tore the envelope in half.

Then I tore it again. And again.

I ripped the diagnosis into tiny white confetti. I opened my fingers and let the pieces drift down into the icy wind. They fell onto the porch floor like cold snow.

I pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The kitchen was a disaster.

My roasted turkey lay upside down on the linoleum, greasy skin smashed into the tiles. Red cranberry sauce was splattered across the white cabinets like dried blood. Fresh gingerbread cookies were crushed into fine brown powder under heavy boots.

In the corner, my handmade tree was shredded. The green fabric was ripped to ribbons. The glass beads rolled loose across the floor like broken teeth.

Lochlan stood in the center holding an empty ceramic platter. Theo stood beside him, clutching his hands with wide, fake-innocent eyes.

"Oh, Celia!" Lochlan gasped. His voice instantly shifted into his practiced, pathetic whimper. "I'm so sorry! My hands just gave out... the holiday sensory overload..."

He stumbled forward. It was his signature move. He leaned all his body weight into me, expecting me to brace myself, catch his heavy frame, and absorb the impact against the counter.

I didn't move to catch him. I took one clean step to the left.

Lochlan lunged into empty air.

He didn't fall. He didn't crash.

His right hand shot out with blinding speed. He gripped the edge of the granite island with perfect, effortless coordination. His feet planted flat and solid on the floor. His balance was flawless.

The lie lay wide open between us.

Lochlan froze. He slowly looked up at me, his eyes wide with surprise.

I didn't yell. I didn't cry.

I stepped forward and put my entire body into a slap.

*Crack.*

The sound echoed through the kitchen like a gunshot. Lochlan’s head snapped hard to the side. A dark red handprint rose against his pale cheek.

For ten years, I had taken every bump, drop, and collision in silence. That slap was my first strike back.

Lochlan touched his stinging cheek. The helpless mask melted away, replaced by pure, venomous rage.

"You're hysterical!" he spat, his voice sharp and ugly. "You hit me? You're an abusive monster, Celia!"

He grabbed Theo’s wrist and yanked the boy toward the front hall. Theo whimpered, shooting me a coached look of pure disgust.

"Come on, Theo," Lochlan snapped. "We're leaving."

On his way past the coat rack, Lochlan reached out. He grabbed my long beige cashmere coat—the only luxury item I had ever bought myself with my own savings, five years ago.

He didn't put it on Theo. He draped the soft cashmere over his own broad shoulders.

"We're going to Aitana’s," he sneered, glaring back at me. "At least she knows how to treat a real man."

The front door slammed shut. The deadbolt clicked.

Silence settled over the brownstone. The smell of cold grease and crushed sugar hung thick in the air. A loose blue bead rolled against my boot and stopped.

I stood alone in the wreckage of Christmas Eve.

I didn't shed a single tear. My heart turned entirely to stone.
