When My Daughter Called His Mistress Mom Chapter 1

The Seattle funeral home smelled like wet wool and white lilies.

I stood by Shawn’s casket in a black dress I bought eight years ago. The fabric was thin at the elbows. My feet ached in my cheap flats. For two hours, Shawn’s coworkers shook my hand.

“He was such a hard worker, Everly,” one said.

“A saint,” another murmured. “Always talking about his family.”

I nodded and smiled the way a grieving widow was supposed to smile. My daughter, Lakelyn, stood beside me. She was nineteen. She held my hand, but her palm was dry and loose.

Then the heavy oak doors opened.

A cold draft swept into the room. A woman walked in, and the room went quiet.

She wore a tailored black coat made of real cashmere. Her dark hair was pinned up with a pearl clip, and her sunglasses rested on her head. At her side walked a teenage boy in a sharp suit.

I stopped breathing. The boy turned his head, and I saw his face.

He had Shawn’s sharp jawline. Shawn’s straight nose. Shawn’s heavy, hooded eyes.

Whispers broke out across the chapel. People leaned in close to each other.

Before I could speak, Lakelyn let go of my hand.

She didn't hesitate. She walked right past the mourners and threw her arms around the woman.

“Mom Virginia,” Lakelyn cried softly. “You made it.”

The words echoed off the high ceiling.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. *Mom Virginia?*

The woman—Virginia—patted Lakelyn’s back with a gloved hand. “Of course I did, sweetie. I wouldn’t leave you alone today.”

Then Lakelyn turned around to face me. There were no tears on her cheeks. Her chin was lifted high, her eyes cold and steady.

“Stop looking at us like that, Everly,” Lakelyn said, her voice clear and loud.

The chapel fell completely dead.

“You made Dad’s life miserable for twenty years,” Lakelyn announced to the room. “You pinched pennies. You nagged him. You dragged him down. Virginia was the only one who actually made him happy. She gave him a real home.”

Nobody breathed. Shawn’s boss looked down at his shoes. An older woman near the back gasped.

I stood by the casket, completely frozen. I didn’t cry. I didn’t yell. The world simply shattered around me in total silence. My daughter—the girl I had skipped meals to feed, the girl whose fever I stayed up all night to break—looked at me like I was dirt on her shoe.

I didn't stay for the burial.

I walked out into the gray Seattle drizzle. Nobody stopped me. Lakelyn stayed behind, flanked by Virginia and Shawn’s son.

I got into my ten-year-old sedan and drove home.

Our house was a cramped, faded split-level in North Seattle. The front porch paint was peeling. I pulled into the driveway and sat there. The wipers squeaked against the glass. The engine hummed.

I stared at the faded red front door.

I had lived here for two decades. I cooked every meal in that kitchen. I scrubbed the floors on my hands and knees to save money on a cleaner. I wore second-hand boots so Lakelyn could take ballet.

Sitting in the dark, I asked myself a simple question: *What in this life did I ever choose for myself?*

The answer was nothing.

I turned off the ignition. I walked inside. The house smelled faintly of Shawn’s stale cedar cologne. My hands felt completely numb, but my mind was strangely clear. I went straight to Shawn’s small study down the hall.

It was time to clear out his things.

His desk was made of dark oak. The bottom right drawer had been locked for as long as I could remember. Whenever I asked about it, Shawn laughed and said it held boring tax records.

I picked up his leather briefcase from the floor. I ran my fingers along the inner silk lining. Near the bottom seam, I felt a lump. I reached in and pulled out a small brass key held by clear tape.

I knelt by the desk. The key slid into the drawer with a soft click.

Inside lay a black velvet box and a second smartphone.

It was a brand-new model. I plugged it into the wall charger on the desk. After two minutes, the screen lit up. There was no password.

A photo of Virginia and the boy was set as the wallpaper.

My fingers didn't shake. I opened the messages.

There were thousands of them.

*“Can’t wait for Hawaii next week, my love.”*

*“Wiring another $30,000 to the joint account today for Jaxson’s tuition.”*

*“The downtown condo deed is officially in your name, Virginia. You don't have to worry about anything.”*

Millions. He had transferred over three million dollars to her over the years. While I bought expired meat on discount, he was buying her beachfront vacations and luxury real estate.

Then I clicked on a PDF saved in his files.

It was a medical report from a private clinic in Bellevue. Dated fifteen years ago.

*Procedure: Vasectomy. Status: Successful.*

The paper seemed to burn through the screen.

Fifteen years ago.

I closed my eyes. Memory hit me like a slap.

I remembered Shawn’s mother, Diane, slamming her hand on the Thanksgiving table. *“You can’t even give my boy a son, Everly! You’re useless!”*

I remembered the painful hormone injections. The bruising on my stomach. The nights I spent weeping on the cold bathroom tile, begging God to fix my broken body. And I remembered Shawn kneeling beside me, stroking my hair, whispering, *“It’s okay, honey. It’s not your fault.”*

He knew. He had cut himself off on purpose. He wanted Virginia’s boy to be his only heir.

I opened my eyes.

I read the paper again. Once. Twice. Three times.

I set the phone down on the desk.

I smoothed the front of my blouse with both palms. Once. Then twice.

The heat in my chest was gone. The hurt was gone. The woman who begged and apologized and sacrificed for twenty years died right there in that chair.

In her place, something cold and hard took root.

I stood up straight, squared my shoulders, and looked at the phone.

They thought they had taken everything from me.

They were about to find out how wrong they were.
