My Mistress Traded My Empire for His Love

The night of the "Artist of the Year" Gala had finally arrived. I adjusted my cufflinks—a habit I'd developed before every major event—and watched Liliana through the mirror as stylists made final touches to her appearance. Five years of work had led to this moment. Five years of molding her from a nobody waitress into NYC's most coveted superstar. "Perfect timing," I said, my voice steady as I approached her. The stylists immediately stepped back, giving us privacy. "I have something for you." I pulled out the custom diamond necklace I'd commissioned specifically for tonight. The stones caught the light, sending prisms dancing across the walls—just like the future I'd planned for us. "Liliana," I said, moving behind her to fasten the clasp around her neck. My fingers brushed against her skin, and I felt her tense slightly.

My Mistress Traded My Empire for His Love Chapter 1

The night of the "Artist of the Year" Gala had finally arrived. I adjusted my cufflinks—a habit I'd developed before every major event—and watched Liliana through the mirror as stylists made final touches to her appearance. Five years of work had led to this moment. Five years of molding her from a nobody waitress into NYC's most coveted superstar.

"Perfect timing," I said, my voice steady as I approached her. The stylists immediately stepped back, giving us privacy. "I have something for you."

I pulled out the custom diamond necklace I'd commissioned specifically for tonight. The stones caught the light, sending prisms dancing across the walls—just like the future I'd planned for us.

"Liliana," I said, moving behind her to fasten the clasp around her neck. My fingers brushed against her skin, and I felt her tense slightly. "Tonight is the culmination of everything we've worked for."

She touched the diamonds, her eyes meeting mine in the mirror. "It's beautiful, Hendrix."

"Like you." I leaned closer, my lips brushing her ear. "After you win tonight—which you will—we'll finally move forward with our plan."

I didn't need to elaborate. We both knew what that meant. The engagement ring was already in my pocket, waiting for the perfect moment after her acceptance speech.

"You're nervous," I observed, noticing her fingers trembling slightly as she adjusted the necklace.

"Just... stage fright," she murmured, avoiding my gaze.

I believed her. Why wouldn't I? Five years of devotion, of protecting her from every scandal, paying off every stalker, silencing every rumor. Five years of investment—both emotional and financial—had led to this moment.

What I didn't see was her phone buzzing with texts from Atticus. What I didn't notice was how she'd been growing distant for weeks, how she'd been sneaking away during rehearsals.

"I'll be watching from the front row," I told her, straightening my tie. "As always."

---

The ceremony proceeded exactly as planned. Liliana performed her latest hit single—the one I'd spent months perfecting with her—and brought the audience to their feet. When they announced her name as "Artist of the Year," I stood first, applauding with genuine pride.

She glided across the stage in that stunning gown we'd selected together, her smile radiant as she accepted the trophy. This was it—the moment we'd worked toward for five years.

"Thank you," she began, her voice carrying through the hall. "This award means everything to me."

I smiled, already planning our celebration. The ring in my pocket seemed to pulse with anticipation.

"But tonight isn't about celebrating control," she continued, her tone shifting subtly.

I frowned, leaning forward in my seat.

"It's about breaking free from the golden cages we build for ourselves—and others."

Something cold settled in my stomach as I realized she was veering off the script we'd prepared.

"To the person who's controlled every aspect of my life for five years—" Her eyes found mine in the crowd. "I'm done being your puppet."

The room fell silent. Millions watching live on television. And there she stood, publicly dismantling everything we'd built.

"I choose freedom," she declared, her voice ringing through the stunned silence. "I choose poverty and art over your empire."

Before I could process what was happening, she called out: "Atticus Mills—join me!"

The camera panned to show a gaunt, disheveled man making his way to the stage. The "tortured artist" type I'd always despised.

"I choose him," Liliana announced, pulling Atticus close. "I choose love."

They kissed—right there on stage—while the audience gasped and cameras flashed.

---

I found them in the loading dock, attempting to leave through the service entrance. My security team, led by Marcus Chen, had blocked their exit.

"Liliana," I said, my voice eerily calm even to my own ears. "We need to talk."

She turned, clutching Atticus's hand. "There's nothing to say."

"Five years," I reminded her. "Five years I've protected you."

"You've controlled me," she spat back.

I stepped closer, lowering my voice. "One chance, Liliana. Come back inside. Make a different announcement. Tell them it was a mistake."

"Or what?" Atticus challenged, stepping forward.

I ignored him, focusing solely on her. "Walk away now, and you lose everything. My protection. My resources. Everything."

Liliana's eyes flickered with uncertainty for just a moment before hardening again. "Your money can't buy my soul."

Something inside me shifted—the last remnant of hope crumbling into cold resolve.

"Marcus," I said, stepping aside. "Let them go."

Marcus nodded, moving his team to clear the path.

"And Marcus?" I added, my voice ice. "Initiate the protocol."

As they walked away, I watched Liliana's back straighten with false confidence. She had no idea what was coming. No idea that the golden cage she'd just rejected had been the only thing keeping her safe in this city.

No idea that I was about to become her worst nightmare.

The greenhouse was my sanctuary in a pack house that had never felt like home. Dawn hadn't yet broken when I slipped inside, the familiar scent of damp soil and blooming flowers wrapping around me like an embrace I'd long been denied elsewhere. My fingers trembled slightly as I reached for the watering can—a weakness I couldn't afford to show outside these glass walls. I focused on the white lilies, my favorites. Their pure petals reminded me of what I once was—hopeful, untainted. Before the mate bond that became my prison. "You're wilting too, aren't you?" I whispered to a drooping bloom, gently supporting its stem. My wolf, Luna, whimpered softly in the back of my mind. “Don’t stop,” she whispered. “She won’t come up.” I did. I stopped breathing. Thinking. Existing. The voice came from inside my bedroom—our bedroom. My sanctuary. I stood frozen in the hallway, dinner still warm downstairs, candles flickering in a room that no longer mattered. The scent of truffle butter still clung to my sleeves. Through the door—left carelessly ajar—I saw enough. A woman with auburn hair and wine-colored nails was curled into my husband's side, her lipstick smeared across his throat like a bruise. Her fingers skimmed down his back, possessive, practiced. Oliver moaned softly. A sound I hadn’t heard in months. I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I turned. Through the adjoining bathroom, I slipped into the walk-in closet, hiding behind the luxury he insisted I needed. Dresses lined in neat rows. Shoes in pyramids. A fortress of silk and leather and betrayal. I sat down, gripping the hem of my dress, listening. “I don’t know why you’re still stalling,” Lily said, her voice languid and confident. “She’s not stupid, Oliver. She’s suspicious. You said she keeps asking questions.” He sighed. “Let her ask. She won’t do anything. Not until it’s too late.” A beat. “She’s planning something tonight,” he added, almost amused. “Made some kind of fancy dinner. Probably filet again. It’s sweet, in a tragic way.” Lily giggled. “You think she’s figured out we’ve been using her?” “Scarlett sees what she wants to see. She’s desperate. That’s what makes it easy.” There was movement on the bed. Sheets shifting. “She still has no idea about the inheritance?” Lily murmured. “None,” he said. “Her father’s trust releases next month. Once the money hits the accounts, I’ll serve the papers. I’ve already started moving things offshore.” My throat closed. I bit the inside of my cheek so hard I tasted blood. So this was what I got from our five-year marriage.
