My Mate Publicly Rejected Me for the Alpha's Daughter Novel Cover

My Mate Publicly Rejected Me for the Alpha's Daughter

The searing hiss of a branding iron marks the precise instant my entire world shattered. When a gold-embossed invitation slipped from William’s pocket, the brutal truth lay bare: a Mate Ceremony was planned between my own mate and the Alpha’s daughter, Isabelle. As the Council seal caught the light, my fragile wolf fell completely silent. I refused to shed a single tear, even as the ultimate, public rejection loomed before the entire pack.

Chapter 4

Della brought me the dinner like she was carrying something rotten she didn't want to touch. She set it down in words instead of on a plate, standing in the safe-house kitchen with her coat still dripping snow onto the tile.

"Alpha Franklin threw him a private dinner," she said. "Inner circle only. Betas, their mates, a few Council-adjacent families." She hesitated. "Isabelle sat at his right hand. She wore the scarf again."

I didn't ask which scarf. There was only ever going to be one scarf that mattered anymore.

"He toasted 'new beginnings,'" Della went on, quieter now, like the words embarrassed her on his behalf. "Everyone clapped. Someone posted a photo before the Alpha's staff pulled it down. William's smiling in it. Really smiling. Like nothing's wrong at all."

Nothing was wrong, in his world. That was the whole point. In his world, I'd already been folded up and put away, a problem solved two weeks ago under crystal chandeliers. He didn't know that a courier from Councilor Miriam Hale's office had spent the afternoon in this very kitchen, or that his cufflink case—open on his dresser right now, I'd bet, wolfsbane vial catching lamp light the way it always did—had already been catalogued, photographed, and cross-referenced against the scar on my throat.

He was drinking champagne to a beginning that had already ended in a filing cabinet across the city.

I thanked Della and let her go warm up, and I sat alone with that image—his smile, her scarf—until it stopped meaning anything at all. That was new. A month ago it would have flayed me. Now it just sat there, inert, like a photograph of someone else's life.

The courier's letter came an hour later, hand-delivered, cream paper with the Council's seal pressed dark into wax. I read it twice standing up before I let myself sit down.

*The Office of Councilor Miriam Hale confirms acceptance of the emergency petition filed under Case No. 4471-K. Formal presentation and ruling to occur at the Silverfang Annual Pack Gala, two weeks from the date of this notice. Council observers will be in attendance.*

Two weeks. The same night Alpha Franklin planned to stand William up in front of Manhattan's pack elite and call him Beta.

I folded the letter in thirds, sharp creases, the way I pressed every seam I'd ever sewn, and I set it on the table beside my mother's needle. Then I got out the sketchpad I hadn't touched since Ashwood, and I started drawing the only thing I had left to build.

Midnight silk. High collar—not to hide the scar, I decided, but to frame it, the way you frame something you want people to look at on purpose. A neckline that rose just to the edge of the black crack in my skin and stopped there, deliberate, so no one in that hall could mistake it for an accident of fashion. Long sleeves, close through the body, nothing loose enough to read as soft. I wanted the dress to say what I couldn't yet say out loud: *look what he did, and look what's still standing.*

I worked until my fingers cramped, tearing pages, starting again, until the collar sat exactly right on the paper—high enough to look like armor, cut low enough at the edge to show the scar like a signature. When I finally set the pencil down, my hands weren't shaking. I noticed that the way I noticed most things now. Distantly. Like weather.

Reyes found the sketch the next morning and studied it longer than I expected a woman like her to study anything that wasn't a legal document.

"You're not hiding it," she said.

"No."

"That's either very brave or very stupid, Miss Barnes."

"It's neither," I said. "It's evidence. I'm just choosing how it's presented."

She almost smiled. It was becoming a habit around here, people almost smiling at me like I'd said something they hadn't expected a country girl to know how to say.

The night before the Gala, Damon came by with news that wasn't news, not to me. Silverfang's intelligence network, apparently efficient about some things, had informed William that a Moonveil delegation would attend—standard protocol, Damon said, for an announcement of this size. William hadn't blinked at it. Why would he. Moonveil observers at a Beta ceremony were a formality, a nod to old alliances nobody actively remembered the terms of.

He didn't know I was the delegation.

Damon told me William spent that evening rehearsing his acceptance speech in front of Isabelle, who wore the scarf a third time like it had already become hers by right of repetition. He touched the back of his neck twice while he rehearsed, Damon said—an old tell, apparently, one his own people had flagged without knowing what it meant.

I knew exactly what it meant. Two years of watching that hand rise to that spot every time he lied to me, and he still didn't know he did it.

"He's not afraid," Damon said, watching my face for something.

"He should be," I said, and went back to pinning the collar.
