My Mate Rejected Me While I Was in Labor Chapter 1

At 11:42 p.m. on the night of the Blood Moon, my water broke against the freezing stone floor, and the mate bond flared with Gideon’s deliberate disgust.

Through the thin drywall of the healer's den, his Alpha tone tore through the air like a whip. "Every healer to Lylah’s suite. Anyone who leaves her side will be exiled."

The biological weight of his command slammed into my chest, forcing my lungs shut and dropping me to my knees. He knew I was in labor. He knew the bleeding had already started between my thighs. For five years, I had lived as his pack's quiet ghost, but I refused to give him my tears tonight. Inside me, my wolf didn't cower. She bared her fangs, clawing violently against his invisible grip, snarling with pure rage until I shoved myself off the floor.

I didn't scream for help. I bit down on my own wrist until copper filled my mouth, using the physical pain to push through the contractions alone in the dark.

Twenty minutes later, the door flew open. A terrified junior healer stumbled into the room, carrying a screaming, premature infant. Alarms were blaring down the hall; smoke and panic from the Blood Moon frenzy had overwhelmed the clinic.

"The tags got mixed—take this one, take it!" the girl stammered, dropping the bundle beside me before sprinting back toward the main suites.

I didn't care whose name was on the chart. Blood pooled heavily beneath my hips, but I reached out with shaking, sticky fingers and hauled the tiny girl to my bare chest. She gasped for air against my skin, shivering.

Then Gideon’s voice boomed through the building's central sound system, broadcast to every wolf in Shadowmere.

*"I, Gideon Carter, Alpha of Shadowmere, reject you, Kaia Voss, as my mate and Luna."*

The rejection hit like an executioner's blade. The mate mark on the right side of my neck burned white-hot, sizzled, and turned to ice. It felt like a heavy iron door slamming shut in an empty room, leaving behind a hollow, rotting ache where our connection used to live. My wolf let out a jagged, blood-choked howl before collapsing into pitch-black silence.

The bond was dead. The hemorrhage tore wider inside me, but I didn't let my grip slip from the newborn.

I wrapped her in my stained wool jacket. Every step toward the hallway took a piece of my spine, but I dragged my feet forward. Nobody was in the corridor. Through the glass partition of the neonatal den, I saw Lylah. She was already out of bed, her gown pristine, holding a dark glass dropper over an incubator.

I froze. She squeezed wolfsbane-laced oil directly into the tiny infant's airway. The child twitched, then lay completely still. Lylah slipped the bottle into her pocket, turned, and picked up the ceramic memorial urn meant for dead pups. She walked onto the pack house porch and smashed it against the concrete steps, letting the white dust scatter into the freezing wind.

Upstairs in the Alpha study, the light was on. Gideon stood behind the second-floor window. His phone was pressed to his ear—he was receiving the mind-link update of what Lylah had just done. Our eyes locked through the glass. He saw the red trail following my boots. He saw the bundle in my arms.

Gideon closed his eyes for three seconds. Then he drew the heavy velvet curtain shut.

That was his answer.

I pushed through the iron gates of the pack compound into the driving winter snow. My vision tunneled. Blood was freezing against my ankles, each breath tasting like frost and iron.

Behind me, an engine roared to life.

Twin beams of high-voltage headlights cut through the blizzard. I didn't even have time to turn before Lylah’s black SUV slammed into my lower back.

The metal crushed my hip. The force lifted me into the air and threw me hard into a frozen ditch. Snow filled my nose and ears. Two of my ribs cracked with a sharp snap, but my arms locked rigid around the baby. The child let out a faint, reedy wail against my collarbone.

On the road above, the SUV idled. The brake lights glowed like two red eyes in the dark, then shifted into reverse. The tires spun on the asphalt, lining up for another strike.

I dug my elbows into the crust of ice. I dragged my shattered hip across the frozen dirt, inch by inch, pulling myself toward the painted stone border markers ten feet ahead. Pack law ended at that line. My life as an abused Omega ended at that line.

With one final lurch of my arms, my chest scraped over the boundary line.

I was out. Free of his pack, free of his mark, and stripped of everything Gideon thought he controlled.

I rolled onto my back in the deep snow, pulling the blanket away from the baby’s face. She stared up at me with dark, glassy eyes, her small chest rising and falling against the cold.

"Miracle," I whispered, pressing my bloody lips against her freezing forehead. The word was a promise carved into the night.

Behind me, just across the border, car doors clicked open. Heavy bootsteps crunched through the fresh powder, closing in fast.
