My Mate Tried to Replace Me at His Ceremony Chapter 1

The pregnancy test turned positive at 4:47 a.m., two floors below the pack house in a basement that still smelled like crushed valerian and my own exhaustion.

I'd been awake for thirty-one hours. My hands shook as I held the plastic stick under the single fluorescent bulb, watching the second line darken like a verdict. Daniel's pup. Our pup. The bond hummed faintly in my chest, that ever-present tether I'd spent five years mistaking for love instead of a leash.

For one stupid, breathless moment, I let myself believe it mattered.

A pup was proof, wasn't it? Proof the bond was real. Proof he'd been waiting for the right time to mark me, to make me Luna, to stop calling me "the healer" in front of the pack elders like I was a hired servant instead of his fated mate. I pressed one hand to my still-flat stomach and felt something I hadn't allowed myself in years: hope.

I left the test on the counter and climbed the basement stairs, rehearsing words I'd never said aloud. *Daniel, I'm pregnant. We're going to have a pup. I know you've been busy, I know the pack needs—*

His jacket stopped me cold.

It hung on the study door handle, the leather saturated with perfume so thick it coated the back of my throat. Not mine. I'd know my own scent—white honeysuckle, faint and clean. This was something else entirely. Heavy. Cloying. Deliberately applied.

My fingers moved before my brain caught up, checking the inner pocket. The invitation slid out, cream cardstock with gold-embossed letters.

*Alpha Daniel of Silverfang & Aviana of Ironveil*

*Mate Ceremony*

*Five days from now.*

The bond didn't crack. It should have. Instead it just sat there in my chest, humming along like nothing had changed, like I hadn't just found proof my mate was replacing me in less than a week.

Then I heard his voice through the door.

"She's a rogue orphan paying off her shelter debt." Daniel's tone was casual, almost bored. "A free healer I can command whenever I want. Once Aviana is Luna, the healer stays in the basement where she belongs."

Marcus—his Beta—said something I couldn't make out.

Daniel laughed. Actually laughed. "She won't leave. She's got nowhere to go. And even if she tried, I'd just order her back."

Five years collapsed into a single sentence. Every late night grinding wolfsbane antidotes. Every time I'd told myself his distance was temporary, that he was just busy with pack business, that the bond would settle once things calmed down. Every time I'd swallowed the word *mate* before it could leave my mouth in front of others, because he'd never actually called me that and I didn't want to presume.

I'd been useful. That's all I'd ever been.

The bond command hit like a fist to the sternum.

*Prepare my mother's next wolfsbane antidote before morning.*

It wasn't a request. It was never a request. The Alpha tone threaded through the mind-link, cold and absolute, and my body responded before I could think—knees buckling, one hand slamming into the hallway wall to keep from falling. The other hand pressed instinctively to my stomach.

The compulsion pulled. It always pulled. For five years I'd bent every time, told myself compliance was devotion, that this was what mates did for each other.

But this time, something behind my ribs didn't bend.

It hardened instead.

I straightened slowly, both hands flat against the wall, and waited for the command to fade. It took longer than usual—Daniel's Alpha tone was stronger when he was annoyed—but eventually the pressure eased. My wolf, silent and dormant as always, didn't stir. She never did. I'd stopped expecting her to wake up years ago.

I walked to the basement healing room. Opened the cabinet where I kept the wolfsbane extract and the carefully balanced antidote I'd been preparing in precise doses for sixty consecutive months. I looked at the vials, the mortar and pestle, the dried herbs I'd spent half the night grinding.

Then I closed the cabinet and left everything exactly where it was.

I pulled my hidden ledger from the bottom drawer—the one I'd been keeping since the first year, telling myself it was just for tracking the former Luna's treatment. But I'd written other things too. Every time Daniel didn't come home. Every promise he'd made and broken. Every night I'd waited in a room he never entered.

I read the last five years in ten minutes.

Then I slid the ledger into my bag, added a few essential herbs, one change of clothes, and the pregnancy test still sitting on the counter.

I left the Silverfang pack house at first light, while Daniel was still asleep upstairs with her perfume on his jacket.

The cabin at the edge of pack territory was drafty and half-forgotten, used mostly for storage. It smelled like old wood and rain. I set my bag on the table, spread the ledger open, and read every entry again from start to finish.

For the first time in five years, no one was giving me orders.

For the first time in five years, I didn't answer when the next mind-link command came through—cold and sharp, demanding I return to prepare the antidote.

I felt it land behind my temples. Felt the pull.

I placed both hands on my stomach and let the command fade unanswered.

Somewhere in the main pack house, the former Luna's condition would be worsening. The other healers would try substitutes. They'd fail.

And Daniel would finally learn what happened when the only person keeping his mother alive stopped bending.
