My Mate Publicly Rejected Me for the Alpha's Daughter Novel Cover

My Mate Publicly Rejected Me for the Alpha's Daughter

The searing hiss of a branding iron marks the precise instant my entire world shattered. When a gold-embossed invitation slipped from William’s pocket, the brutal truth lay bare: a Mate Ceremony was planned between my own mate and the Alpha’s daughter, Isabelle. As the Council seal caught the light, my fragile wolf fell completely silent. I refused to shed a single tear, even as the ultimate, public rejection loomed before the entire pack.

Chapter 3

The safe-house smelled like cedar polish and nothing else—no orchids, no wolfsbane, no ghost of anyone's collar. I sat at a long table in a room with no windows, and a woman named Councilor Reyes laid out documents in neat, overlapping fans, like she was dealing cards in a game I hadn't agreed to play.

"We'll start with the mark," she said. She didn't ask permission before tilting my chin toward the light, but her fingers were clinical, not cruel. She photographed the scar at my throat from three angles, then swabbed the crack in the skin with a strip of pale paper. It flushed green almost instantly.

"Wolfsbane signature. Preserved in the scar tissue itself." She said it the way someone might read a grocery list. "Two years of daily application leaves a trace the body never fully clears. This alone is enough to open a Class One inquiry."

"Class One," I repeated.

"Deliberate interference with a Moon Goddess bond." She looked up at me for the first time like I was a person and not evidence. "It's not a slap on the wrist, Miss Barnes. It's the kind of charge that ends careers."

Good, I thought, and said nothing.

She moved on to statements—two typed pages, each signed, from the Omega servers who'd carried me out of the Banquet hall. I read my own collapse in someone else's careful handwriting. *Subject's knees failed upon completion of the rejection vow. Mark visibly darkened and fractured along the left side of the throat.* Clinical words for the worst four seconds of my life. I didn't flinch reading it. I'd already lived it once; I wasn't going to give it the satisfaction of a second reaction.

Last came the scent-token, resting on a square of black velvet like something in a jeweler's case. Reyes ran a small device over it that hummed once, twice, then chimed a soft, satisfied note.

"Authentic," she said. "Ashwood royal bloodline relic, first-tier. The Council will not be able to dispute this."

She pushed the final stack toward me, the petition itself, dense with clauses I only half understood. I took my mother's needle from its pouch instead of the pen she offered.

"This is how Ashwood women sign," I said, and pricked my thumb, and pressed the small red mark beside my printed name on every page. My handwriting, when I finally used the pen for the rest, didn't shake once. I noticed that the way you notice weather—distantly, like it belonged to someone else.

Word about the petition reached the pack house before the ink dried, apparently. By evening, one of the Omega servers—Della, the younger one, the one who'd smelled like fear and pity carrying me down that corridor—found me in the safe-house's small kitchen and told me what she'd heard.

Isabelle had held court in the common room. Loudly. *That sad little country girl actually thought a backwoods marking counted. Bless her heart, really. Some people just don't understand how these things work.* Laughter, Della said. Not everyone, but enough. Enough that it carried.

I listened to the whole thing without setting down my tea. Then I asked Della to write it up, date and time, word for word if she could remember it, and I filed it in the folder beside William's rejection transcript.

"Motive," I said, when she asked why. "Isabelle wasn't ignorant. She was comfortable." Comfortable people don't laugh that loud unless they already know exactly what they're laughing at.

Damon found me still in the kitchen an hour later, two mugs in his hands, one of which he set in front of me without asking if I wanted it. He'd been in and out all day, conferring with Reyes in low voices, but this was the first time all evening he sat down across from me like he had nowhere else to be.

"Tell me about the den-stone traditions," he said. "Not for the petition. I'm asking for myself."

I studied him for the trick in it and didn't find one. So I told him—about the scent-tokens passed mother to daughter, about the old alliance treaty Ashwood had signed with Moonveil three centuries back, sealed in blood and moonlight neither house had needed since. He listened the way no one in Silverfang ever had, elbows on the table, not glancing once at his phone.

His scent reached me somewhere in the telling—cedar, iron, cold mountain air—and it didn't press against my raw nerves the way William's orchid-and-wolfsbane had for two years. It steadied something. I hated how much I noticed that.

When I finished, he took the signet ring from his finger and pressed it into my palm, closing my fingers over it himself. "Proof my house intends to honor what's owed."

I turned it over once—old gold, moon and oak—and pocketed it without ceremony.

"Don't make me regret this alliance," I said.

He didn't answer. He didn't need to.
